View Full Version : Under Hood Fuse Box Questions

I was doing a little detailing under the hood and took the cover off the fuse box to clean it. While I had the cover off I was checking out the fuses and relays in there. I noticed that some of the micro relays appeared to be installed upside down or backwards. I popped one out to look at it a little closer and noticed the 4 pins were numbered (87-86-85-30) and then I put it back in the same way I took it out. I noticed that the way the pins were located on the relays that they could be installed either way.
My question is:
1) If a relay is installed backwards will it still work?
2) Does it matter which way they face?

Not sure about your specific relay, but normally it does matter, the control circuit is power in ground out for example. One multiple controls or outputs the right circuit might not be energized. Finally, it used to be that some circuits that are not used with your option package are turned around so they don't work.

Makes sense to me.
The relays in question are Fuel Pump, A/C Clutch, High beam, Fog Lamps and Luggage Compartment Lid which are all in use.
Whats concerning me is that the relay for the fog Lights is installed backwards from the this drawing. The numbers on the relay pins are backwards from the drawing.

I guess the first question is, do the fog lights work correctly? Perhaps the drawing is wrong. Some of those look to be four pole breakers, if they were reversed say on the control side, then your power would go direct to ground, you will then have a short circuit. If everything works fine and you are not having issues, it doesn't make sense to switch them around. Not sure on your relays, but many have a larger spade or something that keeps you from installing them backwards. I guess you could use a volt/ohm meter to check the pins. There should be an online source to identify what the pin numbers are for, they are fairly standard and I've forgot which one is which. So for example you could identify which pin is has switch voltage, constant voltage, and ground, then correlate those to the numbers on the relays.

Everything does work correctly and I haven't changed anything. I was just curious on the orientation because the design of the relay allows it to be installed frontwards or backwards.

Some of them use diodes and it makes a big difference, check the link out I gave in post 5

I am at a loss and I don't have my Shelby anymore to check it against. Maybe one of the other guys can check their cars? I still think I would check the pins and receptacles before I made a change.

Like the old saying goes: (If it ain't broke don't fix it). I am curious though on what the other guys have, Maybe someone could check theirs and report back.

OK, Lets get back on topic.

If anyone has time could you post a pic of your fuse box for comparison?

Obviously the 7018's don't matter what direction they are in.

Thanks Guys for posting up pics. I'm more confused now than before. Kinda makes you wonder what the proper orientation of these relays are.

Alan, put the cover back on your fuses and step away from the vehicle! :sherriff:

 The covers been back on, I'm just trying to understand WTF the proper way is.
