View Full Version : 180 Degree Thermostat

I know we have had these similar questions before.
Am I hurting myself running a 180 thermostat in my track car?
Still seem like I'm running a little hot.
I opened up my grill area quite a bit a couple days ago to try and help.
Also changed my air filter which was much dirtier than I thought and contributed (I think?) to running IAT's between 140* and 150*, when I use to run between 125* and 135*.
Thoughts on thermostat? Should I move to a 195 ?

I never really understood how thermostats were rated as I thought that 180 deg thermostat meant it would open up and allow flow from the engine through the radiator at 180 deg F. If thats the case, wouldn't moving to a higher thermostat (i.e. 195) increase the IAT's and how hot the engine runs?
Forgive me if that is a stupid question but by now I am guessing most who know me are used to them by now.

I'm thinking for a track car the thermo won't affect your actual stable-running temps since they will likely always be above 180 or 195. The stat just prevents them from dropping below that and helps things warm up a bit quicker. On a production car the stat is essential for correct PCM management since some functions will never complete if the temp doesn't stabilize at 180 or higher, but I don't think it will matter on a track car. 180 should be fine ...jmo.
If the air filter is dirty it will impede flow. FLow = HP. Therefore less intake flow = less heat and centrifugals (unlike fixed-displacement SCs) consume less power (actually spin easier) when restricted, but also make less HP.
I'd check the heat exchanger ...someting is impeding intake heat extraction, I think (vs generating more heat). Possibly the HE needs to be cleaned? Maybe there's quite a bid of road-grime on it? That could also be why it burped... or maybe not (...since that turned out to just be a poltergeist :giggle: :hide:)

The Gt500 burped, not the track car.
The procharger I/C doesn't look very efficient in my opinion, I wonder if they make a better one since mine is probably almost 10 years old.

The GT500 burped? :doh2: :rofl3: I guess we'd need to divine what car you're taking about since you never mentioned it (http://stangsunited.com/showthread.php?6034-Windshield-covered-with-inter-cooler-fluid-at-125&p=232850&viewfull=1#post232850)...
...poltergeists for sure :giggle:

I said I was doing 125 on the street, you can't do that w/ the track turd. :shades:

cause of burp still sounds like poltergiests :giggle:

This thread is about the track car thermostat.
Just ordered a larger intercooler today.
My current I/C says Procharger on it, but I can't find it listed in their specs, it must be very old and outdated.
One I ordered has much more surface area and "should" be a good improvement.

Oh, right! :giggle:
Bill, is your Procharger air-air? ...maybe post some pics of both intercoolers when you get a chance, ok?

Sure thing, hopefully shipping doesn't take too long.

Here's the Procharger I/C that was on the car.

I removed my inner fender well covers, hopefully to let more heat out/ air flow in/out.
Not sure if that is a good idea or not.
I see half the cars at the track w/ them left in and half taken out, not sure what the real facts are about this. Pro's and Con's?

On my initial test run down the street my car made 10.8 lbs of boost.
I have never seen over 10 lbs of boost w/ this car before, so something definitely opened up?

And that was w/ it throwing the P0351 code which I then cleared and hopefully? fixed.

Leaving the inner fenders off may be ok but if you run in the rain like last time. I think it will get wet under the hood

I don't think that will matter much, my concern w rain is that my air filter in under the fender as seen in one of my pics.

Without the inner fender, you could kick road debris up where you don't want it.
