I got myself in a situation and I'm not sure what to do.
I had some work done on my 09 Shelby that took longer than expected and now I need to get her home. The car is 100 miles away and it still has the stock GoodYears on it. The local temps in the area are ranging from 0 to 30 degrees. I tried to find a car trailer to rent or borrow but couldn't find anything and to have it shipped is like $500.00. I know the stock GoodYear tires loose traction when its cold and wet but, Would it be safe to drive it in these cold temps if the roads are dry and I drive it very carefully?
Any advice appreciated.

Alan, I had driven mine daily until I got my F250. I never had any issues (and yes, it does get below freezing down here). If you're paying attention, you should be fine. No tailgating, etc.....................plus, your shelby is white.................it doesn't go fast enough.

You'll be fine. I've driven mine through a winter storm, on the highway. Take it easy and leave plenty of room between you and those who can't drive well (pretty much everyone else on the road).

Joe G

I had to move mine a few times in Minnesota during the winter. If there was any snow/ice it lost traction QUICK, but was "ok" (ie: no speeding and leave extra braking distance) on dry but cold roads.

I've lived in the Chicago - N/W Indiana area my whole life so I have some experience with winter driving. I would only attempt the drive if the roads are dry. My main concern is the tires failing from the cold. I've heard some horror stories about Goodyear summer tires cracking and splitting in cold weather. My trip home will be about 2 hours at about 50mph from Fort Wayne, IN to St.John, IN. straight across US 30.

I know you know how to drive in winter.

I've never heard of them failing, but since they're a "summer" tire they are as hard as a brick when cold. I hit a little ice patch (maybe the size of an iPad) when going about 30mph and it made the car zip sideways in a hurry. Just letting you know my experiences. :tiphat:

Alan, I'll help you out here. You do the drive and I'll do what Beth did to me last week when I went to work during our ice storm. I'll text you every 47 seconds to see how the drive is going. That way, you'll be spending more time texting and driving and less time worrying about the tires.

The factory tires are hockey pucks at low temps. All performance fords. I lived with them on my sgt but I tossed them on the gt. Bottom line is no bold moves where you can break the rear end loose. Happens mostly when accelerating I turn from w parking lot onto a road... or when downshifting to accelerate for a passing event or downshifting to make a turn. All are oversteer events. Cold tires on cold pavement make these highly likely

ati

they dont have a u-haul trailer up there...that'll work....

I did think about U-Haul, They just have open trailers available and the trailers don't have any floors on them. The trailers have channeled rails that the tires fit into when you drive up on them. I would need to physically measure one to see if the tires would fit without doing any damage to the car or wheels.

Carnut

I guess you'll have to rely on others who have driven these tires at cold temperatures. I really have to think if your remember the operative word, EASY, you shouldn't be flexing the tires enough to cause them to crack. I guess your other option is to buy new tires before your trek home.

If I can get a window with a couple dry days on dry roads I may take the chance and just drive it home. My thoughts are pretty much what everyone else is saying, no fast starts, keep plenty of room for stopping, keep at or just below the speed limit, and just take it EASY.

I know I'm late to the thread, but is your car inside at the place it was worked on?

My point is, that the tires would be reasonably warm when starting your journey....and would stay warm while moving/driving.

Enough to get you safely home. Tires crack from cold when sitting day after day in freezing temps.

From a warm garage, non stop travel to a warm garage, I don't see where there is any issue.

But then again maybe someone has said all that since I didn't read the whole thread. LOL

New tires and wheels won't go on until spring. I just about have Lisa convinced to let me pull the trigger on them. I still can't find an enclosed trailer so I will probably wait until we have a couple dry days with dry roads and just drive it home. As long as the roads are dry cleanup shouldn't be that bad.

If the dealer lets you keep it there til a good day happens that is your best bet if you are worried about it.

Cold tires on a powerful car can be nerve racking trying to drive it a few miles.

Its at custom shop and the owner said that he will keep it inside until I pick it up. If the tires are warm when I leave and I drive it straight home I don't think the temperature will affect them. I'll just drive it slow and easy.

I got stuck in some West Va mountains for 14 hours one time due to the waters rising in the Monongahela river making it impassible one winter.

Drove the car home today in 7 degree weather with dry roads, Car handled and ran great, no problems at all.

Alan, I had driven mine daily until I got my F250. I never had any issues (and yes, it does get below freezing down here). If you're paying attention, you should be fine. No tailgating, etc.....................plus, your shelby is white.................it doesn't go fast enough.
