View Full Version : "Very cool Mustang" coming in 2014

The crew at Mustangs Daily has let the internets in on the first morsels of information about the 2014 Ford Mustang (http://www.autoblog.com/model/mustang). As you may know, America's pony car will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in just three years, so there's been more than a little interest in what FoMoCo will come up with to celebrate the occasion. It turns out, the '14 car won't be an evolution of the current machine we all know and love. Instead, it will be something completely different. Ford (http://www.autoblog.com/make/ford) is keeping exactly what that means to itself for the moment, other than to say that the next design will be a huge leap forward for the nameplate.

Here's hoping that doesn't mean the re-introduction of the Mustang II.

Fortunately, Ford seems pretty pleased with the way that the design is going so far, saying that we'll see a "pretty cool" Mustang crop up in 2013 as a 2014 model. Given how far the car has advanced over the past three years, we can't wait to see what Ford is up to with its muscle car. Listen to what else J Mays, Ford's vice president of global design, has to say about future styling of the Blue Oval's entire portfolio in the video after the jump (http://www.autoblog.com/2010/10/04/j-mays-very-cool-mustang-coming-in-2014-w-video/#continued).

J.Mays sure said a lot without saying much -lol.
(:doh2: means duh! below ...as in duh! ...of course! -lol)

Not a kinetic design like Fiesta/Focus :doh2:

More of a departure than '05=>'10 :doh2:

But keeping the Mustang 'DNA' :doh2:

A daunting challenge :doh2:

Now, tell us somthing we don't know, J. ...like will it:

-have IRS? (lol)
-offer a killer 5.0 using the BOSS 5.0 pieces with a TT?
-be a tad larger (longer) but lighter?
-have an even lower drag coefficient?
-get better mileage?
-still be a credible modern muscle car? (but not a modder's-dream hot-rod, I fear :nonono:)

At least those are my hunches -- but what do I know? :nonono: not much -lol ;-)

Hoprfully it will be all of the above.......except I would like to see it go smaller not bigger....more like the original 65 fastback size.

Now that the Camaro and Chally are out that would make lots of sense ...i.e. don't try to compete with them on space (tho mustang has more room than the larger Camaro!), be different -- the 'small' and 'agile' pony car! A King Cobra among larger, but inferior, vipers -lol  ...an agile mustang among klutzy klidesdales :rofl3:

That's a tall order! IRS will add a little (but will help W/D). Mustang loosing 500# would add l-o-t-s of expense, imo. L-o-t-s of alluminum and CF -- unlikely, in Mustang's target market, I think. But that sure would be nice! I can see 150-200 tho. I'd really like to see the tranny moved back to couple to the IRS. as the vette does -- complete with CF torque tube and lots of light pieces and maybe -200# and 52/48 WD is doable in volume w/o too much price damage? If Ford can do something like that and still keep entry-level affordable (one chassis to drive volume on the lightweight pieces) it will be a very exciting car. Can you imagine a 52/48 sub-3500# top-dog 600HP 5.0TT 'stang and a 51/49 3200# 400HP 3.5TT V6? Oh, yeah!

This could be cool, getting close to Vette territory in the weight factor!!

I think to do that at high HP levels (+/-600 factory) with balance would add $15K+ to the price even for a volume build, but ...who knows? It's a materials and engineering game these days and Ford is on there game. The existing mustang design tho 5 years old bests the Camaro and Chally in tortional strength and effective use of space, so who knows?

I already started saving up for the 50th

Well the real plan is to save $500+ a month for 36 months = $18,000
Then sell my stock options which will profit me and after capital gain tax should net $$22,000+ minimum

So by 2013 I should have $40,000 for a downpayment and retain my Cobra and Shelby still. :woot:

California is such a kill joy! -lol Yeah=, that could be a prob.

 I wonder if it could be spec'd and bought thru your delaer in CA but shipped somewhere else, then you pick-up with your CA plate(s)/reg in hand? Dunno.

Ok, you'll just have to trailer it both ways, CD! :rofl3:

I'm no expert on this, but when I bought my '07, the salesperson told me that the car itself was no different from CA to non-CA cars....the different "option" you had to select was paperwork related only. Can anyone confirm/deny this?

Who knows where I will be on getting a new stang in 2013-14 but I am skeptical.

While a new Mustang might be cool (subjective for sure), you have got to think new government regulations are going to make a serious impact on the final result. We might not be so happy with some of those changes and probably not very happy with the increased costs. I certainly don't have a crystal ball, so I am guessing. Maybe a Ecoboost version will be the new high performance engine, maybe it will be a hybrid, maybe no more V-8's.

I know I will be very curious about how this develops. In the meantime, I am hanging onto my 08. I just wish it had SYNC.

There has been speculation that there might not be one. Something to do with Carroll Shelby and contracts.

I've head there will be a '12 GT500, but have heard nothing beyond that -- as I recall the renewed Shelby contract ended then but surely could be extended if both parties were of like mind on that ...doubt the niche 5.4 will live beyond the '12 tho, so will be interesting to see what they have up their long blue sleeves -lol. There have been rumors that even the '12 GT500 will not be a 5.4, but rather an 5.0 FI "Roadrunner" (500+HP) but PI, not DI, so not considered to be an actual "ecoboost." Might make sense if Ford wants to still keep it mod-friendly. Same rumor has one or two top-dog F150s (Harley & Platinum?) getting the same engine in '12. Who knows...

That's why I said GT500/Cobra, not GT500. Heck, maybe it'll just be a Mustang SVT, like the old Mustang SVO. I'd be fine with that.

In the original contract it came out that Shelby only got about $500/vehicle, as I recall, but I wasn't aware of the replacement part cost differential per above. I wonder if that's simply to discourage cloning ...or if there's additional imbedded licensing costs in the logo parts. Dunno, but if it's carried as a Ford part (which I suspect it is) it would follow Ford's pricing structure. Either way it's unfortunate an actual GT500 owner and/or the insuraance have to bear such seemingly-artificial costs

However, my hunch is that we're seeing someting call net-add logistics costs. Net-add logistics is when a company manages parts (in this example) for a special purpose, e.g. all associate with a licensed-logo vehicle, as a separate net-add to all 'systems' that support them i the business structure of the corporation. So, for example, if carrying an extra 20 part numbers (whatever number) in the total Ford logistics system (from manufacturing to retail parts supply, computer tracking/databases, etc, and everything in between) costs "X" if it wer *not* net-add that cost would be spread across all parts (for that vehicle or eve much broader that than that -- possibly across many thousands of parts), but for net-add it could be carried only against those parts themselves -- 20 in this artificial example -- a huge difference.

Net-add techniques are very handy when contracts are involved that can terminate in a few years (or at anytime!) and might/might-not be renewed etc since, if not renewed, there's *zero* financial 'unwinding' that has to take place since *all* expenses of *all* parts and related logistics are borne *only* by those parts themselves and, therefore, the contract can be terminated at any time with 100% financial transparency and zero financial impact to other operations -- smart business management!

Dunno, but I'd suspect that's what we're seeing here because it makes good contract business sense to all costs isolated to only the specialty parts themselves, and it also provides a defacto anti-cloning price hurdle to only those parts -- from purely a business perspective, that's simply brilliant, imho.

Too complicated to figure out in our spare time IMO. There are all sorts of tangential benefits to Shelby, over and above the $500/car. Such as the "referral" to his shop(s) for conversions, upgrades, and add-on sales of things like the Scott Drake engine dress up kits.
