...662bHP would probably pull about 560-565 at the wheels

...and a no-heat-soak, bullet-proof set-up ...gotta love competition!!

(oh, forgot, that had noting to do with it :giggle:)

...wonder for how long the ZL1 will stay at 580bHP :shades: ...there will certainly be a big aftermarket for the 2.3 TVS on the 6.2.

Its kinda funny how chevy has a 6.2 and it makes 580hp, Ford used a 5.8 which is a board out 5.4 the 5.8 was suppose to be the original plan for the 11. Ford just wanted to put chevy back in its place and show whos boss lol.

http://www.autoblog.com/2012/04/26/2013-ford-shelby-gt500-certified-at-662-hp-and-630-pound-feet/

Official Ford Press Release

At 662 HP, 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 Certified As World's Most Powerful V8! Segment-Leading Fuel Efficiency

· The 5.8-liter supercharged V8 in the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 is SAE certified at 662 horsepower and 631 lb.-ft. of torque

· The world's most powerful production V8 is backed up by chassis, aerodynamic and braking performance that makes the GT500 an outstanding all-around sports car

· Even with 112 horsepower more than the 2012 GT500, fuel economy is increased by 1 mpg both city and highway, 5 mpg better than Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

The all-new supercharged 5.8-liter powerplant in the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 has been officially SAE-certified as the most powerful series production V8 in the world with peak output of 662 horsepower and 631 lb.-ft. of torque. That's more power and torque than low volume sports cars costing tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars more than the GT500, which is the most fuel-efficient vehicle in its segment. In fact the 2013 GT500 is the most fuel-efficient car with over 550 horsepower in any segment available in America.

Unlike high-strung engines found in much more expensive exotic supercars, the GT500 engine generates its massive thrust throughout its operating range with 395 lb.-ft. of torque available just off idle at 1,000 rpm. More than 90 percent of the peak torque is available from 2,200 to 5,800 rpm so that no matter when you squeeze the go pedal, the GT500 will just get up and run.

The combination of the new TVS 2.3-liter supercharger, twin overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder ensures this stallion can breathe all the way to 7,000 rpm with the peak power production coming at 6,500 rpm and holding fairly steady right to the rev limit.

"Our goal is to create outstanding all-around performance cars, not just stoplight-to-stoplight sprinters," said Jamal Hameedi, SVT chief engineer. "We've backed up this amazing powerplant with a more refined chassis tuning that helps keep the rubber on the pavement without punishing the driver's spine and six-pot Brembo brakes that dissipate speed with ease stop after stop."

The broad, flat torque curve of the GT500 engine makes it tractable and easy to drive whether trolling along in traffic or powering out of a turn on a twisting country road. With more than enough grunt to push the coupe to 200 mph and beyond, the chassis has been tuned to absorb the road imperfections that can cause instability at high speeds. The revised front fascia and splitter help manage the flow of air around and under the GT500 so that it offers 33 percent more effective aero loading at 160 mph compared to the 2011 model and feels more firmly planted.

"The engineers at Ford SVT focused on the fundamentals first with solid mechanical grip and strong brakes," added Hameedi. "On top of that platform they added advanced driver-adjustable electronic assist features including launch control, Bilstein adjustable damping, AdvanceTrac stability control and electric power-assisted steering."

Even with the most powerful production V8 in the world, the 2013 Shelby GT500 improves on the fuel efficiency of the 2012 model with an EPA-estimated 15 mpg city, 24 mpg highway and 18 mpg combined with no gas guzzler tax.

That's 5 mpg better on the highway than the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 even with an extra 82 horsepower and 75 lb.-ft. being generated under the hood. With the 2013 GT500 world-class performance no longer has to mean a world-class thirst for fuel.

The 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 will be built at AutoAlliance International Plant in Flat Rock, Mich.

The Truth About Cars
2013 Shelby GT500; 662 Horsepower, 200 MPH. WHY???
By Jack Baruth on April 26, 2012

http://images.thetruthaboutcars.com/2012/04/2013shelby-550x309.jpg

"Big news today; the Ford Shelby GT500 apparently packs 662 horsepower in addition to its 200 mph top speed. The big question now is “why?”

The opening paragraph was written by our cherished Editor, Derek Kreindler. I’m here to answer the question posed within. In fact, I will provide multiple answers.

Let’s start with bragging rights. Chevrolet has been playing the numbers card in the ponycar wars since the dawn of time, often to obscure the fact that Ford had a better idea at the time. Remember how easily the five-liter Fox Mustang danced around the ‘Vette-engined IROC-Z? What about the turbocharged SVO, which couldn’t hang with the Tuned Port Z28 in a straight line or even around a skidpad but easily dusted the third-gen F-body on real roads? More recently, the LS3-engined Camaro SS has had the power edge on the retro-Mustang but hasn’t managed to win the hearts and minds of the journos or the track-rat crowd.

Ford knows there’s a group of people out there who want the biggest number, and instead of trying to do it with their V-6 or normally-aspirated V-8 cars, they’re bringing it at the top end. The new Shelby doesn’t just *****-slap the rare-on-the-ground ZL1: it exceeds the Corvette ZR1′s published number. In the real world, the ZR1 is too light for the Shelby to threaten, but in the real world, the owners of these cars are mostly sixty-year-old drywall contractors. Ford’s got the bragging rights.

Next up, the turbo Hayabusa issue. Human beings adjust to acceleration. It’s a fact. The regional-jet-set barely notices the monstrous push of a full-throttle runway takeoff. Formula 1 drivers complained that the 2.4-liter V-8 cars, which were capable of reaching 200mph on many road course straightaways, felt ‘poky’ because they were used to the V-10 racers. Last, but not least, we have all the people who turbocharge their Suzuki Hayabusas because 9.8-second quarter-miles at 144mph just don’t get it done after a while. The current Shelby is fast as hell, but as I found out last year, you get used to the thrust in short order. Let’s have more of that, then.

Last but not least, there is the sheer exuberance of it. Maybe you haven’t noticed, but resources are getting scarce in this world and the United States no longer sits at the head of the table when it’s time to chew ‘em up. Your children won’t have a chance to buy something like this. It might not be illegal to own one, but it won’t be cheap or easy, either. If you want to experience six hundred and sixty-two horses pulling you down the streets of your hometown like a Apolloian chariot hitched to the sun itself, now’s the time. There won’t be much of a tomorrow. Ladies and gentlemen, I present the 2013 GT500. Raise your glasses, perhaps for the last time."

This has to be one of the best quotes I have heard in ages

Chris, remember 650HP is lot of energy to dissipate when a car is designed to run at it's limits around the Nurbergring all afternoon. Even with a much larger radiator, SC IC/HE/pump, redesigned block and head cooling, piston squirters, etc, the challenge is dissipating that much HP with airflow and doing it aerodynamically and with sufficient downforce so it can run over 200mph ...and not pull timing. Huge amout of CFD modelling went into the '13. Up under the leading edge of the hood and stretching back about 8" in a very specially desigend contour is an air shaper/diffuser resulting from that modelling that, along with the front splitter, hood extractor and other plenum and belly baffling, manage the front plenum airclow and whole front-end airflow balance -- how much goes over, under, around and through (and where it goes through) -- and that just would not be possible with a grille. The '13 is designed to a level of performance no prior factory mustang has been able to achieve -- by a wide margin. It's not just that it has 100-150 HP over earlier S197s, it's that it can use most all of it right out of the box ...all afternoon.

I don't disagree with anything said about the greatness of this car but still seeing the things on the road I am dodging now to avoid a paint chip it would seem there could be some risk for people driving on the road with out a grill. I get why it is that way but for on the street not the track doesn't it seem like this could be a danger or at least a risk more than on the cars with a grill? Look on my radiator now...with a grill...

...possibly a heavy stainless coarse wire-mesh could be added an inch or two in front of the whole IC/AC/Radiator ...set back there it might not impact overall vehicle airflow at all and might still give some protection?
