I posted this on the Raptor Forum and thought I'd share it here. I've had the clunk since almost day one.

There is now a TSB out for it TSB 11-5-7 which involves the replacement of the driveshaft. http://www.raptorforumz.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=8480&d=1305066331

I'll let you know how this works out.

Talked to my home town Ford dealer about the TSB last friday and he told me he didn't have anyone trained to work on Raptors and besides they couldn't get it on their lifts.:wtf:
So I then made an appointment with a Ford dealer that is on my way to work. This appointment was just so they could check it out. We agreed on 2 p.m. yesterday. After I got there the service manager told me it would be at least a 2 hour wait. I told him no way would I wait 2 hours just so they could check it especially when I had an appointment.

This morning I e-mailed the Ford dealer that did the tranny TSB on my GT500 in 09. They are about 25 miles from my home. The service manager got back to me within an hour and told me he ordered the parts and would let me know as soon as they come in. He told me that normally they would have to check it first but with my discription of the problem and the TSB # etc. he went ahead and ordered it.

This is a good example of the way different dealerships are run. It pays to shop around.

It may also have something to do with the pizzas I bought for everyone when they did the TSB on the GT500.:D

You would figure with the economy the way it is right now that dealers would be more than willing to help out customers. I guess they haven't taken that class yet. Glad to see that you got at least one sucker dealer to help you.

Sounds like they have figured out what the problem is. I know the Raptor I test drove when I was looking at new vehicles had the "clunk" . I noticed it right away when I was taking it out of the dealer's parking lot. I told the salesman about it, even pointed it out to him but he said Oh that is nothing :banghead:

It felt like the slip yoke in the DS was bottoming out and hitting when you stepped suddenly on the accelerator from a stop.

Yes...the slip yoke is the problem. It hangs up and then snaps forward causing the clunk.

VaporDude

Someone over on the Raptor forum put some kind of grease in their slip yoke to see if it would help. I haven't checked back on it yet to see if works long term. I know Ford was using some different grease but it was not a long term solution. I wonder why the 2010's don't have that problem and yet a lot of the 2011's do even with the same cab type. Did they redesign the yoke or the output shaft when they upgraded the transmission from the 2010's?

King Cobra
05-18-2011, 02:44 PM
Everything I read is that lubing the yoke just provided temporary relief.:look: Initially Ford was lubicating the splines but discontinued when they found it was just a temporary fix.

There doesn't seem to be a distinct line as to when the "clunk" started. I have read that some of the 2010's have the issue also.

Don't know about the design changes other than the new yoke may have a slightly different design and a different alloy steel.

The usual cause of driveline clunk is because the splines are dry, I wonder why the grease doesn't do the trick. Perhaps the splines don't match well or the finish is just too rough.

I think your exactly right. I have not yet seen a good discription of the exact differences between the new and old splines.

Glad you got a great deal from them -- they're typically a bunch of dufi from having gone there several times.

I was just there this week. Last time I stopped in (late '09 maybe?) they still had a KR they were trying to sell ...for $86K :yikes: They do have an amazing inventory tho. I called to ask if they had a BOSS. They said yes. Went there. No BOSS. Talked to the Mustang dude and he says: we do have an allocation. Isn't Winner Ford a long hall for you Dan?

They were great to me, I bought the car over the phone with only a 2K deposit after seeing their eBay listing.
The sold me the car for list, 48K and change.
The had a minion pick me up at the train station in Philly and take me to the dealer as I took the train there after finishing up for in NYC.
I had my Corsa Cat Backs and FRPP lowering shipped to them before I picked the car up and they installed both during the PDI and did not charge me.
After I returned to :canada: the service manager packed up my stock parts an shipped them to my Toronto office UPS, no charge.

The only minor annoyance was they kept me waiting for over 30 minutes over a coffee and some donuts, verifying the USD Bank Draft I brought them. They're the ones that request a draft instead of a certified cheque, so I was not sure why it took so long or what they were doing after I gave it to them.

Over all a good experience. IMO

...yeah, it's about 190 miles from here, JT ...the grandkids are down there ...sometimes I stop by Ford to see what's on the lot/floor. This past week they were well stocked. Tons of Fiestas and Edges. On the side of the lot they had a curious 'fleet' of about 25 identical Crown Vic Police Interceptors in civi paint ...Ford must have had a close-out fire sale on them ...didn't ask how much -lol.

Crown Vics are made in :canada: and that has created some consternation here, as the plant is scheduled to close in 2011 and the town is wondering if FORD will re-tool for another model, if not, many jobs are lost. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Crown_Victoria

As for Winner Ford, I was blown away by the size of the dealership when I got dropped off there. I dealt with the owner's brother who was a nice enough chap but then shortly after I picked up the car he went on some kind of medical leave and I just dealt with the Service Manager after he left to get my take off parts shipped.

I know they are pretty invlocved with the Phillies Baseball Club and provde a lot of the ball players cars and trucks and stuff, as there were a few Saleen SC F150 Harley Trucks there that were all beaten all to He11 with curbed wheels and 1 had a dented tail gate, I asked what was going on with all of these really nice, relatively rare HD trucks with the Saleen SCs on them and was told they were not taken care of very well be the baseball players. :doh2:

There was also a black Ford GT in for service when I was there too and I had a look and thought that their service department wasn't very busy for such a massive dealership.

As for South Jersey what a revelation compared to the armpit of North Jersey :wow2:, it was my first time to that part of the state and it has some very nice areas and friendly people.

68fastback
05-23-2011, 04:17 AM
they're not far from Haddenfield -- really nice, old, very upscale community ...lots of middle class working families in Cherry Hill ...prolly why they have so many Edges in stock. Seems I always see old Mercedes that are clearly just old daily drivers ...and Bimmers and Lexi (lol) are everywhere there -lol.

Funny you mentioned about how quiet the service department was. As I recall the whole place has been very quiet each time I've been there, but it is in the center of a sprawling large 'bedroom' community so possibly it's much busier on the weekend ...when I'm usually not there. NJ is a fairly small state but it has the highest population density of any state in the US. It has almost no native economy (except for the Trenton statistical economic unit) ...most all of NJ economics are driven by NYC (huge commuter population mostly in the north) and Philly.

That area is very nice. In the last week the kids had offers on two houses rejected -- both in the Collingswood area (much like Haddonfield but at half the price). They still have a place in Vegas that's now underwater but, fortunately, rented to a chef friend.

Believe me...if you had it you would know it, even without hearing it. You would feel it as well.

When they removed the old shaft I noticed the spline was fairly dry other than what looked like a little tranny fluid.

The spline on the new driveshaft came already packed with a pretty blue grease.
