View Full Version : Third Problem W/ The SHO

Tommy Gun

This is kinda a simple thing, but should be very very important in Ford's eyes.

A little bit after getting the car we noticed the front Ford emblem looked like it was peeling?

Well now at 8000 miles it is getting real noticeable. The car has zero chips on the front of it and the painted grill has zero chips so I know it is not chipped.

Here is a pic of it. Just sent pics in today to have them order one so it can be replaced during the next oil change. (Hopefully w/o causing another issue. :nonono: )

The emblem on my Expedition's grille has also peeled. There is hardly any blue left on it.

I've been told there is nothing Ford will do about it.

Really?

At what age/mileage did you bring it up?

i can actually see alot of imperfections in it (dimples), even in the wording...whats up with that...even some of the areas where paint is gone i see the dimples...

The whole thing close up is bad.

There is a same sized one on the trunk and it looks perfect.

yea, but its not getting hit with full force windage either...makes me wonder about the casting process. you can clearly see them in the letter plating

I've only had it 3 years, but I believe I brought it up in the first year. That, along with the corroding aluminum on the hood and rear lift gate...

It looks like someone ran a sand blaster over it. Those chips remind me of my 05 Mustang GT. It had a lot of chips all over the front end. It was caused from following traffic too close and running along the median wall. There is a lot of dirt there that gets kicked up.

Maybe we should design a SU emblem (it's oval too, right) to replace your FORD one.

Johnny Dangerously
02-11-2011, 09:30 PM
Although you shouldn't have to do something like this, you can get a small piece of clear bra material & put it over the emblem.

I did it to my stars & stripes pony emblem, but it was a year after I installed the emblem on my car. It does a pretty good job of keeping it preserved.

CH53Driver

:wow2: that sucks. If there was any part of the car you think Ford would replace without a big stink it would be that part considering it's their nameplate!:doh2:

That's what I was thinking.

And this isn't from being chipped by road debris.

Joe G

The company that makes those is here in Minnesota. I've been to the plant many times (though they may have a few suppliers for this stuff, dunno).

The past 3 company cars have all had issues just like this (and they weren't due to road debris or chipping). 2 were Fords, one was a Chevy :nonono:.

I think it's just the cheap "metalized" plastic that they use now vs. the more sturdy older more solid emblems of years ago.

Nice tech post, Moderator dufus. :nonono:

I was addressing the problem ...the Canadian way...:shades:

Didn't the old blue oval emblems have the emblem under the clear plastic like the wheel cap have? They didn't have any problems chipping.

68fastback
02-12-2011, 03:24 AM
...should be no prob having them replace it ...isn't there a 3/36 bumper to bumper warranty?

After they replace it a spray clear-coat might do the trick?

Looks like road debris to me? Probably sand from this winter's storms. Looks like the paint is very thin and not clear coated like the car's paint, that's why I mentioned the fact that the paint is on the outside where is is subject to this type of thing and not under the plastic like other emblem trim pieces are. Even if this is replaced with another like it I see it happening again and again.

It has been this way for months.

The grill around it is a painted grill and does not have a chip/spot on it, neither does the hood or lower fascia.

The car is usually not driven in bad weather at all and has not been out much at all this winter.

The most abuse it has probably seen is driving to Florida twice.

Then this manufacture in Sota must have some Tape of Bill Ford Jr. or something as why would they keep using them when the problem is so widespread?

I see you don't read back, so I'll say it again. I've had this kind of problem with all 3 of my last company cars (2 Ford, 1 Chebby and actually I checked today and my one year old Dodge also has it as well). I think is an issue with most of the metalized plastic nowadays. :nonono:

Birdman

IMO it's a mfg defect like I said in my first post. :nonono:

I agree with you, it looks like the paint they use is no where near as tough as the paint on the rest of the car. That's why i said the emblems that are painted from the back side and show through the clear plastic won't fail like these poorly done surface painted plastic emblems. (Example: the Ford emblem on the rear deck lid of my T-Bird is painted from the back side of the clear plastic and it is still in perfect condition)

It must be a lot cheaper to manufacture the externally painted ones and it looks like the bean counters won out.

If there is one thing FORD would take ownership of, it's the Quality and control of the Brand Emblems on their vehicles, this is a JOKE.

There seems to be a real disconnect between FORD Dealers, FORD RACING and FORD Corporate that hinders their customers when trying to sort simple issues. JMO

Once upon a time there was a cute little beagle born to a loving couple in NYC.
But the Big Apple was no longer in thier future, so they packed up and moved south.
The little pooch grew like a weed and started leaving deposits in the corners of the room,
so they sent him off to doggie training school where he resided in an old Ford with torn seats.
This was a turning point in the young pooch's life...

...no, uploaded .gif from my computer ...they always used to work when I was on Win-XP. On Vista even tho I saved them the same way (simple "save as") they are unreliable. However, if I saved it with XP and now upload it with Vista, it will work, bu if I save it with Vista and then upload with Vista it's unreliable, even though they will 'run' fine when I veiw them locally. Even that is different. Using the same Windows viewer, on XP it would open all .gifs no prob. On Vista, it will open some but others it wants to open in IE. Vista has some quirks for sure.

Thought JoeGee said these Badges were made in SOTA?

I know some of them are. I've been to the plant quite a few times recently. I was actually with 2 of the sons of the owner all week at a VIP conference.

Would be interesting to see what the quality differences would be between the :bandit: vs. :unitedstates: versions (if they both make the same size one).

Was out with these guys again today.

Saw a big run of Raptor plates, and the tri-bar Mustang faux rear gas caps. They said they were making special Boss 302 ones last week, but I couldn't see them.

I forgot again to get one for you. :sorry:

Made in Mexico. :nonono:

.I had a friend once who owned a business. He bought some "made in the USA" tags for on his machines. The tags said "Made in China" on the back of them. :irony:
