My Aunt passed away last Wednesday. Don't know the details, but she was about 87 years old and had not been doing well for a couple years. She lived in Fort Wayne IN, which is where I was born and that's where all my extended family is. Growing up, I saw her about 3 times a year...Christmas, Thanksgiving, and one week a summer at a lake house in Angola Indiana where we all gathered. I really liked her. She was a highly educated nurse. She was always very kind to us, fun loving, and had a genuine concern for people. My uncle Ray, her husband...is still living but I think he is about 2 years older than she was. Due to the virus, the funeral home only allowed 10 people at the service...so we did not go.

Actually, some say Roy had a stroke and the Tiger who had the tighter bonding with him intervened to 'save' him by trying to drag him off-stage, so to speak -- was trying to get to his neck so it could drag him to safety like he was her cub ...or so say some big cat experts. Governors in NY, NJ, parts of PA, MA an CT chose to put covid patients in nursing homes and long-term care but, instead of following CDC guidance to isolate them in a separate part of the facilities and then quarantine individuals for 14 days before release into the general nursing home population, they simply 'sprinkled' them into empty beds -- criminal!!!

As a result, almost 60% of the 29,451 covid-19 deaths to date in NY State were in nursing homes and long-term care facilities! Andy Cuomo, this is on you!!!

Cuomo tried to blame Trump and quoted Trump's "guidance". Trump said that nursing homes could take patients that they would normally admit, ie, they were not closed. Being an American and speaking and using fair English Grammer, I Interpreted this to mean that they could take patients that had recovered and were well enough to be admitted by the home's normal standards. Cuomo instead used nursing homes to warehouse actively infected patients and somehow expected a different result. Maybe Cuomo is an English Is A Second Language type.

Yes, he's an idiot. I thought he was doing things well early on but he just kept becoming more and more a politician.

68fastback
05-27-2020, 04:36 PM
He did it to keep hospital beds free for the glut of Covid patients he was sure would overwhelm the hospitals and that never happened.

Also Cuomo never used a fraction of the ventilators he hammered Trump over for weeks. The 2,000 bed Javits hospital Trump had the military build and staff in just days and the mammoth hospital ship USNS Comfort both went essentially unused.

Trump gave Cuomo everything he asked for and Cuomo essentially squandered those resources that could have gone to other states. And then he blames Trump b/c the CDC's projections were high.

Nursing homes were authorized to accept covid-infected patients too (not just recovered) as long as isolated and 14-day quarantined before release into population. In his zeal to hold hospital beds those states failed to make certain such facilities were informed of and following CDC guidance ...a 16K death screw-up in NY alone. Dunno total across the 5 NE states.

...and the CEO of Segway drowned after spilling into a lake on his Segway. How ironic!

Amazing how bright minds can think that Segway was actually going to solve the 'last mile' problem. Where were the validated requirements looking for a solution vs a technology looking for a problem? To my mind Segue never had a chance to compete with feet for the last mile in any large-scale sense because, while a potentially useful technology, the perils and impracticality outweighed the usefulness. Even in 'scooter' form, can you imagine a practical implementation for a few million commuters on scooters zipping around in, say, NYC each morning to get from subway to work? Can you even imagine most people on the subway also hauling a Segway around with them? I can't -- never could. Dean Kamen is a really bright guy and I like him, but he needed a reality check -lol- Or maybe that's part of why he sold out so soon (at the very beginning!) Another part is that he's an inventor, not a developer -- there's a big difference. :shades:

What about drones as a pervasive package delivery system vs just being a cool attention-getter in limited, specific environments? Nope!

What about true fully-autonomous electric cars successfully mingling and integrated in existing urban areas with human-piloted vehicles in large numbers and/or replacing city mass transit? Vehicle segregation (impractical?) and/or legal mandates (politically problematic) aside, seems unlikely to me. With vehicle segregation and/or legislative mandates in limited emerging markets that can actually do that, maybe ... but NOT in existing large cities. How about just as a non-urban replacement for the family car? ...maybe.

The biggest mistakes I've seen concerning product implementations based on new technology are:
1) not having specific requirements or, possibly worse, developer-written requirements (see below) -lol
2) assuming you understand the requirements without rigorous unbiased validation
3) tying requirements validation process to any specific product implementation (vs broad concepts, business needs and solution alternatives)
4) assuming that if you can develop something cool with a new technology it will be successful (Segue problem).

