View Full Version : Nitto Tire thoughts ?

Tommy Gun
03-25-2011, 11:20 PM
I was looking at buying another set of Nitto track tires later this year.

Nitto's are a Japanese tire and I've been trying to find if they are affected by the earthquake situation, but everything seems to be hush hush on many Japanese products.

I'd like to wait, but don't want to find out in 6 months these tires are no longer available, they are my favorite track tire.

Any thoughts? Any one heard any word on Nitto or other aftermarket car products coming from Japan?

Edit-Never mind, I missed the part that you were already running Nitto's. I saw Nitto's and advice and thought you were asking about them. I'm sure there are plenty of places that still have them in stock so I'd order a set now while you can get them.

That was a month ago, the earthquake deal was just last week. :groan:

The title of this thread is what threw me off. I thought you were asking about Nitto tires.:boink: Joker had asked this same question (I believe it was him if memory serves me correctly). I realized after my first response to this thread that you were already running them, you were just asking about supply concerns with the recent events in Japan. Once again, if you like 'em that much I'd order a set now (or two sets) that way you got them while this mess in Japan gets sorted out.

I use the NT 555 R II 's at the track and they are awesome tires w/ lot's of stick.

I should have some info on that for you in a couple weeks. I have the NT 555R Drag Radials on the back now and they are SOOOOO much stickier than stock. They did get scary on the way home from SF but i was driving through a tornado so it was just plain scary.

I like the MT dr's I have but they suck in the rain and are a bit iffy at high speed corners and such... I need to replace the goodyears on my factory rims... I could just order two of the KR goodyears from Shelby as they are actually the cheapest there, but those tires have probably been sitting around for four years already... I looked at the BFG kdw's but don't really care for the tread pattern... The 555 EP's have a cool tread look, are rated good in rain, and used a lot in drifting!! Seem to be decently priced at discount tire...

You have 18" so you could get them.

Yes I am running the R888's and they are not the best tire in the rain, BUT they aren't terrible either. My guidance from Van was that they are good unless I was in a downpour, then I should pull off the road.

I am running the same size all around because my Griggs suspension allows it.

50's would look sweet and be good for traction but would sacrifice handling... I run the DR's with the KR goodyears on the front 90% of the time and would use a road set for highway trips and drifting...

I mounted them on the ones I already had. So they are on 9's up front and 10's in the rear. I think it looks really good. Didn't really make a difference in the stance and I have fully adjustable suspension now so I could always change it if I wanted or needed to.

As for the feel, I like it alot better then before. You get more feedback from the road and it feels really stable to me. On the track it was awesome. No were near as much understeer coming into a corner too hot.

I have no regrets on going with the 275's all the way around. I wish Nitto made a 295-305 in this size as I would put those on the rear but right now this is the set-up I will be using until something better is found at an affordable price.

Some of that increased stability must be because of your new suspension components you installed, not just the rubber, correct?

How could you go to 295 or a 305 with the Alcoas and not rub in the rear? (That doesn't sound right :look:)

I'm sure the Grigg's has something to do with it:shades: But I'm also sure that the increase in availible tire contact patch plays a significant part in it also.

I know of several people that are running 295's on the Alcoa's in the rear with no rubbing issues. So I would have no problem trying them in the rear. 305's might be too much though.

One of these days when I hit the lottory I'll try to have my rims widened and put a wider tire on.

Sorry to hear that Dog. I really like these tires so far. They grip well, not as good as the DR's, but have a smoother ride and are WAY better than stock. It's still easy to break them loose (which I like!) but they don't get all squirely like the Goodyears. It's much easier to control the traction with throttle adjustment. They are also quieter when spinning like the stockers instead of screaming like the DR's. I just recieved the replacement TPMS and band from AM and if I can get it installed and trained I will be VERY happy overall with this setup.

Finally got a chance to go for a decent drive on the new wheels and tires. I really like the Nitto's! They are a little stiffer ride than stock but grip much better (though not as good as the DR's) and even driving around with the center console removed (long story explained in other threads) I didn't notice any increased road noise. I did get a little worried when I got a slight vibration at around 60 mph but it smoothed out with increased speed.I had a quick sprint up to 100 and didn't notice it come back. So far so good and NO MORE TPMS WARNING!

That's about a 1.5" net difference in tire diameter between the two (if that's of interest):

315 mm x .40 = 126.00 mm mounted sidewall height
305 mm x .35 = 106.75 mm mounted sidewall height

Looking at track tires again. Haven't bought any in about 3 years now.

Looking at Toyo's comp tires.

