View Full Version : Shimmy Shimmy...

I took the first highway trip since pinstalling the Alcoas... I noticed a slight shimmy from about 60 to 70 mph and then a substantial one at like 130+... I had to let off, it was shaking pretty good...

First, are there some clips that have to be removed before putting aftermarket rims on or the Alcoas exempt from that?

It could also be a balance issue... I have also tried many times to retrain the sensors with no luck, so that got me thinking maybe the sensors were removed and used with new bands on the rims the guy put on his KR... Either way I am taking it in tues to get them checked out...

That kind of sounds like a balance issue. If it was an put of round issue or flat spot, you would feel it more at lower speeds. If the TPMS was not installed, your TPMS light would be on. Also have them check to make sure the wheels are not warped.

It sounds like a balance issue, do you have a good tire shop around with a ROADFORCE Balancing Machine?

Here's an article that may help.

Yes, balance.

....I thought I had indeed read about the presence of some retention clips that were not really needed, but could cause a problem.......

The tpms light is on, and I tried for 30 min to train them to no avail... That is why I thought the sensors might have been removed... But would that be enough to throw the balance off?

Thanks JT, I am going to ask the dealership if they have one of those balancers... If not I will do some searching!!

I had to have mine road force balanced. Same as what you described. It took care of the issue.

There may be retention clips on the rotors, but the only time I've seen these be a problem is when someone takes the wheel off, messes up the clip, then tries to put the wheel back on. I never saw a stock clip cause an issue in my 8 years of doing tire work.

I did have to put bands and sensors in them... I also got them roadforce balanced and the guy said they were out of balance bad...

Should be good to go now!!

Yesterday I saw a mustang just like the one at the beginning of the vid!1

Just finished polish, glaze and wet waxing the inner rims... Tomorrow I will do the front of them and put them back on... Then it's smokey burnout time!!

A roadforce balance did the trick... They were off really bad... I had to add sensors and bands too...

I have to swap one rim though, it has a scrape that macially appeared somehow while parked in the garage... Ya, thats it... Gouged the tire sidewall too...

whats all involved with the roadforce balance...

The GSP9700 Vibration Control System includes Hunter's exclusive Road Force Measurement System to help detect potential tire uniformity causes of vibration that are not balance-related. This system utilizes a "road roller" which applies up to 1,400 pounds (635 kg) of force against the wheel and tire assembly to measure their combined uniformity. This simulated road force test helps verify if the assembly is "round" when rolling under load.

The GSP9700 Vibration Control System can also measure lateral and radial rim runout (out of roundness or side-to-side movement) to identify and separate wheel runout from tire runout. The system then calculates the contributions of the wheel and the tire to a potential vibration and presents the service specialist with easy-to-follow instructions on the appropriate corrective actions.
If the wheel and tire are at the edge of acceptable tolerances, Hunter's patented ForceMatching(TM) feature is used to align the high point of the tire with the low spot of the rim. This helps maximize ride quality by minimizing the effects of tire force variation and rim runout.

That's not going to be easy DOG for KR's, do you have a line on one yet?

The garage queens will cringe when they see this!! Lol!! Just caught the edge, but I dunno if it can be fixed... I was thinking of dremeling the rough edge down and just leaving it on, but am not sure if the rubber is toast now cuz of the chunk missing...

May be time for a set of drag radials...

That's a nasty sidewall nic. Sidewalls always make me nervous. High speeds, increased air pressure and a weak sidewall = potential bad day!

I hear that, I wouldn't take it on the highway like that...

What I will prolly end up doing is a few smokey burnouts then throw a set of drag radials on them... I am thinking of switching back to the factory rims for everyday use and saving the alcoas for racing and special occasions...

That's exactly what I'd do. Those KR rims are too rare and hard to get to risk in daily driving IMO.

Yeah, the supersnakes need the 20's for sure!! The 20's look the best too imo...

I ordered a set of Nitto NT05R's for it... They are pretty close to factory size, can't remember the exact numbers... I could have get the M/T's too but they only come in tallerer or smaller size... I didn't want to go with taller and lose all that gearing... For my hspr output I think I will be fine...

The tire shop guy told me that with the MT's, if you do a little burnout and then let them sit for 24 hrs it helps get the oil out of the rubber aand they will last longer...

Not that I would ever think about doing a burnout in my car...