The following [abbreviated] conversation comes to mind circa 1982 at a Fortune 10 business investment cycle meeting:
[developer] even if we only capture 5% of the defined competitive market, the project will be wildly successful.
[executive staff] how do you know your product addresses that market?
[developer] because the requirements we developed show it's a "fundamentally better" way of doing what they already do
[exec staff] and you know that how? Have any customers indicated a preference for this "fundamentally better" way of doing business.
[developer] our requirements target the same business processes already used by the Fortune 500
[exec staff] and you know that how? Have any of those requirements been validated? Have any been monitized?
[developer] well, it's widely accepted that's the way they operate.
[exec staff] How widely? How many of our Fortune 500 customers have validated its usefulness and have in some way monitized the value of the proposed product functionality you want funded?
[developer] well, we haven't gotten that far yet -- but all we need to capture is 5% of that market
[exec staff] and how much of that market do we currently address with current set of integrated products and methods?
[developer] I don't know but it's probably 30-40%
[exec staff] And how much revenue is that annually?
[developer] To evaluate that we would have to do a marketing study across our marketing units worldwide.
[exec staff] So you want funding committed for a project that's "fundamentally better"; but it's merit is neither validated nor monitized, and it may cannibalize some portion of our current revenue stream?
[developer] well, we would want to target this at the competitive offerings -- to pull customers over to us.
[exec staff] Have any of those customers indicated interest in such functionality?
[developer] we don't know because they're not our customers but we only need to capture 5% of that opportunity.
[exec staff] What is the basis of that 5% number -- where did it come from?
[developer] it's just an estimate?
[exec staff] Based on what? What makes you believe that if our existing state-of-the-art systems could not entice that segment of the market that this "fundamentally better' unvalidated solution will?
[exec staff] How would our existing customers react to having or not having early access to such a "fundamentally better" solution?
[exec staff] What if it only captures 3% or 1% or 0% competitive turf?
[exec staff] How about you meet with the marketing unit heads for that sector and come back in the next investment cycle with a revised proposal that they support?
[senior development manager] that won't be necessary -- I'm withdrawing the request at this time.
[division VP] No, that will be necessary, and we look forward to seeing your revised proposal

Needless to say we didn't fund it; they didn't come back; and that senior manager got a new "opportunity" (as a marketing liaison manager :shades: -lol)
Besides, we [exec staff] had been working with their development staff folks and knew the product would fail because it would not be widely adapted with our customers or our competition's customers.

It's not nice to try and fool a Division VP or his executive staff :nonono: -lol

Media not talking about them...heard that she was found guilty of the email fiasco on June 2? and is set to testify on the stand in Sept... which to me means another big news story like more rioting is gonna start then to throw people off seeing her on the stand.

Didn't know she was tried for anything. We know she deleted 30k+ emails after receiving a Congressional subpoena to preserve them (among several other felonious transgressions) but Congress doesn't have the power to empanel a grand jury (i.e. no prosecution power) and I don't think DOJ has the interest to go there right now. Maybe Durham report will shed some light on that by association vis-a-vis the phony Russian dossier et al which is likely one (of several) reason she destroyed the emails b/c it's pretty clear she, the DNC and FBI higher-ups we all in cahoots either directly or indirectly and the DNC (and others :shades:) funded it. Federal district court tried to get Clinton and Mills to testify but I think that went nowhere she was SoS and the filed a writ of mandamus to block her testifying. The court seemingly granted Judicial Watch some standing given their successful FOIA filings and the fact that in [much] earlier testimony Clinton could remember nothing [stating 'I don't recall' more more than 100 times (as I recall -lol] but I don't think JW got anywhere and I haven't heard of any criminal proceedings since that earlier testimony. But who knows what's going on behind the scenes -- I would love for DOJ to pursue it!

RIP Va Beach

We’ve had our share of destruction over the years, we seem to be a hotspot.

This has been shared around social media today.... one of the backers is Parnell Williams who has been hosting concerts here last couple years...but was shut down this year.

But I’m sure the city will bow down to him next year for concerts eventhough he is destroying peoples businesses and lives w his support of BLM here.

We will see tomorrow what is left of our boardwalk if the police don’t step in :(

She will do a pact with the devil to stay alive until after the inaguration. Nov 4 doesn't matter, Trump would still fill the seat with the lame duck Senate (which could also be lost, heaven forbid).

Cameron Mitchell was my favorite actor/character in the show.

The show came on on one of the "dot subchannels" a number of years ago. Near as I could tell the ranch would have been located somewhere close to Sierra Vista AZ (home of Fort Huachuca). I got to visit Ft. Hoochie-Coochie a couple of times when I worked at DEC.

The show was produced by David Dortort who left Bonanza to do the High Chaparral. As I recall his name appeared on Bonanza as exec producer but it was in name only. I catch Bonanza on MeTV and can say that in the later years the show seemed to be on autopilot so I could see how he'd want to do something different.

Her younger sister was Joan Fontaine who died in 2013 at 96 ...they both have some good genes! -lol

My mom who was born four years before Olivia De Havilland was a big fan of all three of them and likely saw all their movies as they were released!
