Anybody have one of these? Opinions? Pics? I kind of like the look better than the twin tanks... Covers the whole fan shroud...

Since it's basically all one piece of aluminum it will transfer heat from one tank to the other very quickly.

Although it may look nice I'm not a fan of that kind of setup because of the under-hood heat soak with 'black' aluminum. I much perfer the matching twin plastic OEM type tanks. Triple the fluid capacity without any heat soak.

From looking closely at the pic of the "Tank" its looks like the tanks are only connected by the common top piece bridging the two tanks together. Wouldn't this greatly reduce heat soak between the two tanks?

I like the look myself and hope Dog will post up his thought if he does make the purchase.

Go for it Stacey

Maybe not much between the two tanks but you still have the heat soak of all that blackened aluminum. That is the issue I have with any aluminum tank in the engine compartment. If you ever worked in a hot engine compartment that has one you'd know what I mean. The heat difference between the plastic tanks and the aluminum ones is dramatic.

Totally agree, eventhough I like the Tank and I'm using both Moroso's set up tanks, plastic ones are the best for efficiency!!

Yes, the alum tanks get do get pretty hot... But does't that mean it is dissipating heat out of the coolant? Wouldn't the coolant be hotter than the engine bay while moving?

Personally I think the temp differences wouldn't be that great of a concern unless you are racing the car and looking to get all you can out of your systems, but you are looking for a reason. Is the reason more efficientcy or looks?

Looks... You can easily add ice to the intercooler part when racing... I haven't had an issue with heat soak since installing the C&R H/E... I think that mod was the best bang for the buck...

It also means it is conducting heat from the engine bay i.e. the headers etc. Removing heat is the job of the radiator and the heat exchanger not the reservoir tanks. You asked my opinion so from a performance point of view I offered it. If looks are most important to you then by all means go for it that set up does look real nice for sure.

Definitely not as red as they use to be.

Red and black fade the quickest usually of any color, but I thought being anodized it wouldn't be a problem.

When I washed the motor last fall just before parking it, soap or degreaser or a combo of both stained some anodized and polished parts, and also the valve covers... Didn't affect any painted or powdercoated areas or some plastics... Strange...

Valve covers, the shiny spots are where I tried different cleaning stuff... It does come off them with some scrubbing...

http://www.onecrazydog.com/pictures/albums/Radiator_Leakage/P1030671.JPG

This spot I cleaned and then went over with showcar dressing... Came out good...

http://www.onecrazydog.com/pictures/albums/Radiator_Leakage/P1030674.JPG

Some oil in the TVS, you can see the soap haze on the fuel rails... The haze comes off but there is spotting etched right into the anodization... They will have to be redone, I am getting satin ones anyway...

http://www.onecrazydog.com/pictures/albums/Radiator_Leakage/P1030672.JPG

My 123 maf looked the same in spots but it all polished out with neverdull... "Whew"...

http://www.onecrazydog.com/pictures/albums/Radiator_Leakage/P1030682.JPG

TB will polish out with some elbow grease too, I did a test area...

http://www.onecrazydog.com/pictures/albums/Radiator_Leakage/P1030691.JPG

Dunno how the back would get so oily in here, must be from PVC, but the drivers side JLT tank is bone dry... What do I use to clean the TB blades with?

http://www.onecrazydog.com/pictures/albums/Radiator_Leakage/P1030685.JPG

Ruh roh, I just took the thing off the car and the hose was cracked over half way through, came right off in my hand... Not sure how long it was like that for... I am switching to satin ones, I am sure that one can be fixed...

Looks... You can easily add ice to the intercooler part when racing... I haven't had an issue with heat soak since installing the C&R H/E... I think that mod was the best bang for the buck...Ice won't make much of a difference. That water gets so hot the ice would be melted before you got your racing helmet on. I agree with the plastic tank comments. Maybe someday someone will invent a plastic one that has a metal outer lining for better looks or something....or a plastic that looks like metal.

I had the Conceptual ? One before Jay's was available.

I had told Jay for about 7 months he had to produce this item, but at the time he was swamped w new 2007 GT500 tunes that he just couldn't get it fabricated. Really.

By the time he came out w it I already had the other one and his prototype was having problems w blowby. He finally had some mesh piece made up for it and problem solved. I enjoyed being part of the process.

So OCD can thank me for his JLT catch can. :shades:

Actually, word is they are not sure if they are going to make them anymore... So I made the decision easier by canceling the order... If they do decide to make more I would probably still get one...

It wasn't damaged, it was defective... Sucks that it sat in the box for the first four months of the warranty... Lol...

Anyway... Clamps...

I am skeptical of those heat shrink ones... Maybe I will try them on the vette...

The factory auto tension ones are ugly and I think they are supposed to be replaced after using..??

I found some wide T bolt clamps that fit the rad hoses and stainless steel worm ones for the rest... Are the T bolts good or overkill? Should I just use old school worm clamps everywhere? I went to the dealership and they don't sell the constant tension ones that come on the car...

Just to expand on the whole Stabil thing ...because it is widely misunderstood and might not do what you think...