Factory tires are 19", 255-40ZR19 front, 275-40ZR19 rear, 9" rims front 9.5" rear

Looking to maybe put 10" all around to be able to have a little wider tire and be able to rotate them all around.

Couple questions about what I found. First is rated weight and second is revs per mile.

Factory rated tire weight are

1565front
1819 rear

Toyo weights

1279 front ( <concern? 286lbs less than factory)
1764 rear

Concern with weights is how much lower the available front tires are and how will that effect diving into corners...and other concerns?

Factory revs

769 front (tire diam. 27")
750 rear (tire diam. 27.7")

Toyo revs

821 front (tire diam. 25.3")
798 rear (tire diam. 26.0")

Factory weights on door decal are

2325 gross front
2440 gross rear

Car is 3850 lbs. :oink:

My concern w revs is how far off of shifting points I will now be at the track. Shifting earlier now or later?

Bill, you didn't say what the aspect ratio is for the Toyo comps, but using their revs/mile (probably more accurate anyway) it's clear they're a lower profile tire overall vs "factory." Are you presently running the factory tires? If so, comparo below is based on those nums. (if not, below is meaningless -lol).

So, comparing to factory, the Toyos will have the effect of delivering equivalent of a 3.97 diff if you presently have a 3.73 (use a 1.064 multiplier if you have a different diff ratio)

That will have the effect of having to pull 6.4% more revs for the same speed: goodness if you need more power/tq out of turns (who doesn't?!) and have revs to spare and don't mind having to up-shift a bit earlier and down-shift a bit later ...same a diff swap.

If you wanted to keep your revs and drive-ratio the same as with the factory tires you're running today, you'd need 315x35s on the 10s (275 x .4 = 110/.35 = 314.3).

That front weight rating could be a real concern (dunno) -- if your F/R WD is currently around 60/40 (to be conservative) you'd be pushing a full 90% of that rating -- factory is a little over 80% -- but I don't know how close it's safe to push them ...maybe a call to Toyo will give some guidance on that. Else

Tommy Gun
12-11-2016, 08:51 PM
Oops

Toyo's I'm looking at are Toyo Proxes R888R

265-30ZR19 front
295-30ZR19 rear

Trying to find out at the moment if I can run the 295-30ZR19's front and rear! (Fitment)

Those would be 1764lb rating, 10"-11" rim, 11.9 wide , 26" diam, 798 revs

(concern is width on front) not concerned w rubbing on the street w tight turning because you don't see super tight turning on the track. I'm looking at more tread on the ground, but I know there are many factors involved when going to a wider front tire and don't want to screw things up...I don't have an engineer on call. :(

Tommy Gun
12-11-2016, 08:59 PM
I have the factory 2015 GT performance pack wheels and tires on the car for the track.

I have a set of 20" wheels w Nittos that came w the car for street use, but I bottom them out w spirited driving. Only reason I use them on the street is because they look good, they are a $4000 set of rims/tires that came w the car. :faint: Not useful on the track because I would bottom out several times at ares at VIR, even w the stiffer springs on the car.

I use to bottom out my SN95 at one point of the track at VIR from driving hard in a certain corner called the rollercoaster, don't want to do it w this car. Lol

68fastback
12-11-2016, 10:54 PM
Ah, 30s ...so that's why the Toyos revs/mi is higher.

Yeah, for tread on the ground you'd love to run 315 35 (or 30s if want more revs) or similar, but you could only follow RR-radius turns :giggle:

Strange that' you'd bottom out with 20s but not with 19s? Are the Nittos on the 20s super low profile or something?

Tommy Gun
12-12-2016, 12:28 AM
I dont think 315's would fit, that's a lot wider I think.

Love to run the widest I can, but don't know what that is on the GT.

Wheels and tires on the 20's I guess are just big enough that I've bottomed them out a few places.

68fastback
12-12-2016, 12:50 AM
Yeah, 315s would be great but probably don't fit ...supposedly ( I remember reading long ago) the '15-ups have a little more tire clearance than earlier but dunno how much/exactly where.

Bill, are talking bottoming the car when running the 20s or bottoming the tires on the wheel well ...or?

Tommy Gun
12-12-2016, 12:52 AM
Tires rubbing wheel wells at big dips in road at speed.

