Built in two different eras and in two vastly different configurations, the 1966 Ford GT40 and 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona that will headline Bonhams’ upcoming Quail Lodge sale nevertheless share similar stories of starting out road cars and ending up something else entirely.
Originally built as a production road coupe, the GT40, serial number P/1033, was originally sold to Georges Filipinetti, who had Graber trim it as a luxury car – complete with carpeting, tan leather upholstery, wind-up windows and air conditioning – and paint it silver. Filipinetti then displayed it at the 1966 Geneva Auto Show, but expressed dissatisfaction with it when he finally took delivery of it. A couple of owners and another appearance at the Geneva Auto Show later and it ended up in the hands of fellow Swiss Dominique Martin, who stripped out the Graber trimmings to take it racing. While its racing career proved short and unspectacular, Martin did enter it in the 1969 24 Hours of Le Mans. Damaged in a fire in 1970, it then passed through several hands (including those of Franco Sbarro, leading to a later cloning of P/1033) before Californian Bud Romak had Phil Reilly restore the car in 1983 in Filipinetti’s red and white scheme. Powered by a Ford 302-cu.in. fitted with Gurney-Weslake heads and Weber carburetors, it has since racked up plenty of miles in historic racing.

It would sure be cool to see Ford and Ferrari battle it out at Lemans again but I don't even think Ferrari has been competitive the last couple years? :doh2:
