I eventually want to get a roll bar in the vert and after a lot of checking around I found a guy through my Tuner!!

He did this custom one in a local mustang,

Nice welds,

I have done several local cars, including some that are certified by NHRA for 8.50 at 150mph!!!!

I STILL like the removable version that flyboy has. That's the only version I would even consider. I have to still have full access to the rear for the kiddies.

+1 Joe. The price wasn't even that outrageous it's just finding someone within 500 miles who can do it right. OCD I bet this guy could do something like that, you should see if he'll check out flyboy's thread on TS and see if would be willing to do the bolt-in.

I am ok with it being welded in, with removable door bars... I don't have any kids to throw back there!! Since it's a vert, the babes can just crawl over it... Heh...

I want one that will not be NHRA cert. but will be welded in and be below the seat and not get in the way of my foot up front. Comfort first and safety 2nd :) I need to be able to put my seat way back so the bar will have a bend for behind the seats to allow both to be back if I have a tall passenger. I would like that cross bar to be removable (which will likely kill NHRA certs but where I drive they won't ever look at that as the let me run now with nothing). I would want it powder coated or even painted flat black (easier to touch up paint). but I am a ways off on it now. Those are nice welds though for sure.

Here's the PiperMotorsports slideshow that has my bar - and many other examples. Iceman - you'll notice the Red Stripe 500 - the guy and his son are both like 6'4" and 250. look how they did that one...

Yes - tho mine was the first. I don't think he follows the contours of the door as much now. Exceptional work - side bar doesn't touch a thing anywhere. And all the bolts line up perfectly everytime.

This is still on my "To Do" list...

You won't believe the difference in body stiffness. The 4-pt was a great improvement - the 6-pt. finished it off. It drives like a different car with it in. Watch those videos of me throwing the car around. The rollbar makes for a solid flat frame - no flex at all.

Maybe I should leave it in for Orfstock?

John - you are too kind - were closer the first time....

Should note that John gets the credit for working through this set up and Piper does great work, and will adapt if needed, first class shop.

Really does stiffen up the chassis too - when I had mine down at VIR last year, my instructor said the only reason he could tell he was not in a coupe was all the fresh air - hes driven quite a few GT500 coupes

That's nice - I am 6'5" and bounce through out the yr from 265 - 305. I am 295 right now and need the ability to recline for comfort....this is the original reason I got a vert - more head room (with the top up). I like this design but am still likely a ways off before I can pump too much $ into the car again.....gotta fix a roof and some other stuff first :)

I think it will really help stiffen up the vert a bit too!! I think I would get it powdercoated black instead of clearcoated, although it does look good in person...

He said he usually does them as winter projects because guys don't want to give up a car for two weeks in the summer, but I would sooner do that than trailer it around in the winter... He is 200 miles away!!

Not really the type to use for the track IMO.

Yeah, just for someone who basically wants 'the look' of a roll bar and something that has some function.

That is awesome that your guy can weld any of those materials and make you something really strong yet not too heavy. I think it's the Chrome Moly that is super strong yet lighter weight than the normal steel roll cage.

Mild Steel, Chromium Molybdenum Alloys (4130,4140,4340) - Good strength, but you'll need to watch for corrosion.

Stainless (304,316,321,409) - 300 Series Stainless is not much stronger than a good aluminum & it's heavier

Titanium (CP, 3al-2.5v, 6al-4v) - Good strength no corrosion issues, expensive

Inconel - Good & heavy

Monel - Good & heavier

Aluminum - No corrosion issues unless in direct constact with unpainted steel. Decent & light, 6000 series can be as strong as some stainlesses. Not sure if they can weld 7000 or 5000 series aluminum

Magnesium - Strong & light & expensive

Zirconium - What, to cheap to buy diamonds?

Niobium - Expensive & not sure about the strength or weldability, but they can withstand 2000 degrees F. Oh wait, you have a red car so you'll never get fast enough to heat them up that much.

Titanium-Niobium Alloys - Probably costs a lot

I think VERTS look the best without any roll bars or the like.

IMO, they detract from the fluid lines of a convertible car when the top is down. :ninja:

That said, if one is going to track or drag the car a quality professionally installed roll bar makes complete sense.

Yesterday I went on a road trip to meet the welder Chris... 600 km round trip, with the top down!! The Shelby ran great and the road force balance I got, cleared up all the wheel vibration... Chris's shop is attached to his house so my car should be pretty safe there...

