I use 2000 grit wet dry sand paper. I use water with the sand paper because it helps lift and remove the paint.
I use a small piece of wood and wrap the sand paper around. It helps make sure that you sand a flat surface. Do not use a finger it isn't flat and last thing you want is a dip in the paint. I use distilled water only.Just put it in a spray bottle like mine. The reason I use distilled water because it has no minerals in it like tap water.

Locate the rock chip rub area with prep wipe even if you think there isn't any contaminates. Wipe the area and let it dry. Then using the primer paint pen dab a little paint in the chip. let it dry.Spray the area with water and wet the sand paper to Sand the area to remove the excess primer.. Then using the base coat pen dab a little paint on the chip. Try to fill the chip almost to the top. Let the paint dry. Now you need to sand it flat useing water on the area and sand paper Taking care not to sand to much. when sanding you need to wipe the area off every so often to sure you are not sanding to much paint off.You will see shiny paint around the area where you just painted. That is the clear coat that the sand paper hasn't sanded yet. As you sand that shiny paint will slowly disappear. You need to be careful because when the shiny paint disappears than you are done sanding. You dont have to remove the paint that far but the closer you get the smoother the repair will be.Don't push on the sand paper to hard. Its not necessary you want to go slow wiping the area off often to see your progress.
At this point You need to wipe off with prep wipe to clean the area.
With the clear pen fill the chip to the top. You need to make sure that you have enough paint in the chip to over fill the chip. Don't go crazy because the more clear you use the more you have to remove. Then you need to sand repair flat.
Here is where I am on my repair. I have filled the chip with paint and filled with clear. As you can see my sanding marks around the clear. It looks like I need to add more paint to my repair. I will see how it looks when I am done sanding off the clear.

Wow awesome how-to! I just don't think I have the balls to use the sandpaper, I'm pretty confident I'd find a way to screw it up.

Cool how-to, Art ...process seems very similar to repairing dings on musical instruments that use automotive paints (most vintage electric guitars). Can't wait to see how it turns out :wtg:

With painted on stripes, my car has already had its share of sanding done to it!

So I had to start over. :yikes:
I didn't have enough paint in the chip to cover so I had do sand the area down again.
I know that the picture looks bad because I couldn't get my paint pen to flow very good. i did however get enough paint in the chip this time. Remember that you have to sand down after you paint it so not a problem. This is nor my first repair so I wasn't nervous. As you can see in the next picture that I sanded through the clear adjacent to the rock chip so I had to use my clear spray can to paint the area. The reason being that I needed to add some material to that area otherwise I would just sand through the base coat. Then I continued to sand over the paint chip till I had it just right.

This is how it looks after I sanded it out and resprayed the area.
After I sprayed the area I have to sand again to flatten out the clear. The process is called cut and rub. After I sanded the clear to make it flat I used my polisher with the white pad and used finish polish. to rub out the finish. It came out beautiful However I could still see the repair. I had to look hard but since I knew where they were it was easy to see so i taped it off again and resprayed the spot again to hide the divots better.

I am going to let this dry overnight. Then in the morning I will sand down the area and polish it out and post the results.
Remember this is wet sanding not dry sanding. Use a squirt bottle and keep the area wet. I also spray water on the sand paper to wash the debris off the sand paper. It is hard to see where the chips are. They were on the hood in the left front. If you are scaired to do this like Joe than practice on the wife's car. Just dont tell her. You know its full of rock chips.
Final pics tomorrow morning.
In the first pic at the bottom above the tape you can see the repair. You have to zoom in There are 2 little spots. With the last coat that I put on those spots should disappear

I have had pretty good luck using a paper match stick to fill the hole and a piece of 2000 grit glued to pencil. A little polishing compound and all done.

Hardest thing about it was patience. You need to check your progress often.Use plenty of water so you don't sand on a dry surface. The paint the I got matches perfectly. I need to buy new paint pens for sure. I know there is still paint in them but it doesnt seem to want to come out. It made the job much harder.
