Just testing to see if I can post here.

For the info of people on the forum I am relocating to Portland Oregon to work onsite at Nike. My wife and I have wanted to get back to the Pacific Northwest for years so this was a great opportunity for us. Looking forward to making new friends in the area!

Hi John.

Have you paid your yearly Membership dues?

If not, that's the issue. Posting in the "Family Forums" is a benefit for paid members.

Then I think the family section should be in the "members only area"... If the public can read a thread, they should be able to post in it imo...

The primary justification of this forum-site is for Club members. We also permit general (view and post) access to the tech threads. We let non-club members view (but not post in) the family forums as a way of also permitting them to sample the camaraderie and fun aspects of the Club's members so that a non-member might better determine if they like what they see and might then decide to join as a Club member. The notion of non-members not being able to see the fun family forums was deemed counterproductive to engendering potential new member interest in the Club. This can certainly be revisited, but that's current thinking and the tradeoffs were considered at length.

On one hand we'd like to let everyone see and participate in everything, but we are prevented from doing that by applicable 501C7 (non-profit social club) corporate restrictions since we are obligated by IRS law to apply club benefits solely to the club's membership who must also be the primary supporters of the club. Also, if we permitted universal access here there may be reduced motivation to pay membership dues. On the other hand we justify limited non-member participation in this forum-site solely within the managed context of the forum site acting as a 'look-see' opportunity for non-members, in the interest of finding additional like-minded individuals potentially interested in becomming members.

It's admittedly a balance we must manage carefully, but that's the thinking behind the current access permissions such that we can both be compliant with applicable laws and also expose what the Club and its members are about to potential new Club members.