We went over how he was going to do the install, I said I wanted it to look like the roll bar came with the car, not just dropped in... He will do it in Chrome Moly, 6 pt, removable door bars, harness bar with camera mount!! Can't do powder coating as it will be fitted and Tig welded right to the car, one bend at a time!!

Chris suggested to paint it red and stripe it to match the car but I think it will stand out to much, I want it to blend in as much as a roll bar in a vert can!! I think I will go black and still throw some flat black stripes on it... He really liked the fender stripes and had not seen them before, he said it would look cool with a set of red ones wrapped around the door bars to carry the theme...

I will have to lose the dead pedal... No biggie... I will also have to trim the rear side panels and maybe the front kick panels myself for reinstall, thats cool... Nothing else will be affected he said...

He was showing me some of the projects he was working on, couple ricer race cars, helicopter exhaust, and a custom ricer header... I asked if he has ever made a set of custom headers for one of our cars... "Not yet, but I would like to"...

So anyway, this winter it will be going back for full exhaust!! Stainless headers and 3" aluminum pipes with aluminum mufflers with custom milled tips!! He even makes the mufflers... I have heard his system on a couple cars and it sounds phenomenal!!

It was a good trip, he is a really cool down to earth guy who sure knows his stuff!! He also knows a lot of the same car people I know...

I see the door beams can be removed, but can the rear cross beam be removed for rear passengers (or do you care)?

My kids like the back seat too much to ever have a roll bar. Plus, I don't think Momma G would ever let me race the car. Once we build the next house, I may get a track turd like TG did. Something that I wouldn't get too upset if I cracked it up.

What color are you painting it? You might have said already... but I don't read back. :hide:

I see the door beams can be removed, but can the rear cross beam be removed for rear passengers (or do you care)?

Cross beam is solid... I am ok with having no back seat... I can put two girls in the front and I am not greedy... I was thinking about doing a rear seat delete and putting a kick azz stereo back there...

The shaker 1000 just doesn't cut it with the top down at highway speeds... Trunk sub is basically useless dead weight in a vert...

Why DOG? Are you going to track and drag this car a lot?

May I suggest powder-coating the roll bar or anodizing it, both are more durable than paint and full rolls bars always get nicked and hit getting in and out.

I suggest Rustoleum crinkle paint. You can't repair chipped powder coat or scarred anodized. Just keep a can of Rustoleum around. Looks fine - and matches our plastic trim. Piper uses it for all their bars and cages.

Yes, when the warranty expires I plan on doing some quarter mile, drifting, and wot top speed runs to see how fast it will go...

Of course I haven't had it up to 160 already with the top down already...

I asked about anodizing the roll bar but it is going to be fabricated and Tig welded from base up, right in the car... Every piece totally custom bent... So it has to be painted in the car... I could always wrap it with something...

I talked to Chris tonight and I am going to drop my car off Oct 9 instead of this week... Then he is going to do the roll bar and exhaust at the same time and also fab me up some tie downs for the dyno and any trailering... Will take about 4 weeks but I would sooner get it done now than the middle of winter...

The roll bar will be painted with rustolem spray bombs for easy touch up... He liked the fender stripes and thought it would look cool to wrap some around the door bars... I agree!! I asuggested we wrap the roll bar with stripes too!! Flat black of course, and I still have enough material from Farmdog to do it!! I would do red stripes but I would like it to be more subtle that stand out, that's my gig..

For exhaust it will be stainless headers with a 2" to 1 7/8" taper or something like that... Then stainless 3" pipe to aluminum mufflers and cnc'd tips with "SVT" cutout on the top and GT500 on the bottom... I could have went 3" aluminum pipe all the way but stainless will be way more durable...

Not very many clamps on this system,

He will also try and design the headers so there will be easy access to the tranny, if need be... His shop is 20 min away from my tuners... They have been good friends for years, so i really trust Chris too... His shop is also attached to his house so my car is pretty safe there...

Looks like great workmanship Stacy. One suggestion though is I would have him install some flanged type disconnects so you could remove the exhaust easily without having to remove the whole thing if you need to work on something like the transmission, driveshaft etc...( or replace a bad Cat or muffler).
That is one thing I hate about my system (stainless works) it is dfficult to dissemble and remove.

