My car is due for a smog test this year and of course it has a tune in it. What have people experienced in California and the new testing procedures when it comes to pass/fail?

Obviously a question for Cali folks....check with your local clubs

It's not just California. We have emissions testing in Colorado too. If it's just a tune and it's not a 50-state tune from, like Ford, then you should have gotten a tuner box and should be able to put the original back. You should restore it and drive it for a while so it has a chance to relearn all the settings.

On the other hand, if you have modified the car, e.g., CAI, throttle body, etc and have a tune to go with it you have to also restore that hardware. Running it with the stock tune can do damage to the car and it probably won't pass emissions with the old tune and new hardware anyway.

But of course you knew that anyway :)

By the way, my Ford GT had all of those: Throttle Body, pulley, tune, etc. It passed emissions test with flying colors.

That's why I love Mississippi. If your blinkers, brake lights, horn and wipers work, and you can see around the cracks in the windshield you are good to go.

Good to know. I'm gonna give it a go. No way to return everything back to stock. Way too much work.

You got nothing to lose. But ca keeps track of tests so if you fail they will know it. Colorado does too. One thing about Co is the visual inspection. The first time they asked me if I had the fgt headers with just the bumps for the cats. They knew about it. Second test they never even asked

Ya I'm good on the visual. No headers or anything like that. And my Cai has a sticker. Just concerned over the port stuff. I'm sure I'll be fine. Smog stuff always makes me nervous for some reason. Even on a completely stock vehicle.

Valid concern. when I lived in San Diego I had a 1972 Wagoneer (loved that truck, I'd still have it if my brother hadn't run into the ground and finally threw a rod) and I had to go to three different places to finally get it passed. It passed the actual smog test fine but they kept claiming it was missing a smog part despite my showing them the waiver that was granted to the previous owner when it was brought into the state in 1978. It said right on the certificate it was granted for the life of the vehicle. The response was that the vehicle was over 20 years old and no one expected it to last this long.

With stock exh I think you'll be fine.....luckily in our area they don't do emissions.....

Robert I was good on my smog. I even left my CAI on and the smog guy was ok with it. No CARB sticker. Just make sure the O2 sensors are still on and you should be fine. They only run it to 25 MPH on the rollers. If you have to put the stock tune back in then you have to drive it for 30 miles to reset everything. Same goes for the battery. if its disconnected then you have to drive the car to reset everything.
