I have to use the narrow version vice standard. Not enough space. What jacks did you go with, the rolling Jack or other. I like the idea of one Jack lifting vice two piston jacks.

The rolling power jack is cool but is bulky and can get in the way, to do it over again I would probably spend the 14 hun elsewhere and just get the jack plate...

Ceiling height is 9' 4"...
With the top of the windshield 3" from the ceiling, there is 5' 3" from the bottom of the oil pan to the floor, 5' 4" from the bottom of the rear end to the floor, and 4' 4" from the bottom of the lift rails to the floor...

was getting from them direct. i'm limited in garage height (garage door clearance issue) , so this was the best option, plus its 120v vice 220v. Its a little wider then the bendpac, but still useable in the garage.

I've been watching them for a while. Both Eagle direct or Tools USA (a distributor) have sales all the time where you get something free (shipping, aux equipment, upgrade etc). I'm on the email list for both of them and get notification when they have them.

too close, I had to raise the rails... The smaller door is 85" and the bottom of the rail was 88"... The lift post is 89" so the rails are at an incline!!
The big door is 97" and the rail is at 100" from the floor...
It is handy having a drive thru garage...

Yes, just the left runway moves, I have it on the wide setting so I have some extra room coming up the ramps... On the narrow setting you have to line these big beasts up pretty good when driving up on it, the outside of the wheels are real close to the edge...

On one hand it's nice having it at the higher, wider, dry, 65F constant temp shop all winter, but on the other hand it would be more convenient to have it at home...
Today I ordered a sliding jack tray for it, sometimes the scissor jack gets in the way... This will give more options for jack stand placement on the rear diff when removing it too...

It would kinda suck having the car elsewhere. Besides being able to tinker anytime you feel like it, seems you would also need a whole separate set of tools.
onecrazydog
01-17-2014, 09:50 PM
Most tools, car care products, tinker time (lol), are all cons for sure!! Space is a big pro though... I do have a better socket set at the shop than at home!!
The jack tray I ordered is rated at 6000 pounds, but has about 6.5" wide surface space... Not really ideal for jack stands...
So my plan is to make removable brackets with jack stands welded on them... My buddy will weld them up for free, just have to get the steel...
Here's the rough draft I came up with... Patent pending...

The only problem you will have is finding a place under the car to place jack stands with the rear end out. Not much in the back to put them on. Is the jack plate flush with the tire ramp? If so no need to make what you drew. You could weld plates to the bottom of the jack stand and drill some holes in it to bolt to the jack plate. that way when you remove them they set flat on the floor and take up much less room. You wouldn't have to drill more than 2 holes in them because they only keep them in place not carry a load. There would only be a couple of positions on the rack to bolt them up I am sure that you can put the car in position to accomplish that.

The flat plate is a good idea too, I could still use the jack stands on the ground then... The jack stands will only be for the rear end to sit on so they don't really need to be adjustable, just fixed in place so they don't tip... two bolts in each one would work fine, and wouldn't compromise the jack tray at all... Easier to build too!!
Plan is to lift the car up with the scissor lift, slide tray and stands under rear end, lower rear end onto stands and undo from car, lift car back up, strap rear end to jack tray and slide out... Lower car down, and it can sit on the scissor jack until the rear goes back in... No need for jack stands to hold the car up... Way safer on the jack...

I could get these in Canada for 60 bucks, but they are slower and rated for 2 tons... Which would be fine... Holes could be drilled thru the base... Never heard of the brand name before...

The car has to be fairly centred on the lift to use the scissor jack, so that shouldn't be to big of an issue... The tray has a few inches of side to side adjustment too!!

House wiring is done. Lift will ship March 6th, but takes 1.5-2 weeks to get here. I'm not installing a thermal switch...I've been on lots of forums researching and it's not necessary...it's a CYA from the manufacturer.

Delivered to a freight depot (60 miles is the nearest one they work with...ABF freight), but they have an extra service you can pay for to have them bring it to the house in a semi, get it off with a fork lift, and put it in your garage. This costs $325. It sounds like a lot, but if I had to do it any other way, here's what it would look like...
Borrow a friend's truck with a hitch (my truck has no hitch)
Rent a flat trailer for one day - $165
Drive 70 minutes to the freight dock, get loaded, drive back home...total time about 3 hours
Pay for gas for my friend's truck - 120 miles, so let's say 6 gallons, so about $20
Once home, I would have to rent some device to get the lift off the trailer, such as an engine hoist...costs $65/day.
Spend one hour getting the lift into the garage and off the trailer
Spend 2 hours driving around to all these rental places getting equipment and signing papers, etc.
Total spent - $250 and about 5-6 hours of my time. Instead I pay $325 and it's all done for me.

What kind did you buy?
Bendpak HD-9
Trouble was width...if I end up buying car "A", it has an outside tire to outside tire measure of 80". Most "standard" lifts won't handle that width easily (most of them have about 82" drive through, so I'd have only 1" on each side of the car...yikes!) I can't fit one of the "wide" lifts in the part of my garage where I want the lift (my garage is 3 cars wide and double deep in one bay...I want the lift in that double depth back bay). Bendpak HD-9 has about 86" drive through...so I'll have 3" on each side. And their runways are adjustable so my tires won't hang off the edge of the runways like most lifts.
Alloy Dave
03-12-2024, 12:51 AM
What I WANTED to do when we built the house was have a "pit" made so I could just walk under the car. however, there were many building code issues as far as having a drain in a pit, safety issues with people falling in, and so on...and in the end the cost for permits and inspections didn't seem worth it. ALso to jack the car up with a pit you need rails and a rolling air lift installed...cost for that would have been high.
Something like this would have been ideal but with sliding rails/jack like the second pic

Rob I really liked the Wildfire. It was first on my list...very high quality. However, they didn't have a size that suited me if I end up getting a Vette. The Vette is too wide for most "normal" lifts, and although they make a wider version, it would be too wide for my garage.

I got the garage all cleared out and the walls painted...I went ahead and did a ton of minor drywall repairs and fixed the patched area where I did the outlet. Everything looks great now. This week I will chalk line the floor in preparation for Saturday, when 5 guys will be here to help with the install. Probably won't get it fully operational on that day...too many things that I may need to run and buy parts for such as electrical fittings, greases for lubrication, hydraulic fluid, etc....but if I can get all the heavy work done on that day I'll be very happy.
P.S. Has anyone here used "female" concrete connectors such as the below? I was planning to not bolt the lift down because I'll need to move it around in the garage based on the job I'm doing, but if I could find a way to easily bolt and unbolt it...I would consider this. I want to understand a few things before I go this route.