The louder the better!! Lol, it shouldn't be too bad.... No worse than an old big block with headers and mufflers... Right??

It will go directly to the tuner after... My tuner "Matt" and welder"Chris" are great friends that have known each other for years... Both are really great guys, straight up, no smoke and mirrors... Matt is VK's tuner too...

Sunday I drop the car off and my cousin is giving me a ride back to Edmonton, so that's cool!!

A couple of things may have to be addressed in the tune...

(1) Fast Light-Off HEGO heater Duty-Cycle function. If the vehicle has long tube headers you may find that you will have to extend the time and duty cycle in order to speed up the EGO tip warm up for accurate STFT. Also, you may note that if replacement rear O2's are used that they often take more time to heat up and this will help resolve the problem.

(2)Transport delay in seconds during the upstream HEGO's. (this may not be necessary if #1 is done)

Trip went good, was a great morning so I had the top down!! In Oct!! Woot!!

We went over a few details on how the roll bar and exhaust would go... I asked him to try and make the headers so they don't have to be removed for eventual clutch replacement... The exhaust tips are going to be anodized black to blend in more with the bottom trim... The botttom of the tips will still have "GT500" cut out, but "SVT" that I am getting on the top will be etched in after anodizing so it will stand out...

Now, the waiting begins.... He said he will take lots of pics of the progress...

Yeah, I know that Dog, just wondering how he determines what is best for each engine, (Flow, backpressure etc.) without making a bunch of designs and dynoing each set up to see which is best for each engine and tune.

The mufflers Chris did for my Fox made the car 10 dBA quieter at idle and cost no power versus the Flowmaster 50 series setup I had before. The exhaust from the headers back to the dumps was configured the same and used the same tubing size (3.5" with X-Pipe), but the new aluminum setup weighed 31 pounds less (old system 48#, new system 17#). In practice these aluminum systems seem very durable on street cars and of course they will NEVER rust. The only place we have seen any problems is with a serious turbo road race car (a Nissan Silvia) where the downpipe seemed to be getting too hot for the material to really stand up.

One of our close friends here is a PhD Mechanical Engineer (Stanford) so if some engineering expertise is required it is pretty readily available.

By the way, while Chris welds all these exotics like Zirconium, you would obviously never build a roll bar out of it. Chromoly Steel is usually your best choice for strength and weight, and I am sure that is what onecrazydog is getting! If you need your nuclear fuel rods welded up though, Chris is certified for that too ...

-Matthew

Yup, we are going with Chromoly Steel for the roll bar!! We decided to do stainless steel x-pipe too instead of aluminum... When I win the lottery, we wll do a complete Titanium exhaust!!

Yeah, I know that Dog, just wondering how he determines what is best for each engine, (Flow, backpressure etc.) without making a bunch of designs and dynoing each set up to see which is best for each engine and tune.

Exhaust dissipation isn't rocket science there is SOME science and engineering involved.

Got a reply JT!!

"My approach is simple: I try to design a system that flows an appropriate amount for the application as a minimum. Then, I take into account the customer's desire for overall noise reduction, and modify only the mufflers to achieve this goal.
As they are a straight-through design, and very near the end of the system, making them longer or larger in OD would have a very small effect on the overall flow of the system, and a rather dramatic effect on their ability to absorb noise.
Unlike a baffled muffler, the flow characteristics of my own design are quite good. I have discussed the design at length with our engineer friend, and he is confident in their ability to both flow and reduce noise. So much so in fact, that he has chosen me to fabricate a very special exhaust system for his 09 M3 in the future using that very design.

As for the length of time needed to do these 3 elements on Stacey's car, it is because I am meticulous, have a loving family, and a full-time job as a welding instructor at one of Canada's premier Polytechnics. I do what I can when I can, and quality is the top priority. Time and cost
are simply by-products of the quality desired."

Yup, we are going with Chromoly Steel for the roll bar!! We decided to do stainless steel x-pipe too instead of aluminum... When I win the lottery, we wll do a complete Titanium exhaust!!

Sounds like it's going to be great Stace!

Ti is the ultimate Exhaust material IMO but your right, the cost for a custom car app (GT500) would be prohibitive. The TiForce and Aakrapovic exhaust Ti exhausts I have used on my bikes were almost 2K for Headers, connecting pipe and can. The real benefit is the strength of the pipe (unlike Aluminum) and the weight savings, only 8 to 9 pounds for the entire system on a SUPERBIKE.

http://www.hardracing.com/images/pipepieces_small.jpg

http://www.fourwheelperformance.com/aprilia/aprilia_akro01.jpg

I think Akrapovic make some Ti apps for some Porsches, BMWs and some exotics and you can spend $10K to 14K on some of their car Ti Exhaust apps. :yikes:

Shell makes the Motomaster Formula one oil... I will pass and stick with Mobil One, I wish Can Tire would carry it in 5-50...

I picked up my stock exhaust this weekend... Chris also gave me a used set of Corsa axlebacks to sell... On the way home I stopped in Red Deer because Jeff (zeefree) wanted to try my KR axlebacks with his high flow cats... I left the corsas with him too, then he can try them both out and I will sell him which ever ones he likes... Those Corsa's are heavy!! Wow!! I gave him my stock mid pipes as he needed one and he said his friend would buy my old x pipe but I just gave that to him too, those parts will never go back on my car so why keep them...

Had a good chat with Chris, and gave him some tickets to see the Calgary Flames in the Saddledome!!

The interior is all out and he was starting on the roll bar... When you think about it, there is a lot of labour involved... The interior has to come out then go back in after fabrication, the complete exhaust has to come out and things like strut bar & cai also have to be removed for access and reinstalled...

Oh yeah, I was checking out my new mufflers and :wow2: are they ever light!! WOOT!! It is going to sound sweet but scary!!

Jeff is young and just bought a house so I just gave him the Corsas... My cruisin bud wants my axlebacks but I should charge him for them... I already gave him my old steeda upper and lower control arms and he was the first one to get a shift handle...

My mod budget is already curtailed due to marriage. If I was single a single man, the Darkmobile would be sporting a built aluminum block motor with a ginormous blower and the Raptor would already have stripes painted on it

:doh2:

Throw three kids into that mix and see how the MOD budget fairs...

I know better than that. Step kids that don't pay rent in your houses are bad enough. :yellowcard3:

The Kooks are shorter than most (and amazingly make a couple more HP) but that might give him some flexibility in mating them up -- dunno -- just mentioning in case that turns out to matter.

Dan won... Kooks it is... Actually those were the only ones that they could get shipped out today... $855, so I told them to order them... Less hassle for me... This way Chris can finish the exhaust off, it can go to Matt's and get tuned then it will be finished and can come home and prepped for Shelbyfest...

I stayed with the stock mounts. That's the only difference I believe.

Nice! Looks like he 'stiches' around the joints then goes back to fill in the gaps -- minimizes distortion, I'd bet ...just like tac-and-fill on body panels?

It is all fit right from the measurements of the car!! It will be perfect, I am not worried about that at all... I just had a little vent on the timing thing but it's not like I can drive it anyway... It's all good... Chris is a really great guy and is putting 110% into the job he doing... I know that if he hadn't gotten hurt, my car would have been done months ago... Then the guy who was providing the flanges screwed up, but he did come back with a decent price on the kooks and had them on the way the same day... :fingerscrossed:!! Chris will fab the pipes up to them perfectly and she will be sweet...

I canceled the roll bar (and of course I am second guessing that to, lol) because I came to the conclusion that I won't be running the car to the point where one is legally needed, and I always have worried it might clash with the flow of the car with the top down... Since it hadn't been started, I put the halt on it... I thought about maybe just doing one loop, but dunno... Lightbars look good but they are cosmetic only...

That's kinda what I was thinking!! Revisit it later maybe, or do it on another project... Maybe get the vette all safety'd up for racing, that's all it needs!! I wanted to explain my reasoning mainly, I didn't want anyone to think I did it just because I was all mad... I am not that big of a whiner...

Good choice on the Kooks. I also had ARs on at one point - and also had the steering shaft rub issue. Even moving the engine to the far right and changing the mounts didn't help. The Kooks fit much better. Only issue - way loud with KRs or Corsas on - tho some may look for that...

I asked and, he welds kitty-corner at the beginning to avoid breaking any of the tiny autogenous (no filler) tacks, then he has at it, bouncing around a little to avoid
any hot spots that may cause movement!!

Here's some of the drivers side over axle piece... Headers should be here, I will call him tomorrow...

Shame all these dime rolls will be hidden under the car!!
