So this is my Daily Driver, work truck, I am trying to black everything out and the only thing left is the rims. I am in the process of having a baby and buying a house, so money is tight right now. I don't have the $1,000 to spare to have them powder coated, so here is my question.. Can i scratch pad and tape the tires off and just use high heat spray paint? Does anybody know anything about this? Please give me pros and cons Eventually I will have them sand blasted back to chrome and then done properly but that will be a few months and I want the all black look now. Any advice will greatly help. I like these rims so I dont want to change them to others I just want them black.

Another option is what I had done with the stock rims, which is painting them with a tinted clearcoat. Cheaper than powdercoating.

Check it out.

I didn't realize that was the route you went. You can't tell that's what you did when you see them in person.

I needed an intermediate step before I could get new wheels. This was the best course of action we could come up with. My new wheels will be powdercoated

Call Auto Arts in Raleigh and ask them about what it would cost to do your wheels like mine. If you mention the wheels on the flat black shelby they will know what you are talking about

I am by no means a painting expert. It looks like those wheels are polished aluminum correct? I think you you would need to strip all the polish off then I would use a 'self etching primer' first. Then a base coat clear coat automotive paint like PPG or Dupont. Your local automotive paint store should be able to steer you in the right direction....

That works well on turn signal lenses, too.

Just sayin'....

No.

I haven't done it. Yet...

Have seen it, though. The nice thing is you can polish and wax them like your paint. Makes them stand out nicely.

I had a 89 Saleen and the webbed style wheels won't stay clean. So, I took alot time, removed the wheels from the car, and taped up the rim with blue painters tape, being sure to tape all the area from overspray. Then I used newspaper and completely covered the tires. I then got Automotive Spray paint. Not the cheap .99 cents can, but about $8 per can. I lightly scuff them, then continue to spray light coats over and over (away from the
car of course!). Then after about 3 full coats (10 minutes in between each), I sprayed down a clear coat. Waited till the next day, and removed all the tape and paint. They were perfect. It takes time and patience but
you can do it, and then touch them up once a year or as needed. I'll look for some pics to post before and after.

I must be missing something. There's a powdercoating place here in Dallas that had quoted me roughly $80/wheel for powdercoating???? Is there such thing as differing quality in powdercoating materials? I'm confused.

02saleen

the place by us is $250 a rim
