Ford is proving once again that more power and outstanding fuel economy are not mutually exclusive offerings; the new Ford Edge delivers both. The 2011 Edge SEL and Limited, the two most popular choices in the midsize crossover series, deliver an unsurpassed 19 mpg city and 27 highway with a 3.5-liter V6 producing 285 horsepower. This is best among standard V6 competitors. Edge Sport, riding on class-exclusive 22-inch wheels, pumps out 305 horsepower from its 3.7-liter V6 – 40 more than the outgoing model – while maintaining its EPA-estimated 18 mpg city and 25 highway.

Edge Sport - 305 horsepower - 18 mpg city and 25 highway from its 3.7-liter V6

I'm being a bit sarcastic here, but it seems that more power DOES decrease fuel economy. :tease2:

But only a litttle bit..

I think they were saying: the 2010 SEL/Ltd was 18/25 at 265HP and the 2011 Sport (40 more HP) is the same 18/25.

However, the 2011 SEL/Ltd is 19/27 -- an improvement.

I know the Sport gets loaded-up with packaged options so possibly the weight increase and possible additional under-car air flow from (taller wheels?) might be containing the mileage increase. Engine-wise, it seems unlikely the EPA sequence would tap that additional power (and TiVCT has the flexibility to manage that however Ford chooses), so I'm thinking the 40 additional peak ponies has much less, or even nothing to do with that diff (SEL/Ltd vs Sport) vs options/weight and ride-height/air-flow. I've seem similar disparities listed for Fusion V6 vs Fusion Sport V6 with identical engines. Dunno, but that would be my suspicion.

The official Ford contact in Dearborn on that specific Media Release is Anne Marie Gattari (agattari@ford.com 313-323-7809) who may have more insight if interested.
