View Full Version : Bought me a 2011 Taurus SHO

Well we finally broke down and unloaded the 02 BMW 745Li and picked up a brand new 2011 Taurus SHO. Tuxedo Black with Rapid Spec 402A. 402 A is the full tilt, loaded up version. With the Shelby purchase in 07 and an 08 Ed Bauer Expedition in the past, Ford gave us a nice chunk of owner loyalty cash as well as a great price for the 7 series. That 7 was a pain in the *** car. Glad its gone.
Man, this Tuxedo Black Metallic paint is awesome ! :yikes: This SHO is a pocket rocket

I'll post some pics tomorrow.

LOL, that 02, BMW was probably costing you some :moneyman: to keep on the road, IS.

The SHOs are sweet, congrats!

Thanks ! I did a lot of work myself on the 7 though. Brakes, water pump, yadayada. Parts we always a bit more expensive, took 9 quarts of oil per change. Bought the scan tool for the 7...which helped alot...but perpetually chased alot of computer gremlins an alot of unrealibility.
Don't think I'll ever own one again...very overrated. In fact, the SHO reminds Cindy alot of the 7 series. The SHO appointments mirrors that of the 7 in many of the features...minus the twin turbos.

...that would be cool but 800HP through that AWD drivetrain might be a serious problem.

How about a RWD conversion -lol. Here's a gen-3 SHO (post #555) in process (http://www.shoforum.com/showthread.php?t=102465)

Hmmmm  ...S197 is only 5-in shorter wheelbase than 2011 Taurus :weg: :rofl3: Some longer control arms spring-pocket relo and ...we will have trashed a perfectly good '11 SHO

CH53Driver
10-09-2010, 06:10 PM
I know there are some Nissan GTRs pushing 800+bhp and they are an AWD configured vehicle but then again that car was built as a "performance" car from the start and even then I'm sure those owners are either a) investing in drivetrain upgrades or b) gambling with their cars. Either way, I'm sure some enterprising person could get one of these new SHO's up into the 800bhp range. The only obstacle of course is $$$ and possibly every day drivability dependability.

68fastback
10-09-2010, 06:16 PM
True, Matt ... ultimately $$ can solve a lot of problems.

The new Explorer uses essentially the same AWD but with a cooled power transfer unit -- so maybe there are already some upgrade pieces in the blue parts bin.

Ultimately the biggest problem might be having to run C23 to handle the huge boost/clyinder-pressures necessary for 800HP from a tiny 3.5L V6 and still have a fully civilized street car -- definate KOTS candidate if someone pulls this off tho

Been at Mizzou all weekend. Will get pics. Drove mostly highway to Columba, MO and reached about 22mpg. On Alloy Dave's interior comment, the entire drivers area seems to be very wrap around. With the seat adjustment set for the driver, it not bad at all. I like it this way. Everything is in close
proximity to the driver. The AWD is a must, though Ford tells me they have had requests for a sigle drive axle. This car makes too much power for anything but AWD. At least as for as the Taurus' structure goes. This car really gets up and goes. I'm sure it will evolve over time, but
Ford Tells me the V8 is going to be fewer and far between. I heard the 5.0 GT motor is going to wind up in a few of the trucks, but most of the
car and truck line is going to these Ecoboost type motors. Keep on the lookout for that in the next few years.
The SHO is a great 4 door vehicle ! We'll get you those pics inside and out.

We drove about 2000 miles using cruise control and could only see 20.5 mpg?

Perhaps because we had our luggage and averaged 70 mph?

Nope.

If we do anything it may eventually be an exhaust upgrade to get rid of the 4 mufflers. :nonono:

People can't believe it's a Taurus when they ask.

Well we finally broke down and unloaded the 02 BMW 745Li and picked up a brand new 2011 Taurus SHO. Tuxedo Black with Rapid Spec 402A. [snip] Man, this Tuxedo Black Metallic paint is awesome!

Congratulations! And as a heavily-vested F shareholder, thank you.

I made a similar move Thursday and picked-up my own Red Candy Metallic 2011 Taurus SHO 402A, with Performance Package. Good God that shorter final drive ratio makes it quick. 2-plus tons shouldn't move so quickly.