68fastback
12-12-2016, 12:59 AM
Ah, that makes sense for the 20s ...also makes the possibility of 315s remote on any size wheel ...possibly 275 40s just might be about the widest for a single size so you can still F/R rotate that won't drop your revs (won't numerically lower effective diff ratio) which you probably would not want to have happen. Possibly you can go a super low profile 20s and preserve revs and still clear the wheel well lip? ...i.e. low ratio 20s (20x25s?) that list revs/mi close to the 19 275 40s. Even if there is you'd have a lot less sidewall and more wheel ...would probably be considerably rougher and likely much more sensitive to tire pressure too.

That should fit fine height-wise as long as the extra 0.39" (10mm) width is okay -- 295 30s are a much smaller diameter/rolling-radius than the 275 40s you have now but the lower profile will drop (raise numerically) your final drive ratio a lot -- like 24% ...makes a 3.73 into 4.63!
Even 295 35s (still about .39" wider than the 275s) will also drop drive ratio but by only about 6% (3.96 equivalent drive ratio assuming you run 3.73 gears) and will still be slightly (6%) smaller overall in diameter ...if they make 295 35s.

All the above calculations assume the manufacturers are stamping the ratios consistently, which isn't always the case, so better to use their revs/mile numbers for a sanity check. Same for the overall height and width -- they are not always consistent so best to use their published numbers, but 295 35s are very close to what you have now ...slightly smaller diameter (6%) and only 0.39" wider if manufacturers are being consistent.

Bummer! What thread were we talking about this stuff in ...wondering how the 798 compares to what you have today.

Ok, so that's only 6.4% under your current 275/40 rears ...not bad!! ...your 3.73s would become like 3.94s and if the extra width is ok you'd have a bit additional fender lip height clearance too (if that matters) vs current rears.

You mean 275/40 rears right?

Good thing not too much difference because I looked at Nittos instead of Toyo's and no better tire choice for 19's :nonono:

Definitely looking for wider as well as softer compound. I have GT350's to keep up with. :look:

Toyo's 295 30ZR19's front and rear. May need a 1/4" spacer up front, not sure yet.

+/- 6.4% ...should work well -- hope so!
As long as you're not presently red-lined down the end of the longest straight you should be fine ...will compress on-track shift points a bit but will also get you accelerating out of turns a bit quicker too.
The lower sidewall profile may want more shock damping and possibly a stiffer front stabilizer bar -- both will help exploit the additional sidewall responsiveness ...quicker turn-in and transitions ...should make for quicker set-up and more stability going into turns if damping and stabilizer are tuned right.

So, is it common to add a stiffer/adjustable swaybar to the front without changing the rear also?

Can't find any good reads on it, just bits of info that a more experienced suspension tuner would understand. Lol

Don't want to kill the nice ride of the car, but would be nice to stiffen it up for the track...if it really helps and isn't overkill. :look:

If you were already ideally set up you might not need to touch the rear. A stiffer one up front may help you exploit the additional responsiveness of the lower profile tires by reducing body roll and helping the chassis set-up faster to better match the lower profile tire's ability to do so. The rear can be quite a bit more compliant so may be fine as is. Hard to know without knowing how both are now relative to ideal but I'm assuming the factory set-up was pretty good for the factory tires.

Roll bar change should not affect general ride at all -- just body roll ...it should not make ride harsher but the lower profile tires will affect that.

Stiffer damper settings up front may work better for the lower profile tires ...again, hard to know how it is set now but if you have adjustables, try them damped a bit more. Watch for how it handles the rumble strips ...if they're upsetting the car more than with th eold tires (probably will ...then more damping should help.

Struts/shocks are all stock and I doubt adjustable. Only springs were changed.

Didn't want to go as far as changing struts/shocks til I really figure out if I want to sell both cars for the GT350 or not. :(

Months done the road before I even think of doing that...

68fastback

Yeah, makes sense ...no point spending more on it if you might go that route in the next year or so ...even with no other changes the wider, lower-profile tires should be an improvement -- some from better handling and some from higher final drive ratio -- tho will make ride a little harsher.
Setting accurate tire pressure on 30s will be important -- the lower the profile the more it matters.
Bill, will be great to hear about what changes you see when you run it. Are you done for the season now?

Tommy Gun
12-27-2016, 01:32 AM
Generally on tire pressures we run around 34 lbs. Are you thinking lower profile requires more or less?

Not worried about harsher ride w track tires on, just me in the car.

Next track time is in Feb if temps agree...then April. Tucker wants to go more this year so may do 4 events this year instead of just two. :)

68fastback
12-27-2016, 03:31 PM
If they were the same width they'd require more for sure ...even tho they're 20mm wider I suspect they'll still need a bit more ...maybe try a couple pounds more in the front and adjust from there ...or start at 34 and then try a couple more and see if that works better.
