View Full Version : Engine Stalling

This has happened to me a few times already on my wifes 05 Mustang GT. Today when I was entering the highway on the ramp, I pushed in the clutch to downshift and the engine quit. The last time this happened was a couple of weeks ago when I was coming down a hill and I was down shifting to slow down since there was a stop sign at the bottom.
When this does happen, if you try to restart the car, it starts and dies right away. The only way to keep it running is if you turn the key to the off position and then start the engine. It keeps running after that. I checked for any codes but there are none. The CEL is not lit either.
The car has a CAI and a tune which has been on the car since it was about a month old. The car was bought brand new and there hasn't been any updates loaded on to the computer.
What could this be? I don't think it is a downshift problem since it is a coincidence that it happened that way.

maybe a wire that indicates clutch is depressed. Loose maybe...

I had this problem some time ago with a pickup I had and also experienced it when coming to stops as well. I was told to replace the throttle position sensor. Not saying that's the problem, as I am certainly no mechanic...but worth mentioning.

Greg - sorry I can't add much on this topic. I've never had my car die in my Driveway. Maybe I'll get it out this weekend and report back.

I think you transposed some numbers. It is the 005 that is giving me problems, not the 500. :doh2:

I was thinking the same thing but I wanted to find out if anyone might know or experience this problem.

I've never had a problem and I drove standards for 12 years.

It has nothing to do with problems driving a standard. :doh2:

That is strange.
TPS is a good call, but weird it does it when depressing the clutch...unless just a fluke.

I think is a fluke. If you try to start it right away without turning the key to the off position, It wants to start then dies. Turn the key to the off position for a second and it fires back up. It like it resets something.

that also happened with mine as well, VD

W/ 1000's of codes in the computer it is also strange that it doesn't throw a code?

I'll have to see about getting another TPS. I wonder how much those are. I still have the one from my GT500 but I don't think it will work.

I'd check a dealer before relying on eBay, it may actually be cheaper.

I was going to do that tomorrow. I didn't want you to think that I didn't appreciate your help but I really do.

Actually, it does, Greg. When you start from key-off the TB snaps-shut (completely shut) momentarily to re-calibrate that the throttle idle position default (8* if I'm recalling right) is properly set, so that could be why. It's like it's forgetting that setting. I wonder if just pulling the connector to the TPS and spraying the contacts with Electro Clean or equivalent might have an effect somehow? Maybe also dope the plug gasket with white lithium grease to prevent fine dirt/grit from entering ...can't hurt.

Try cleaning the throttle plate with some intake spray cleaner(both sides especially the edges). Carbon build up often is the cause . The throttle closes when the clutch is depressed (usually when braking) if the clearence between the bore and trottle plate is lessened because of carbon build-up the idle will briefly drop too low (not enough idle air) and will cause the engine to stall.

I don't know a whole lot as far as electrical stuff.
I was agreeing more w/ LD on this one, she took a definite step in the right direction w/ talking about throttle position.

Good info. I have never heard that the throttle momentarily shuts when the clutch is depressed. Makes sense now about what he may be experiencing.
I wonder if VD has even tried cleaning it before?
Also, I have heard that Throttle Body spray cleaners can hurt some finish on a superchargers rotors so I have never used them on the GT500?
Do we know if that is true?

Did you check the battery terminals. :sofa:

The battery terminal have no funky buildup like someones terminals on this forum. Ring any bells :monkey:?
Dan and George - Excellent suggestions and I will try them out and let you know.
TG - This car has been mechanically sound since day one. No work has been done on it since the CAI and tune was installed besides the normal maintenance.

If you are using a small amount just to clean the throttle blades it would not be a problem at all.