I traded-in a 2009 Flex Limited AWD, the best car I've ever owned. I'd have gladly bought another, but with Ford's product cadence having been thrown-off so much by everything it pulled forward to spur demand throughout the downturn, Ford just hasn't reinvested a nickel to give Flex any of the features most other Ford vehicles now offer, like Keyless Start, Adaptive Cruise, BLIS, Auto High Beam and Wiper etc - despite giving them all to MKT.

My wife drives an MKS, a lovely car - but a big ask in its own right given all that remains unavailable and how great a value Taurus happens to be. It's about a $10K price delta for nicer leather, rocking audio system and a little more NVH dampening and deadening. Pathetic though it may be, it actually became annoying to have to pull-out my keys and constantly readjust high beams when driving the Flex.

One remarkable aspect of the Ford story (though partially owed to the general shortage of quality used inventory by scrappage rates outstripping new purchase rates for so long), was the Flex's resale value. I owned it for 20 months, drove it 23K miles, and it ultimately cost less to own than a bargain basement lease. What greater manifestation of Ford's holistic renaissance can there be? I had my heart set on a 2011 Explorer - and it's truly a superb, no compromise vehicle (in terms of option availability) - but I have a Transit Connect to do any bona fide cargo hauling and with economy mandates getting stricter as they march toward 2016, high horsepower, large displacement cars are either going to vanish or become punitively price prohibitive as makers are forced to influence their product mixes. Ford's already offering MKZ Hybrid at the same price point as its conventional 3.5 L V6.

The Taurus is simply a well-executed vehicle - which, in terms of reliability, performance, content and value. And it will hold it's value exceptionally well - particularly Taurus SHO. 0% APR, the 100% first-year depreciation write down, and high Flex resale made it too good to pass-up. And I love it. The ONLY niggle I have about the whole car is that Adaptive Cruise is inexplicably unavailable in combination with the SHO Performance Package. WHY NOT? It's the same loony logic that sees heated seats and conventional fog lamps i a $55K GT500. The operating results show that people are spending to buy fully-equipped (and most highly profitable) features in unprecedented numbers. Why deny them (me)?

I never liked the Tuxedo Black Metallic. The MKS is Dark Ink Blue (a dropped color which is TRULY stunning), and whether on Flex or any of the other vehicles, I there was simply too much gold and silver flakiness luminescing from beneath the black. I DO think Mustang's non-metallic Black would have been ideal as a special paint offering for SHO - and it would have been wicked. I ultimately chose Candy Red, because not ONLY were all of the remaining fully-optioned 402A SHO's either Black or a handful of Ingot Silver or Platinum White, but the Red I found to be so unappealing on Flex or Mustang suddenly became gorgeous on the Taurus SHO. Our driveway is now appropriately Red (2011 Taurus SHO), White (2011 GT500), and Blue (2009 MKS AWD).

Living in Northern climes and buying the car from a dealer in the Poconos, I had to have the Summer-only Performance Package tires swapped-out before taking delivery. I installed Continental ExtremeContact DWS W-rated all-seasons on it, which was great for me because I wanted a testbed before re-shoeing my 2011 GT500 to get out of those damned SVTPP track tires. The ExtremeContact's have been everything I'd hoped. Phenomenal grip, ride, and quiet. The holy grail so far.

For as much as I've been loving my 2011 GT500's "grunt and snort" supercharged 5.4L and powershifting my way to 140, the Taurus SHO is an entirely different - and no less rewarding kind of fun. It's like riding a nuclear reactor - silent but churning 30 megawatts. It's just "willing" - with power on tap. It's torque curve is SO high and SO flat that I find it to be more satisfying than the GT500 in may ways (which actually trails the 5.0 L's higher-revving nature). I may now have the perfect combination of weekday and weekend driving fulfillment.

All I need are plates that read "MONFRI" for the SHO and "SATSUN" for the GT500 to complete the picture.

Merry Christmas to all.

"I traded-in a 2009 Flex Limited AWD, the best car I've ever owned." :shades:

I almost stopped reading after the aforementioned...and I'm glad I did, great review of the SHO. The one thing about this car that did surprise me was that FORD did not rename it.

Growing up in the 80's, I always though of the Taurus as a Mom's or NERD car and this new SHO is anything butt http://www.umnet.com/pic/diy/screensaver/3%5Cgreat-ass--36957.jpg but STILL called a TAURUS.
