The factory goodyear's may not be suitable or safe for such a road trip... The MT Dr's are out of the question, so any suggestions?

Not sure what you mean here Dog as long as temps are above 40* the stock F1's are fine. Is there something else that factors in about this trip that I'm missing?

"Spring" doesn't hit :canada: until mid-July, so he may need more traction while pushing that snow plow with the GT500.

I bought a set of the KR tires from Shelby for $399 for the set. They are sitting in my garage. I can ship those up to you if you need to use them.
How many hours will it be one way?

Maybe some snow, very wet roads for sure.... Temp should be ok though by the end of April so that may not be a factor...

I have a set of those, came with the Alcoas... I run the front ones with my Dr's.... A curb ate one of the rear tires, cheap sidewalls... Lol... :yellowcard3:
Mapquest says 30 hours each way...

I have found that the stock F1s are good with wet, but tend not to clear snow and ice, and can turn into slicks.......if you really have to drive thru much snow, trailering is about the only choice....just a little snow......F1s with traction control on and easy driving should be just fine.
"Spring" doesn't hit ALBERTA until mid-July, so he may need more traction while pushing that snow plow with the GT500.

I sorted that for ya...time to move DOG, my Car is out. March 11th, this year, FEB 28th, 2010.
TORONTO = Minimal snow and mild winters.
Seriously, if you think you will encounter snow on you trip you better go for a hi-performance ALL-Season, that is the best you will do for tires this sz.

Spring is so unpredictable here, it can drop below zero and snow in may... :doh2: A set of all seasons may be a safe way to go just in case... I will monitor the weather and decide just before I leave but thought it might be good to check the options in advance... Trailering isn't an option, I bought the car to drive it!!
So, what are some good hi perf all season brands? Might be hard to find the same sizes as the goodyears...

Michelin and Bridgestone and Goodyear all make some hi-performance ALL-Seasons in the stock 18" sizes for the GT500, www.costco.ca have a good tire finder tool.

How much for the rears?
I have the front KR goodyears mounted and road force balanced on my Alcoas and they are like new... One of the back ones has the toasted sidewall and I left the other rear one outside (rimless) to freeze all winter so it could be screwed now too, dunno...
But instead of replacing all 4 tires I could get two new KR rears and just take it easy when the temps are cold in the mornings...
Shelby has them for three hun each but no way would they be here next week... :doh2:
Would the tire that froze be ok? If so I would only need one...

That tire didn't just freeze DOG, it went into Glacier MODE with the extreme prolonged cold temps you get in BERTA, I would call the 1-800 Goodyear number and ask them, they'll now the limitations of the compound in their tires better than anyone...JMO

FYI, I drive my car year round (even in sub 40 temps) and have yet to have any problems. Snow/ice, different story as I maroon the Mrs. and take her car.

Not sure if I would put this one back on... Ice may have cracked some of the rubber... I hadn't intended on leaving it outside, it got buried in the first snow and has been there all winter... Opps... :doh2:

A hi-po tire that has been frozen and then thawed I would not put on a 50K hi-po vehicle. Just not worth it. I'd spend the 1K and replace all your tires for the trip.

I love my KDW's. Not sure if they're any different in th cold than the stockers, but they're great in the summer.

Does it ever get warm where you live? I mean, you live in an igloo right? After all, you're further north than JT. :look:

Thanks for the offer VK!! I was talking to Karl this morning to see if he can get the goodyear KR tires... He can't, something about the licensing rights...

Funny this subject came up as I have been doing a bit of research on tires as I want to be able to drive the Darkmobile year round and the Toyos are shite on wet roads. I found a review of various high performance tires and surprisingly a VERY affordable option was the Hankook Ventus V12 Evo K110. Came in second behind a Dunlop. Found the Hankooks at Discount tire Direct for $218/per in the size I can use (295/30-18).
As far as keeping the stock size, don't worry. Get what fits on the rim size and as long as it is close to stock, you should be fine.

June, July,Aug and Sept are usually pretty warm... We only have the luxury of igloos for the winter, in summer we sew a few polar bear hides together for a tent, then throw some baby seal skins on the ground, light a fire in the middle and call it home...

Another good idea!! Thanks!! I think the standards are P285/40R18 and the KRs are P285/40ZR18... Fountain Tire is a great company!!
What are the KDWs worth?
