When younger Mrs G, like most teenagers, would baby sit for many neighbors. She found out today that one of them OD'd last week. She was 9 years younger than Mrs G. Married for 16 years with 4 kids. She's pretty broken up about it today.

You were almost certainly taking them for pain from your surgery. ...it's people who have to take them for extended periods (chronic pain) that get addicted ...1 out of 6 active service vets are believed to be dependent on VA prescribed opioids ;-( ...the problem is that they work well and there are really no other viable alternatives that work as well for chronic pain so the risk of addiction => overuse => death is a very real progression and VA docs hate to see people suffer ...but there is also no mandatory monitoring, reassessment and staged detox program for those whose source of pain may have improved ...you just call for another script if still in pain (that may change). So the option to abuse that is part of the problem and making it tough to get for those who really have no quality of life without pain relief by requiring frequent affirmations would also be a problem as VA are spread thin as is and do not want to push wait times longer (by clogging the docs calendars) than they already are -- but something has to be done.

Percoset is Oxycodone, an analgesic generally indicated for relief of moderate to severe pain. It is a semisynthetic opioid synthesized from thebaine (C19H21NO3), an opioid alkaloid found in the Persian poppy and one of the many opioid alkaloids found in the opium poppy.

That's what happened to the junkie neighbors at the end of the street.
Before - both were "normal" people. Homeowners. Both worked. By all accounts were decent.
Then she got hurt (not sure how/what circumstance) and was on prescription painkillers.
Eventually couldn't get more legally (Doctor Rx), so got them through other means. But, that's expensive. Cheaper alternative - heroin, which has made a huge comeback.
Get on heroin - instantly hooked. For some reason husband then starts taking it. He's now hooked.
To pay for it - start selling it.
He loses his job - he was a machinist who I guess was very good. She still works at local restaurants (scary thought), but house and handicapped child (the REAL victim of this crap) get neglected. Son gets taken away by Child Services, which I guess really pushed them over the edge. That's when neighbor dude starts to really go nuts (trying to break into various neighbors homes, up all night walking the streets etc).
It's crazy how fast this destroys lives. :nonono:

In a small town, it seems like everyone knows or is related to everyone else.
Saw a bunch of people talking about the death of a young man on FB this week.
Found out today that he was the older brother (graduated last year from our HS) of one of Drew's teammates from the football and wrestling teams.
He killed himself, leaving a wife and 1 year old daughter. He was only 19.
The entire football team met at the HS this afternoon and went over to the funeral home as a team to comfort their teammate. I wasn't there, but I heard it was a very hard service to be part of.

Mrs G's Uncle David passed last night. He had fought cancer for a while. He was in remission when we visited them over spring break this year, but it had come back. He died of a massive heart attack after dinner at home with his wife, daughter, her husband and 2 grandkids.
We recently found out he was a true hero during his time in the Navy in Vietnam, but would never talk about it.
A great man that embraced me the first time we met when I started dating Mrs G all those years ago. Generous and humble. He'll be missed.

Spent the weekend wondering when the neighborhood wackjob would finally come to our house.
11pm last night I found out.
I was ready if he came up the driveway. :pullguns:
Working with local :cop: and about 10 neighbors on what we can do.
http://www.batesvilleheraldtribune.com/news/local_news/search-leads-to-felony-drug-charges/article_2a75f7e2-6544-5f38-be03-ef3d0c457c26.html
Well, I guess we knew this wouldn't end up good. Thankfully he didn't involve anyone else.
Early this morning the neighbor who's across the street from the Meth house (stories above) texted Mrs G and said an ambulance and a few police cars were there - no sirens or lights.
They have an autistic son who was taken away for about a year but was returned to them some time over the summer. The boy is picked up in a special bus before the rest of the neighborhood kids are. The police/ambulance came after the boy was picked up.
Found out Rick (nut job husband) committed suicide by hanging himself in their garage. To be honest, I thought he had moved out earlier this year. They used to have 2 cars (hers - an old red Grand Am, his a blue Jeep Liberty). The Liberty was never there, but I'd see his expensive bass boat gone from time to time, so thought he either used her car or had a friend pick it up. Never saw him outside. She was working at a restaurant in town.
Sad it ended this way, but he was truly a disturbed individual who made the lives of the whole neighborhood hell for a year.

When I didn't see him for a while earlier this year? He was serving time (assume from the Oct 2016 arrest). Had been recently released (not sure if that means a month ago, week ago or days ago) and was back home.

What is really sad is how many band names are still being used when there are at the most maybe one original member left in it. AC/DC is one of them.
Through the heydays of a bands existence there will be member change for several reasons which sometimes makes the band better or is not noticeable. But when is a band no longer 'the' band? What truly defines 'the' band? When are replacement members nothing more than background fill ins rather than contributors?
Some bands like Deep Purple can NOT be considered Deep Purple with John Lord no longer a live. They did go through some personnel issues during their initial run but the band survived because they still had the most of the core and the required replacements actually contributed to the band progressing.

I was lucky to make it thru my twenties... If I knew I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself...

It still runs on old-time TV channels. We saw it a couple of years ago on one of the "dot subchannels" locally.

Surely one of the very best drivers of all time! He could drive the wheels off anything ...and win! And was involuntarily put the ballot for POTUS in many states and got an amazing number of votes in the election!
There will never be another Dan Gurney -- RIP :(
Nice 4 minute vid w/him around 2014
Welcome to the first episode of Dan Gurney: All American Racer, Birth of AAR presented by Bell Helmets. Gurney was one of the greatest drivers, innovators, thinkers, that America has produced. He remains the only American team owner to win a Formula 1 Grand Prix in his own car, and RACER's Robin Miller took the opportunity to accompany Gurney down the hallway of the All American Racing workshop in Santa Ana...

My Wife and I were talking about Billy's legacy this morning. Many great teachers and preachers have walked this earth but don't think any had made as great impact for Kingdom of God as this humble sincere servant who simply wanted to please His Lord..those he impacted is a great number BUT that number pales in comparison to the number of people who heard then took his message to the people and places they lived among.
“Someday you will read or hear that Billy Graham is dead. Don’t you believe a word of it. I shall be more alive than I am now. I will just have changed my address. I will have gone into the presence of God.” ~ Billy Graham

Coming up on 50 years, M*A*S*H holds up today, and is in my opinion the best TV show ever made. What other show can make you laugh and cry in the same 30 minutes? It's on MeTV every day from 7-8. We used to watch it every day but they've cycled 3 times since we got here so now I only drop in for an episode or two a week. The final episode is still the most watched regular TV show ever (only lapped by Superbowl games, and the only non-superbowl game in the top 20.