Red Stabil is optimized to just prevent gum/varnishes from forming when gas is stored for up to 6 months. However, if E10 gas separates, nothing can chemicaly reintegrate the water that falls out of solution and that will sink to the bottom of the tank and will be immediately sucked-up by the pump. The good news is that if an engine starts, separation has not occured, tho octane might have degraded. The bad news is that if it did separate and you attempt to start the engine, extensive damage to fuel system components (especially injectors and pumps) can quickly result. The Marine (blue) Stabil is optimized to help mitigate water separation of Ethanol-blend gasolines by chemically absorbing some amount of water. It also contains the gum/varnish stabilizers of red Stabil (just more) and also adds moisture corrosion prevention. There's also a yellow Ethanol Stabil with gum/varnish fighters and mositure corrosion fighters but not clear to me how much water, if any, it can actually 'absorb.' My sense is that it's between red (regular) and blue (Marine) Stabil ...if you presenetly use red stabil as your small engine gas treatment and your gas has ethanol (virtually everywhere now), the yellow Stabil should be your new default (not red).

Blue (Marine) stabil is probably the best for long term/winter storage of e-blends in a modern sealed automotive gas tank since it includes gum/varnish stabilizers, moisture damage prevention *and* enhanced water absorbtion. However, even blue/Marine stabil cannot prevent poorly stored E-blend gas from separating because gas exposed to air can absorb way more water than even blue (Marine) Stabil can hold in suspension.

Regardless of stabilizer additive, gas will degrade in octane (Stabil does not address octane loss) when it sits however the rate of octane degredation can vary widely. The bad news is that in an unsealed container with exposure to atmoshperic air or vent-breathing, octane can degrade rapidly -- up to about 1%/week which would render 93 pump gas to 75 octane in 5 months. Clearly this can have dire consequences if a car without knock-sensors ('07-'10 GT500) is run hard on degraged octane fuel. On the bright side, in a totally sealed container with little or no air circulation/contact it might only lose a 2-3 points in the same 5 months. The good news is that modern emissions standards require very tight venting standards (vapor purge test is performed every run cycle), so that if your car is put away for winter with a full tank (with or without Stabil, but preferably with) it will likely only lose a few points.

After long storage (with or without Stabil) my suggestion would be to drive the first tank easy (no WOT without knock sensors!) and then refill with 93 (and no WOT for the first 5 miles to purge lines/rails). Alternatively, you could run it for 50 miles and top off with a few gallons of 100+ octane aviation gas if available locally (some gas stations even sell 100 octane in some areas). Alternatively, you could also add some Torco, but it does tend to coat plugs, etc. Paint thinner (Toluene) can also be added and is considered an excellent octane booster when available economically from a paint-supply house (you can do some searches for octane-targeting mixing recommendations (http://www.elektro.com/~audi/toluene/)if interested).

Anyhow, to summarize, just wanted to separate several different considerations as I understand them:
=> Standard (red) Stabil ...gum/varnish prevention intended for non E-blend gas for up to 6 months
=> Ethanol (yellow) Stabil ...same as red for gum/varnish, helps prevent moisture corrosion moisture (not separation!)
=> Marine (blue) Stabil ...same as yellow for gum/varnish and moisture corrosion prevention but also adds chemical water absorbers (but can't compensate for poor storage) and is used religiously in marine applications. THIS IS LIKELY THE BEST CHOICE FOR RELIABLY OVER-WINTERING SEALED-TANK E-BLEND FUELS.
=> NONE of the Stabil products do anything to boost/preserve octane per se
=> Storage container is all-important -- especially for E-blends. Fotunately, newer car tanks are quite good in this regard
=> Separated gas (water separation from atmospheric moisture or ethanol disolution) *cannot* be recoverd/restored and must be purged ...if starting was attempted and failed, likelihood of damage is high (e.g. injectors, pumps).

This is a confusing topic but the above sums up my understanding.

Thanks Danny. Rep points for you.

Never would have thought that MARINE Stabil would/should be used in a vehicle, but I guess it make sense and is likely just a marketing ploy from Stabil - not a "only use in marine applications" type thing.

Thanks, Joe :tiphat2: ...the yellow is probably fine for every day use with E-gas (tho not necessary for vehicles driven regularly) but for over-wintering E-gas the Marine seems to have a distinct advantage. Besides, lots of non-diesel Marine applications are now OBD/FI V8s ...in cigarette/cigar boats, etc.

This E 10 stuff seems to be a pita... Why exactly are we using it to screw up our once reliable gas??

Does the fuel pump come on when the key is in the on position without the car running? If so, could the tank be drained that way? Old school siphon hose down the tank won't empty it as there is a left and right side in the tank...

From what I read there is kind of easy access to the top of the tank with the rear seat bottom out... http://iihs.net/fsm/?dir=315&viewfile=Fuel Tank Draining.pdf

Stacey, I know I kinda started this whole conversation. :sorry:

I was trying to say in a nice way to dump your fuel tank. :hiding:

If my tank was sitting for 6 month w ethanol I would dump it before even turning the key and filling up the lines with it....really.

I'm glad Dan shed more light on it.

Especially on a Supercharged motor that requires correct octane.

I think you would be totally pissed off w a hole in top of one of your pistons. :nonono:

I don't know of an easy way of draining a tank. I've always just dropped the tank and dumped it to be sure...pita if it is half full. :nonono:

When the key is turned on...the system "initializes" meaning I think it just runs the pump for a couple seconds to make sure the fuel rails have pressure....

I haven't dropped the tank on a new style Mustang.

I have in a few other vehicles and it is a pain.

If this helps at all... I always sweat about doing some big job on a car or truck.....1/2 way through the job I wish i did it sooner because it wasn't so hard to do after all.

If i had a lift and the right jacks I can do anything to my car I wanted.

Be brave, go for t!

It does make sense to purge the system since I am swapping the fuel rails out right now anyway, I will put a new fuel filter in too... I am going to try the fomoco draining procedure first though before dropping the tank... Just need some long hose and a suction pump...
