I could care less about plug-ins, but I noted a couple mentions of hydrogen fuel cells. :wow2:

How much coal and other fossil fuels have to be burned to make enough electricity to charge one of these.:yellowcard3:

At least they are using better battery technology that is somewhat friendly to the environment as compared to NiMH batteries.
The battery technology that we have today is still evil to the environment, but it is getting better.
Here's an article that breaks down the per mile costs of various vehicles over their lifetime (dust to dust) & hybrids in general do not do that well compared to other vehicles.

+1 admittedly I don't know all the technicals, but I just see battery cars as using a DIFFERENT kind of non-renewable energy and there are different environmental factors. Depending on how the hydrogen is created, one could say the same thing (electrolysis).
I'm not sure if we'll ever make hydrogen work, but the concept is so clean and pure that it's very appealing. The chemistry is elegant, water and oxygen outputs.

Electric rates here in Ca. are out of this world. If I had to plug in my car every night I can just imagine. I have trouble remembering to plug in my cell phone so this will be a challenge to me as well.

Jan was watching a real estate show on H&G (I think) where couple was buying a weekend/summer home in the Caribbean (I forget where ...in/near Cancun) and the utilities were estimated at $2000-3000/month!!, but, since it cost 1.2 million, they didn't seem to even flinch! Must be nice! Is that insane or what? Even here in NY we pay only about $110 every *two* months for our electric (just the two of us).

If they ever get this "electricity without wires" thing working, you won't have to plug anything in.:wow2:

When will the US get with the program and allow more nuclear plants to be built? Am I the only one who sees that as an answer to more than a few problems people are crying about?

I've heard Environmentalists asking the same thing, saying that it's safer for the environment than oil or coal.
I think the problem is that it would put too many people to work & get them off of the government social payroll.

I think France also have a large number that work just fine. They even have methods for recycling the spent fuel.

I say build them on Mars and have the electricity wired here....best of both worlds...safe and cheap. :tease2:
Seriously, I agree with you. Not criticizing, but would you want one within 10 miles of you? I don't think I would....but then I think we can put them "out of the way" a bit.

With the 'smart-grid' we can put them in the desert and then build solar complexes around it (just for laughs) ...smart-grid is worthwhile but it would be nice if more of it was built where there's actually people. If they politically must play pretend with large-scale solar in the desert, then why not build nukes nearby too?

Would I lobby for one within 10 miles? No.
Would I protest one within 10 miles? No.
They need to be built. They need to be placed strategically. Put them where they need to be...

I don't care if they build them in my back yard since 3 mile island there have not been any accident that I am aware of.
I think nuclear technology has advanced to the point where they are safe. Only problem with it in my back yard is the magnetic field that is produced from the electricity they generate and send down the wires. Other than that build them where ever.

My Hydro bill here for a 5 Bedroom 3800sq ft home is about $300/month and that gets a :redcard: That said, that amount does include our water as the Hydro Companies monitor and bill the water usage too, our basement is also fully finished so our total living area is about 5400 sq.ft. and we have 3 Sons, but still $300 for Hydro and Fresh Water in the country that has the most of both, seems high.
We have more Hydro Electricity here with Niagara and the other Dams than we could ever use but the sale of huge amounts of our Hydro to the :flag2: negatively influences our supply and demand and therefore the cost.
:canada:Hydro Companies are majority owned by the Provincial and Municipal Governments are extraordinary profitable. http://www.hydroone.com/InvestorRelations/Pages/QuarterlyReports.aspx

One more reason to build more nukes.
Just imagine all the money we could save by eliminating the need to convert all that metric electricity to imperial...

I'd say 85% of people around here don't even know it's there.

electric bill is based on a wide variety of factors. Temperature, humidity, do you have electric stove, furnace, how many TVs, do you have a woodshop, how many family members, etc. It's difficult to compare costs unless you "normalize" them....such as kw/person/month or some similar metric.

I've got no complaints about the cost of electric since I set up the budget billing plan. They just average your estimated yearly usage costs and you pay a set amount monthly. They re-evaluate it quarterly and adjust if necessary. I like that they have the option to take advantage of. Otherwise, the summer spike for cooling would be killer! The past month would have meant $225 for me. I'm sure this month, with the nasty heat wave, will be much more. My natural gas service offers the same, and I take advantage of that as well to avoid the winter spikes. Sure does make budgeting much easier.
