I went to the post office and on the way back home I was getting ready to turn into the subdivision entrance and I saw an accident at the intersection that is about 1/2 block from the turn into the subdivision. Two cars were in the roadway. The one in the left lane closer to me than the one in the right, both between the intersection and the entrance I use. I got in the turn lane and saw a motor scooter. Then I saw a person down on the road just before the green car. The driver and two other people were milling on the sidewalk. There was some debris in front of him - i think the scooter seat - and he was basically just laying there. I immediately parked to block traffic and went to his assistance. NO ONE ELSE TRIED!!! The guy was in incredible pain. He had a compound fracture between elbow and shoulder of the right arm and another compound fracture of the left leg just below his knee.
I yelled for someone to call 911 and someone said they already had. But noone except me tried to help this guy.
I kept him level and flat and elevated his head and kept him from trying to stand up and calmed him - talked and told him to breath deeply. I was worried about neck injuries as he said his neck hurt.
It took 10 minutes for the cops to come and the first one on the scene was an off duty homicide detective (it said so on his windbreaker) who just happened to be driving by (on his way back from - you guess it - the post office). He told me to keep doing what I was doing and marked off the scene.
A couple of other cops showed up but did not hing for the victim - just me there. About 15 minutes after I stopped the fire/rescue truck came - from about a mile away. I backed away when they got there. It took another 10 or so for the ambulance.
He was in pretty rough shape but the fire engine lead guy said his injuries weren't life threatening and they didn't think he any head or neck or internal injuries, just the broken bones and road rash.
I don't get it. All these people standing around and I'm the only one that even tried to give this guy any assistance. This and this alone is going to bother me for quite a while.
Edit: OK, I get it that the driver was shook up and even if he wasn't shouldn't have been the one to assist. But there was a witness.
The driver told me that the scooter guy made a left turn right in front of him. Another driver was there said she was turning left and that the scooter also made the left crossing the first lane before being hit in the right lane. Scooter guy probably didn't see the car coming because his view was blocked by the van.
So the driver and some school kids walking home and the witness in the van just left this poor guy in the road.
I don't get it.

Sad. There was a song years ago along this line, you never know what you will do till it hits you in the face one day and you hope you do the right thing.
That said, I hate the scooters around here blocking traffic in 45-55 mph zones when they can barely do 30ish.
I don’t get why the changed the laws here and gave them the right to put plates there scooters, because now they think they own the road.

I think here, same as Colorado, any motorized vehicle 49cc or less doesn't need plates. Others are considered motorcycles and need plates. It's just a tax grab.
As I was getting out of the truck I was going over CPR. We took the course in the early 80s but didn't need it. He did go unconscious for a couple of brief periods but came to when I roused him.
Poor guy. I think he was probably homeless judging from the nature of the debris around. He was wearing a backpack that looked like from the stuff on the ground had split open. I wondered last night if he had anyone to help him after he gets out of the hospital, any family or anything. With a broken right arm and left leg he's going to be immobile for a while. And no, while I do feel sorry for him, I'm not adopting him.

Sad Tony….especially that no one helped….but there are scammers out there that will fake injuries and then mug you. Things that were common decades ago like hitchhiking are now seen as quite risky.

Yeah the fire lead guy asked if I was ok and gave me sanitizing stuff that I never thought of since I was in contact. The adrenaline rush was coming down then and it all set in. Up yo that point I was on autopilot
