View Full Version : Winding Road: F150 3.5 EcoBoost is a winner...

It embarasses the 5.3 Chevy V8 and is comparable to the Dodge 'Hemi' when towing. They were impressed with performance, NVH and that it felt like the 6500# trailer wasn't even there whereas the Dodge and especially the Chevy were constantly reacting to the load. They said the Ford F150 3.5 EB at WOT sounded akin to a sweet BMW-like howl that will whip your head around, but they liked the deep rumble of the 5.7 Dodge.
On a different note, the F150 5.0 TiVCT was both quickest and fastest of the group. The Cheby 5.3 V8 was the clear slug of the group being about 1.2 sec and 12-13 mph slower then the Ford 3.5 EB and 1.4 sec and about 14 mph slower than the Ford 5.0 in the 1/8th mile.
Some time ago when Ford first stated the engine list for the F150 I questioned in a post what exactly the purpose was of offering the 6.2 SOHC 2V in the F150 (aside from Raptor) because I fully expected the 5.0 TiVCT 4V would be just as strong and this test certainly supports that: the 5.0 was the fastest and quickest truck in this 5-truck 3-brand evaluation.
What also struck me is how close all three Ford engines (5.0 TiVCT-4V, 6.2 2V and 3.5 TiVCT EcoBoost) are: all falling within about 0.2 sec and 1 mph in the 1/8th mile.
The Chevy was the only clear laggard in the group (note the typo in the article: the Chevy is a 5.3 V8 as stated multiple times in the text, not a 4.3 V8 as shown in the compilation) and they said it really felt sluggish too and had to be really pushed hard with the trailer-load attached whereas the EcoBoost "leapt forward" even with 6500# attached.
Anyhow here's the article (http://www.windingroad.com/articles/reviews/driven-2011-ford-f-150-ecoboost/?src=Nextscreen). They're reserving final judgement until they can test the 3.5 EB and the others on real roads (all testing was done at Ford's Romeo, Michigan proving grounds) but it's pretty clear this pup is a winner.
Some of the comments below the article mention that EB is about a $1750 premium over the vanilla 3.7 V6 (which wasn't tested) and about $750 over the 5.0 V8. In the economy test with carefull driving the Winding Road testers managed 27 mpg (!) with the 3.5 V6 EcoBoost F150 -- pretty impressive for a near-5000# full size p'up. This engine, unlike the 5.0, is also capable of the same 11,300# tow rating of the 6.2 F150.

New ad campaign starts tomorrow, Nov 6, 2010 (or Oct 31st if you prefer that date -lol):
2011 FORD F-150 LAUNCH BUILDS ON SUCCESS OF RECOGNIZABLE, NO-NONSENSE ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN
http://media.ford.com/images/10031/11f150ads.jpg
Starting Oct. 31, new print and television ads will launch for the new F-150 featuring Dennis Leary.. (http://media.ford.com/login.cfm?path_info=/article_display.cfm?article_id=33520)
The new ad campaign for the 2011 Ford F-150 launches Nov. 6 and builds on the success of the “rant” style campaign first introduced on F-150 in 2008
Ads focus on F-Series powertrain leadership with four new engines in the F-150 that offer class-leading power, performance and fuel economy
F-Series is the industry’s first vehicle to top sales of 400,000 units for the year with nearly 435,000 trucks sold
More... (http://media.ford.com/article_display.cfm?article_id=33520)
"In a separate, but related, EcoBoost truck marketing campaign, Ford is presenting a series of online documentaries called “Torture Test” to prove out the new truck engine.
The series begins with a randomly selected engine from the Cleveland Engine Plant going through a variety of extreme laboratory and on-road tests. Among the tests the EcoBoost-powered truck performs: hauling tons of timber in the Northwest, towing an 11,000 lb. trailer at top speeds at the Homestead-Miami Speedway and competing head-to-head with competitive trucks towing 9,000 lbs. on steep grades at Davis Dam, Nevada.
The” Torture Test” series ends with the engine being pulled from the F-150 and installed in an off-road racing truck to compete in the Baja 1000 on Nov. 18. The episodes can be viewed as they are completed at www.fordvehicles.com/trucks (http://www.fordvehicles.com/trucks).
Ford also continues another unique marketing approach it introduced with the launch of the 2010 Transit Connect: taking the vehicle directly to the customer. A fleet of F-150 EcoBoost trucks will begin a tour of 50 cities in mid-November and run through February. Consumers can sign-up for a drive when the tour comes to their city by registering at www.drivef150ecoboost.com (http://www.drivef150ecoboost.com)."
