Just got my Nitto NT05's in. Well 2 of them at least. I'm going 275/35-20 on all four. I love the tread design. I can't wait to try them out. It will be a few weeks before I get them mounted up most likely. I'll post some feedback on them as soon as I can.

I'll let you know as soon as I can. I just got the last 2 ordered. It's been a nightmare trying to get them. From what the guy said, I have the last 2 tires in 275/35-20 Nt05's coming to me in the country!

For sure. Gotta check here (http://radar.weather.gov/Conus/full_loop.php) before you go out with those (unless you're in :canada: then you check here (http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/radar/index_e.html) -lol)

Actually from the feedback that I have read, they are better in the rain then many other popular tires. I'm sure I'll be able to drive them on wet roads sometime unfortunately.

Can't remember if I posted on this topic here or not...

I ran the NT05R on the rear of the snake all season.
All I can say is :wow2:

These things hook like a M/T, but have really good street manners and are not that bad in the rain.
I'd expect the non-R version to be even better in the rain.
Even ran them on the auto-cross and they had very little side deflection and roll-under.
Nitto has a winner with this one!

Am planning to put a pair of NT05 non-R on the front next year if funds allow (if not I'll keep running the bald Nitto Extreme II R on there currently).

The sticky compound itself is probably quite good in the rain but the unsiped large-block tread pattern is necessarily prone to hydroplaning. But it's that same non-siped large-block pattern, profile, sticky compound, and the fact that that tire width is perfect for the wheel-width that should also make them handle really well.

Good to know. The "R' is the drag radial version and I expect the non "R" version to handle even better in the turns.

Thanks for the feedback on them. I'll be able to add mine soon.

Very cool. I wish they offered 20's in a 295 or even a 285 would have been good. Just 275's and 315's.

The 20's look so good on the car but IMHO just doesn't give me enough sidewall to hook up. The one thing I noticed most about 285's on front is the huge reduction in understeer, now when I turm the wheel the car goes there ... NOW!

Good to hear from someone that's done it. That's what I'm hoping for with the 275's on the front plus stickier rubber then the Pirelli's should be fun.

Correct. 275/35-20 on all 4.

Normally DR's are a rear tire option not good at handling because of sidewall weakness. Maybe with the 20's being a short sidewall they will handle acceptable, hope so.

The Nitto NT05 that I am going to use is not a drag radial. The NT05R is the drag radial version. From what I have read, the NT05 is a great track day and autocross tire while still performing very well on the street.

I dont have the R's just the NT05 Drag radials, I see where they make an R for the road course but my friend has had the DR's on his car for about 6000 miles with no issues. My Autocross andentures have tappered off because the club doent come to palm beach any more. So far I'm very happy with them

Hum. Unless I'm mistaken the "R" is the drag radial. The non "R" version is the street/track version.

Yes, that DR version is the one with a "0" treadwear rating. I saw a car with those at a car show, the guy said he had over 5k miles on them, and they looked still very good with lots of tread. He said his traction was great with them...but I went with the 555r due to the higher treadwear rating.

Just got my NT05's installed. Hard to have a good impression of how they are going to be right now as it's only about 40 degrees out and dirt is all over the roads due to the massive amounts of rain over the last 2 weeks. I was only able to put about 15 miles on them today but I like them so far. The fronts look alittle flat on the sidewalls due to the 9" front rims and 10's in the back. I think the tire it's self looks pretty mean on the car. So far they feel good and no weird vibrations or anything that I can tell so far and they seem to be quieter then the Pirellis.

Okay here's some feedback on my experience with these tires and size combination.

I love them!!!!!

Road noise is very low. Much better then my Pirelli's. It's still been pretty cold out and they are very slick when they were brand new and cold. Once worn in about 25 miles and driven enough to get some heat in them, they stick much better.

Now for the really good stuff, on the track they are awesome!! It took me awhile to get the pressure right. Most tires like lower pressure at tracks. These seem to really work well at about 39-40 PSI hot! I felt that they lower I went, the slower my laps were as they seemed to slide more at lower pressures. I spent the better part of 2nd track day adjusting them and once I brought them back up to 39 PSI hot, I was very comfortable with them and the only one that could pass me was Gary P., the Shelby VP and chief test driver. And that was because I waved him around as he couldn't keep up on the straights. But the lower weight of his GT350 helped big time in the corners and I didn't want to hold him up. Not bragging, just stating what happened as I'm not the best track driver by far.

With the wider tires up front the car cornered and braked much better. The front end was planted and did not want to push like before. You really had to overdrive the corner to get the car to push the front end and even when that happened, it still felt better then the other tires. Braking was great on these. I could brake very hard every lap without the front end ever feeling like it was going away or getting loose. Nice and stable.

So between the Grigg's suspension and Nitto NT05's, I felt very good on the track once the tire pressures were dialed in. Car was very controllable, very predictable and smooth. I have no doubts that this was the fastest I have ever gone on the track with my car.

I would definately recommend these tires for anyone looking for a good street/track tire. For the price/performance ratio, I don't think you can go wrong.

Awesome!!

Just some thoughts ...if the front won't understeer now (which is wonderful!! ...thank you, Griggs! ;-)), next time try dropping the pressure in the rear 3-4# below the front ...that will help it track anythng the front can do and will further reduce the possibility of oversteer in turns. While that's likely not a problem already, it may permit adding another # or 2 to the front which would otherwise shift toward oversteer (unless already at optimum adhesion in front), but it now may not. Even if you already found the front pressure that best complements the front suspension's frequency (max front adhesion), lower rear pressure relative to front will tend to dial-in more oversteer 'buffer' since it's usually better for the rear to be over-competant at tracking the front given front-biased W/D, because you can always dial in rear-induced understeer 'correction' with power for a faster/earlier line, but you can't do it vice-versa ...and you've got plenty of power to work with. You may already have it nailed, but I'd very surprised if the fastest setup -- even with Griggs and sticky tires -- was equal pressure front/rear because the front-biased W/D is still there and yaw moment is therefore centered forward of wheelbase midpoint. Half the fun is finding the ideal set-up anyway ;-)

Joker
01-28-2011, 05:45 PM
Makes sense Dan. I'll try it next time I'm out at a track.

I was thinking of dropping the rear more in PSI then the front but I ran out of time to play with it. We were only getting about 4-6 sessions per day to play with it. I wasted about 3 sessions going too low on the last day and 2-3 sessions the first day just getting a feel for all the new stuff.

68fastback
01-28-2011, 06:27 PM
...another technique with a front-biased W/D is -- if the above adjustments are an improvement -- then the rear *may* benefit from a lighter roll-bar and lower-rate springs (again, more rear compliance) however I suspect Griggs has already pretty well nailed that and the corner-weight balance, so tire pressure is probably the name of the game. Nice when you're down to that 'cause then you're in the home-stretch to your ideal setup ...and becomming 'one' with the iron ;-) as your lap-times keep pushing your skills and vice-versa :frolic: Has to be a kick in the pants with that set-up!!
