View Full Version : Picking up my wife's ST late this afternoon

It's an ST2, Tangerine Scream, with moonroof and nav. TS/black Recaros. She's trading in her '10 Fusion Sport.

We test drove it on Saturday and were very pleased with it. We have a 2008 MKV GTI, and the ST handles better (no torque steer that I noticed), has more power and has a nicer interior. With Sync, myFord Touch and Nav it certainly has a better electronics suite. I think Ford knocked it out of the park with this one.

I really liked the handling and steering feel. It just felt connected to the road. My wife has been wanting a Focus for awhile now and was digging it pretty well during the test drive. I think she's really going to enjoy this car. It's just a fun car to drive and will be a nice DD for her.

Hopefully she'll let me drive it every now and then...

No pics today, we didn't get out of there until dusk and it's raining. Sorry, will take some pics on a sunny day soon.

Initial thoughts:

1. It is really a fun car to drive. The steering and handling is spot on.
2. The cockpit feels a bit like a spaceship, lots of unfamiliar controls (at least to me).
3. Not too sure about the Recaros. The bolsters are DEEP, and the seats are hard to get in and out of. They sure hold you in place though.
4. The shift lever is about an inch too tall for me, and the throws are fairly long. The shifts are very smooth and easy to perform.
5. The Sony sound system is pretty awesome. Trunk subwoofer is nice.
6. 2 USB ports + video input jacks.
7. The car likes to go fast (I can tell these things). It's a hot little car.

So, I drove it to work today. The simplest thing to say is that I was impressed. Lots of power when you get on it, and the handling/steering feel is wonderful. It doesn't have near the power my GT500 did, but then again, not many cars do. :)

The car has a very euro feel to it, and is much nicer than our MKV GTI, inside and out. I really like the feel of the shifter in this car, shifting is smooth and effortless.

Hit 32.6 mpg on the highway portion of my commute, dropped back to 27.5 once I was on city streets again. Very nice.

At this point I like everything about the car except the Recaros. I'm 6'1" and weigh 185, so I'm not fat, but those damned seats are still too narrow for me. Also, the side bolsters are so deep that getting into and out of the car gracefully is a major undertaking. A fairly minor thing, and something I'm sure I'll get used to.

Guess guys like me would have no shot fitting in those seats then. :yikes:

Great feedback, Quag!

I guess you could swap the drivers seat for a Focus conventional seat from the Titanium and either sell the Recaro (or save for car resale) but it would be so nice to have the grip of the Recaro if not too annoying.

Yeah, that would probably eliminate my butt too -lol.

My buddy with the '01 Cobra ...in his prior '78 'stang (a fairly narrow car) he added Recaros and loved them, but I found them to be exactly as Quagmire is describing the STs (the back-side bolsters were fine but the bottom side bolsters were not thigh/butt-friendly -lol) ...they hold you super-well but too narrow and a PITA to climb out of. Maybe there's just not enough real-estate in the Focus for wider seats (like the '78 stang?) since the Recaros in the GT500 were very nice when I tried them out.

Like I said, it's a comparatively minor issue. I'm sure I'll get used to it.

I cannot sing the praises of this car highly enough. It is a wonderful and fun little car to drive. I know it's just a Focus, but it really shines - esp. the interior fit, finish and material use (soft touch, etc...).

Ford did a great job on this car. It makes me proud to be a Ford guy. :ford:

If you have to have an economy car, this would be it. Hauls azz and gets good mileage. Congratulations.

Okay so a couple of you guys (or gals) have had these for several months.

Any thoughts, still like?

Love it. About 3500 miles on ours and I am still averaging 24.5 MPG. Almost as much fun as commuting in the Darkmobile and it costs me about 50% less

250 miles a week commuting back and forth to work plus errands on the weekend unless we need the cargo capacity of the Raptor

24 mpg sounds kind of low, you must have a heavy foot.

It is at the lower end of the mileage range for the ST but my commute is about 70%city streets with stop lights and there is a lot of road construction going on in Tampa so I get hung up in construction zones if traffic is heavy on the way home every day.

My foot is a bit heavy too. If you have a 45 minute ride each way, you might as well enjoy it.

I've gotten a total of two speeding tickets in my entire life. One in 1986 and one in 2007. Technology is a beautiful thing.

I see a pattern here.... everyone else gets good mpg's in their EcoBoost whereas you and CP don't.

You 2 should view the F150 forums and see how many people have issues, it's sorta a crap shoot if you get a good one or not it seems.
