There's a Chicagoland Mustang event mid Sept at Byron Dragway in Byron, IL and Ford Days at Great Lakes in Union Grove, WI the first week of Oct. Should be getting a little drier by then. Hoping for a 10.7 when it cools down. Still on a factory Eaton with a Posi port.

Just checked......could you please add L and P to the "goodies"? Thanks.

Just asked to have my mods updated. Factory Eaton with a Posi port. The 60 wasn't anything to write home about as they'd just had a GM car puke a diff and they'd worked on the track for an hour to get it in race condition. There still wasn't the bite there should have been. It SHOULD be high 1.50's. Dyno numbers are goofy. It's never dyno'd any higher than 565/570 SAE on a Dynojet. That said, there aren't a lot of 4,000 pound cars that run 131mph in this weather with 565 rwhp, so take it for what it's worth. The answer is: I don't know what it makes, but all the calculators suggest 565 may be a tick low. bj

Good job bj, wow.

Question....do you guys put some type of tape on the fenders behind the wheel when racing to prevent chips and rubber shavings from sticking? If so, is the blue painters tape ok? or will it stick too much or not enough?

Iceman
09-14-2010, 03:44 PM
I don't put anything but what I have seen some do is out on that clear bra stuff to protect it. Others have put on a thick layer of wax that they then wipe off after racing. I would think the blue tape would be fine but I hav never messed with it. I have a detailet to remove the rubber and rock chips are a part of life.....though I've never gotten any bad chips at the strip. The road there and back is much worse IMO.

I'm glad it's not that.

Sorry tonight sucked. Looking forward to the story.

There is a friend of mine named Bob (no Joe, not Bob Barker, a different Bob...and yes, for all you other dufi, I DO have a friend named Bob Barker). Bob is a retired engineer, and avid car guy. He owns a Buick T-Type...I think it's an 86? We were going to ORP (O'Reilly Raceway Park, aka Indianapolis Raceway Park) last Tuesday night. I wanted to try out my car for the first time with the drag radials, L&M TB, and 3.73 gear. We pulled into ORP , drove about 1/4 mile down the driveway, saw the guy taking money, and stopped in a short line of about 4 cars. Bob jumped out of his car and started looking at his rear tire. He said he had heard something just in the last few hundred yards.

Sure enough, there was a large bolt in his tire. A bit of spitting and we determined it was leaking. :doh2: He doesn't carry a spare to reduce weight. I didn't think it was right to allow Bob to drive home alone (60 miles away) on this tenuous tire, so we both turned around and I followed him home. We stopped to check pressure, filled to 36, and when we got home it had 32 psi.

No racing. :yellowcard3:

Bob's car has a 3.8L V-6 GN engine, and he's modified it extensively. He's putting out over 600 FWHP, and his car runs 10.8 typically. He can adjust boost quickly at the track simply by adjusting the wastegate rod. I really wanted to see him run, and maybe even run against him even though I would have lost.

We'll try again soon, we can only do this on Tuesday nights.

Chris - not to complicate things, but the TS guys have made a lot of updates to the thread over there - and I don't know that they've made it over here. Has anyone posted that we're consolidating? I'll make a ref over there to this thread.

I've not kept up with TS. I just have been too busy to do much on the forums lately. I jump on here and here only when I can and I read through what I can. Eventually I may slow down as my work usually eases up about mid Oct. but this yr. I have some difficult clients and my last bit of work for them is killing me.

Ok, I've been out of town for a few days, thus the delay on my night at the Track.

I sent an email at work to some interested friends, so I'll just copy/paste it here rather than re-writing.

Went alone. Here's the full story, as a few people wanted an update.

Got there about 5:15, went through tech inspection with no issues. It was $15 to race. Temp was hot...low '90s I would estimate.

The format has changed slightly, they run both street tires and slicks on the same night now, although they had us stage in separate lanes and did not run a slick car against a street tire car.

Bob, I did NOT have to get a racer's card...I was able to proceed directly from tech inspection to staging, although I didn't because I wanted to let air out of my tires.

I dropped the tire pressure to 22 at first, then proceeded to staging. The guy got onto me while I was in pre-staging for having my A/C on, as some water was coming out underneath my car...no big deal but it was soooo hot with the helmet on and all.

I don't have the time sheets on me (they are at home), so I don't have exact times for each run, but I remember the key points and I'll highlight them here. To calibrate everyone, last year I ran a best of 12.2 @ 126 MPH with a 2.1 0-60 ft. Since then I've added a dual 66mm L&M throttle body, which should be good for about 15-20 HP, a 3.73 gear vs. the stock 3.31, and a set of Nitto NT555R drag radials, which are about .75" taller...dropping the effective gear ratio from 3.73 to about 3.64 per my Microsoft Excel calculations. I ran all runs with traction control off (I've tried it last year with it on, and it's too "invasive" for my liking).

I ran 5 runs total. Before the final pass I dropped tire pressure to about 14 psi. I did much better on launch, with a 1.8 0-60 ft, but this caused a different problem as near the end of the track I was stretching the rev limiter and didn't want to shift again to 5th gear....ultimately I tried to shift but missed...so my time was the best of the night at 11.99, but my trap speed was only 109 MPH. I think the car has an 11.7 in it if I can get the shift points worked out better...and I probably can eclipse the 130 MPH mark too! They were giving out plaques for fastest of each street and strip, but it was in terms of ET and not trap speed....but I had the fastest trap speed of the street cars by the time I had left the track.

I do have one mechanical problem...but it existed even before racing. During hard shifts or burnouts, I have a banging noise in the rear suspension. I'm guessing it's one of the poly lower control arm bushings...they see tremendous forces during launch and hard shifts. I'll get the car up on jacks and pull the arms out to check them soon...it only happens on hard shifts and is not at all noticeable during normal driving. The other possibility is the one-piece driveshaft hitting something...clearances are tight with my Dynotech 1-piece aluminum, and I do have safety loops that I had to space down with washers slightly.

For those of you who don't know my car, here is a list of current modifications:

2007 GT500 with 5.4L DOHC (cast iron block, aluminum head), dyno tested at 441 RWHP stock
Added Ford Racing TVS 2.3L S/C with 2.6" quick-change upper pulley, increasing boost from 7.5 psi to 15 psi
Tune from Evolution performance
Ford racing cold air kit with open element filter
Steeda Tri-Ax short throw shifter, Hurst handle and white ball
Dynotech 1-piece 3.5" aluminum driveshaft and BMR safety loops front and rear
KR mufflers
Car weighed 3,912 pounds stock without driver....and I've lightened it via the following...estimate 50 pounds lighter since some of the components I added also increased the weight such as safety loops

aluminum driveshaft
lower control arms in rear
mufflers
axle counterweights removed

Dyno tested at 596 RWHP before following mods were made...no dyno test since
Nitto NT555R drag radials .75" taller than stock tires
L&M dual 66mm throttle body
3.73 ring and pinion from Ford Racing

How much past 6250 were you going to trap with 14psi? Seems 13-14psi works well for many.

Dave...with 4.10s I was crossing at 6400 on 26" M/T 305/35/18s. I now run the same 4.10s with 28" M&H Racemaster DRs which give me about 3.94 effective.
That puts me at around 6200 at the end (in 4th). My limiter is set at 6600.

I launch at 4200 and shift about 6200 each time.

You've made a BUNCH of changes since I last saw your car. Congrats and have fun.

14psi tire pressure, m/t 305/35/18dr. No line lock toe the break and yes 2nd gear burnout :) I hold the rpm around 5k and feather the clutch out and roll on into the throttle. Proberly not the best way but its working for me at this time.

You have to launch a clutch car high - Lots of serious clutch racers suggest launching at the shift point (probably around 6500 on a GT500). The engine is going to pull down coming out of the hole with a traditional (non-slipper) clutch and you would really like to keep it from pulling down lower than the RPM you will go to following a shift. With these supercharged modulars I think that point is not lower than 4500 RPM. If you are traction limited, you will have to launch lower or slip the clutch or both, or get some better tires and a better suspension setup.

With a slipper clutch and small tires I have had the best luck launching at the lower edge of my power band and driving into it, but with a clutch setup that NEVER pulls the engine down. When I look on my datalog I see a flat line at 6300 RPM (two step set point), then RPM just goes up although I take around 35% clutch slip right out of the hole. If you are setting a slipper clutch up and it pulls down out of the hole, you have it set too tight and need to back the base pressure off some more.

If you are launching your GT500 or Terminator at 2000 RPM, you are just giving it away at the start line!

Matthew, I'm guessing this isn't like a road racing bike's slipper clutch (to eliminate engine-compression back-torque in turns) but raather one that provides some kind of programmable engagement for repeatability ...so you can keep the enigne in it's sweet spot from launch through the 1-2 shift?

I think there would be lots of interest in hearing more about it -- what type/brand you run and how you set it up (which you touched on a bit).

Curious about how it's actually managed and operates. E.g. does it use air-pressure (like a fuel car) or an electric servo or something? How do you interface with it ...do you specify time or rpm or torque limits -- or do you just dial in more/less engagement period, observe the results, and then tweak it from there?

Maybe another thread...

Very nice runs and input on the launch. With the GT500 the other issue (after traction) is the need to build the rear up to handle when you do get the traction. I learned it the hard way. These are heavy cars. I snapped my driverside axel and cracked the dif. housing when I finally got traction and did a high rpm launch. I think I was at about 5500 rpm and did not slip the cluth very much and with the slicks really heated and down to about 15psi they hooked hard. THe front lifted then pop and I was off to the side before I was 3 car lengths off the line.

I still don't have it fully build but I do have the FRPP diff cover and tubes welded now. I kept the same diff (Tru-trac) as it held up well and I like it on the street.

What year is your car? Looks like you have it dialed in nice.

I run a McLeod Soft-Lok which is a single disc solid hub sintered iron Long style slipper clutch. There are two adjustments with this type of clutch - Base Pressure and Centrifugal Advance. The base pressure is adjusted with six spring adjusters on the back face of the pressure plate which you access through a small hole in the bellhousing with a hex key. The centrifugal advance is adjusted by changing counterweights on the three clutch fingers which can be done through the window on a 6.1W bellhousing or if you are brave it can be done through the hole that the clutch fork uses on the side of the bellhousing. In my case with the Lenco ST1200 you can also adjust individual shift pressures by turning the shift towers on each case on the transmission.

As RPM increases, clutch pressure increases, and as the sintered iron disc heats up its coefficient of friction inreases too. The idea with a clutch like this is to run a low base pressure and let the clutch slip coming out of the hole, then as the material heats and the RPM increases the centrifugal advance will cause it to lock up down track. It should slip a little on each shift, but give 0 slip after the gear change. You really do need data acquisition to get a clutch like this setup properly as the general method is to keep backing down base pressure until it hazes a little in top gear, then tighten it back up until it locks right up. To give you a rough idea, a typical performance street clutch will have something like 2500 psi of base pressure, while I run the Soft-Lok with around 650 psi of base pressure.

Slipper clutches like this are much easier on driveline parts like axles and driveshafts, and allow you to balance your power and traction carefully for the best use of power possible. If you watch my car in action you will see that it lifts the front wheels off the ground a few inches, but never does a crazy wheelstand. That's how the pro cars do it too - when you are wheelstanding you are wasting your energy rotating the car, and risking damage when it comes back down. A slipper clutch helps to achieve this kind of launch.

The Ford 8.8 can be built pretty tough, but the heavier the car the harder it is on it. Usually good control arms, welded tubes and a diff cover are enough to keep most GT500's together with slicks and serious launches. If you get the wheels hopping like you will with the stock control arms it is easy to snap an axle. Some tracks seem to be harder on axles than others too.

Thanks for the compliment. We have been working on this car for over 10 years now to get it where it is. It is a 1990 Coupe. Still has power windows and locks, and it is all steel panels (except the hood) and all glass windows. It weighs 3160 on the track with only the driver's seat. More if I run the passenger seat as well.

Good enough that a bunch of people left on flatbeds!:doh2:

Fortunately, I wasn't one of them, but it is making a lot of new noises!!

Dunno. Tough to hear for the gear whine! It sounded like I was going over tar strips...could hear and feel a thump (albeit slight) around 80mph on the highway. I'll put it on the rack tomorrow and start looking around. Before next season I'll change all the bushings in the control arms, etc. I need to do a gear swap and should probably put in a new clutch while I'm playing around down there. I'm still on a stock clutch and have 23k on it. A very ugly 23k.

For now, time for a bath and spa treatment. I've got enough rubber in the wells to make a bicycle tire.

Thought about it this year but it would need to lose some pounds to do it consistently. That and I could be missing a few items that would keep me from passing tech.

News update:

Stock clutch was gettin' a little crunchy. Posi was shot. So.....

RXT with heavy flywheel
Eaton hi-perf posi from Strange
Fresh set of 4.10s
Fresh bushings in the BMR lowers and J&M upper
Oh...and just for grins I'm gonna toss a new blower belt on it

I have a, uh, "project" throttle body I'm gonna put on it since the Whipple mono would be a crappy way to break in a new clutch. Too much slipping needed.

That oughta do it for my next few Christmases. (Ouch. Ya play, ya pay)
