We used to eat that stuff by the pound when young.

Ritz crackers and the Oscar Mayer brand.

Mom called it "liverwurst", but Nana always called it braunschweiger.

Never knew what it was until I was at least a teenager, but by then Mom was on a "eat healthier" kick and never bought it.

Funny thing is that I found some in Mom's fridge a few years ago and tried it on a cracker like the old days, but it didn't taste like I remembered it. :nonono:

Amazing how experiences 25 years and 1000 miles apart can be so similar!! This was like a trip down memory lane.

And, yeah, it doesn't taste the same ...back then I think it was 'real' ...now there's probably pig noses and kness in it too :rofl3:

If that's the brand you tried, then I'm not surprised. Look for this one:

I'm sure that one's better... but growing up it was always the Oscar Mayer brand.

Schaller & Weber make many varieties of Leberwurst. It's the only way to go...

Obviously, you are an connoisseur, so what is the difference between Braunschweiger and Leberwurst.

Obviously, you are an connoisseur, so what is the difference between Braunschweiger and Leberwurst.

Braunschweiger has fat meat (lips, noses, and other nasty parts) ground up in it (like an "all beef" hot dog).

From WikiPedia:

Braunschweiger (named after Braunschweig (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Braunschweig), Germany (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germany)) is a type of liverwurst (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liverwurst) (pork (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pork) liver (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liver) sausage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sausage)) which, if stuffed in natural casings, is nearly always smoked. Commercial products often contain smoked bacon, and are stuffed into fibrous casings.
The USDA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USDA) requires that the product contain a minimum of 30% liver (pork, calf, veal, beef, etc.), lean meat (can include mechanically separated poultry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mechanically_separated_poultry)), fat meat, binders and seasonings.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Braunschweiger#cite_note-0) A typical commercial formula is about 40% pork liver or scalded beef liver, 30% scalded pork jowl, 20% lean pork trimmings and 10% bacon ends and pieces. Added seasonings include salt and often include white pepper, onion powder or chopped onion, and mace (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nutmeg). Curing ingredients (sodium erythorbate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_erythorbate) and sodium nitrite (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_nitrite)) are optional.

Real Leberwurst has liver, meat, and fat.

Also from Wikiedia:

The German (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_language) Leberwurst (anglicized as liverwurst), that translates literally as "liver (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liver_%28food%29) sausage," is the typical sausage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sausage) served in Germany (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germany), Austria (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austria), Hungary (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hungary), Croatia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Croatia), Slovenia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slovenia), Serbia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serbia), the Netherlands (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netherlands), Finland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finland), Sweden (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweden), Norway (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norway) and Romania (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romania) (especially in Transylvania (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transylvania)).
Most liverwurst varieties are spreadable. Liverwurst normally contains pigs' livers, rather than calves' livers and also contains veal. Other ingredients are meat, fat, and spices including ground black pepper (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_pepper), marjoram (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marjoram), allspice (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allspice), thyme (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thyme), ground mustard seed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mustard_seed), or nutmeg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nutmeg). Many regions in Germany have distinct recipes for liverwurst. Adding ingredients like pieces of onion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onion) or bacon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bacon) to the recipe make each variety of liverwurst very important to cultural identity. For example, the Thüringer Leberwurst (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Th%C3%BCringer_Leberwurst&action=edit&redlink=1) has a Protected Geographical Status (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protected_Geographical_Status) throughout the EU. Recently, more exotic additions such as cowberries (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaccinium_vitis-idaea) and mushrooms (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mushroom) have gained popularity.
