I have an header exhaust leak and after retightening the bolts(what a pita), it still leaks so I am guessing the gasket is toast... Do I have to use kook header gaskets that are obviously not very good and have to order, or can I use oem gaskets?

I would think anything that made the seal would work. We used to use anything we could find up to peanut butter for old Motor cross bikes and it always worked. The American Racing headers have a nice metal gasket that is reusable....meaning when some moron takes the headers off to have them heat coated a year later the same gaskets still worked fine :) Good luck

Thanks Iceman, I am going to go with new factory gaskets!! Taking it in to get done tomorrow... I am thinking this isn't going to be cheap, but no way am I attemping it after the pita just to try and tighten the bolts...
Only the driver side is leaking but I will get both sides done at the same time...

Won't the guy who installed them fix it for you at no charge? It was done earlier this year, right??

I do have 12,000 km on it since the exhaust install, so I don't blame Chris for the header gasket leak... Everything he made is still perfect!!

I stopped at the dealership today to drop off some gifts for my mechanic!! He had one side almost finished!! He pulled the k member to make it easier so they will have to do an alignment again too... Should be ready to pick up tomorrow!! I can't believe kook would even send out the gaskets that was on it... Felt, with a thin layer of steel...

Dropping the K-member is the way it should be one on these cars so that's a good sign. Also a good time to change the motor mounts if you have the need:)

Iceman,
Do you have any suggestions on stronger motor mounts? Most of the ones I have found lower the motor, but I would like to keep the motor at the stock height. My headers are going in this fall and I need to find some motor mounts.
Thanks for your help

Mine were machined down to lower the engine a bit. I rung the American Racing long tubes and they fit up nice and tight so it's a non issue - maybe .5 inch or so.
Thant being said I think if you buy them with out machining them down they are the stock height (I think). The brand I have is: prothane - http://www.prothane.com/

Thanks. Prothane was what I was looking at, just can't find the correct motor mounts based on year, model application. I'll keep searching.

Yes, I don't have cats on the car so it has to be the muffler... It is exactly how you described it Dan, I would imagine it just has to be cut open, restuffed and welded back shut...

When you said ceramic, I thought you were talking about the cats.
I've wondered if part of one of my cats broke up a bit at one point. (most likely at Daytona when it spit out one of my O2 sensors)
Don't know if that is even possible.
With all the bad tunes from Jon Lund I've had in my car anything is possible.
Wish I never put his tunes in my car knowing I would be tracking it. :nonono:

Nice!! ...those just look awesome! ...straight-thru ...like old-style glass packs ;-) I'm struggling a bit with this: seems there'd be no point in packing it loosely -- tho it may be. ...and I would not think it can get hot enough to melt a ceramic. Will be interesting to see what he finds when it's opened ...hope it's a simple fix.

Dog, that sounds absolutely killer with headphones!!
I first listened just on the computer speakers and the one on the right just sounded deeper. Then I listened with headphones and the one one the left has lots more crispness -- less attenuation of the highs -- like it would 'brap' like crazy when you wound it out ...makes sense that would be from less/missing/degraded accoustic packing, but why it would do that in such a short time seems a bit mysterious. When's your buddy going to open it?

Oh yeah, it gets really really loud when you step on it, total heatscore... I am waiting to find out when he can fix it... Soon I hope... It is a three hour drive to his place too...
Ok, I got out my mirror and flashlight... There is packing missing for sure... I can see the cannister walls in some places... No idea what the scoop is, stuff happens, but I am not very happy about it... The one note in the exhaust that I don't like is really amplified now thru the one muffler... I haven't even driven it since I get it back from getting the header gaskets replaced... At least that ticking is gone! Lol...

Chris is a great guy, I know he will take care of me!! Turns out that ceramic stuffing is not recommended for supercharged cars as it can blow out over time, so he is going to do a stainless packing wrap around the Perf tube, then the ceramic stuffing...
The drive is ok too because I have relatives there, so I always get a visit in!! The F150 could use a good higway trip to blow the carbon out!!

Change of plans!! LOL... Chris is going to fill the cans with old school steel stuffing, it will add about a pound to each muffler, so they will be about 9 pounds!! He will cut the cans at the back, sand them down smooth, refill them, and then weld them shut... So the tips will be about an 1/8th closer to the car, I like that idea...
This beast is getting a new exhaust system,
