View Full Version : My new Job

As you all know, part of my SA trip was a stop over in Holland. I interviewed with a former colleague for a position that would be based there, with some travel between Boston, Holland and South Africa. They were very interested in me and advised I would have an offer within a month.
Upon my return to the US, I discovered a few issues in the company I currently work for and the group I work at. Things started unraveling fast and furiously on both ends. To the extent that I was ready to walk out and forget it all. I was advised by the President of the group I work at to hang in and wait, changes were coming and I should be patient.
Mid May, I received my offer from the Netherlands; it was OK not what I was expecting. I had two weeks to give them a decision. At the same time, I was told to sit tight there could possibly be something in the works for me locally. The group did not want me making a hasty decision based on what I was experiencing.
Last week they approached me and made me an offer to become their Administrative Business Manager. The money is on par with the other position and no travel or relocation involved. After thinking about both, weighing everything up I decided to accept the local position.
I have handed in my notice to my company, my last day being June 30. They are however having a fit over the 2 vacation days I previously requested. They have stated it is against company policy to use any vacation in lieu of notice worked. They might however end up letting me go earlier once they discover I am going to work for the group that no longer requires their services.
We'll see, what happens. The drama starts here...
The plot thickens. Congrats on the new job, and not having to travel is definitely a plus.

Some people like to travel, evidently you don't...I can understand both sides. But what does a business manager do? And don't say "manage the business".

I don't mind travel, especially international. I have thought long and hard about this and really don't want to deal with the immigration side of things again.
It is a group of 8 Radiologists, 1 Physician Assistant. I will see to the day to day operations of the group, deal with contracts, payroll (we do have an accounting company ), bill pay and compliance. The largest part of my job will be Compliance. The Feds are throwing all kinds of laws at Healthcare, HIPAA was a small one compared to what is coming down the line. So this will be a huge learning curve for me.

Thank you for that. I appreciate it.
I have worked with most of the members of this group for 10 years. I know their quirks, their issues and their personalities. I started out at the hospital they work at as a receptionist, moved to become the secretary for Interventional procedures then to the Secretary for the Director of the department. They poached me away 5 years ago to work for the company that does their billing.

I don't get the issue.
You're leaving your current company.
You're trying to help THEM by giving them a whole month's notice (you said last day of June 30), but they're complaining about 2 days of vacation (that you have coming, right?).
I don't see the issue. What are they going to do - you're already leaving, right?
Take the vacation you already scheduled. If necessary, make your last day the day before you start "vacation" and see if your new company will let you start when you return from Orfstock.

Some companies, like NGC, have a policy in place that says they reserve the right to not allow vacation once you give your notice. A lot of it has to do with transitioning your knowledge to your replacement before you leave so the company is not left high & dry. That being said, 30 days should be more than enough time to show someone where all the skeletons & land mines are hidden. Additionally, if you take vacation during that time, it typically means that the company will be paying you less when you separate since you used those couple days of vacation instead of getting paid out for them.

Congrats on the new position! You are going to be the most valuable employee they have since you're doing compliance especially if the group bills Medicare and, God forbid, Medicaid. You'll keep those docs out of jail and money in their pockets. The Feds have overtightened the screws on everyone including extreme fines and jail time for a number of violations but most of those are for intentional "offenses." However the concept of guilty until proven innocent has become law with them. Fears of bounty hunting RAC auditors keeps our Compliance officer up at nights. I hear Lunesta or a six pack often helps. If you do a good job with compliance, and I'm sure you will, you'll be worth at least triple their current offer guaranteed. If you want I can PM you the name of our officer's most helpful newsletter. Again, congratulations!
Most important now is to decide what color GT500 to get. I suggest black with red stripes. :mafiasmilie:

Gee, sounds like a couple of sick days are in order. I doubt, working in your field that a doctor's note would be hard to come by. Better yet, change your notice, you're not required by law to give any notice, unless you have a contract.

Medicare and Medicaid are our biggest Payors. Both are a HUGE PIA to work. Fortunately we do not order any tests. My guys only read what other order so for the most part we're good. There is a whole new section to HIPAA I forget what its called, though I'm sure by the end of July I'll be dreaming it.
It'll be black *G* and I'm thinking about having Gold (as in the GT-H) stripes painted.. Hey, I live in NOLA, Black and Gold are the Saints colors. Joking aside. Black no stripes or Black Red stripes.

Well bugger, I had a whole freaking page typed and no telling what freaking happened.
UGH
The transition went well. The previous company found out where I was going and about had a shite fit. They told me I signed a confidentiality agreement, blah blah blah. I advised my new job had nothing to do with patient billing/ collections, etc. I was merely managing a group no longer managing the billing side of it. They settled down after that.
There are few issues in the office, but as I no longer work for the management company they are not mine to deal with. The administrator called for me last week and was giving a very cold greeting by one of the ladies. They were told last week that the contract was not being renewed by the group. The current company has no use for anybody in our geographical area so they're being retrenched.

it but
exempts
themselves from it,
to be signed by a president who
smokes ,
with funding
administered by a treasury chief who
didn't pay his taxes,
to be overseen by a surgeon general who is
obese,
and
financed
by a country that's
broke.
What the hell could possibly go wrong?
J/k :haha: Hope the new job is going wel!!

Thanks for asking Joe G.
On one hand this is the easiest job I have ever had. On the other it is the most diverse job. It is really going well. we have had a few hiccups but mostly because the "management" of the group are not certain of the practice. I love that it is only me and them. I don't rely on anybody to do my job and nobody relies on me to do theirs. Once things get settled and I have my office complete it'll be so much easier to work.
Dan,
I don't even want to discuss the state of healthcare. I believe anybody working in healthcare will eventually work for the government. No if's ands or buts.
I found out today that by the end of 2011, a family of 4, earning $80k a year will be eligible for Medicaid at no cost to them. While I will be paying $500 a month for my insurance with a deductible of $2000 per annum. Insane!!!

Sounds like you're enjoying, all things considered.
Yeah, the whole systems is now becomming completely unfair/inequitable. Somehow, someone in an ivory tower decided a fam of 4 @ 80K is poor but you're rich! :doh2: ...four bought votes (two now, two more later) trumps your one.
:boxing:Reid :boxing:Pelosi :boxing:Oblahma

great to hear Heidi.
on the "rich" thing, my dad found that out last year. He'd never earned more than $42,000/year in his life, but when he sold his beachfront condo in Florida, which he'd bought 22 years ago for about $200k by going in half with my brother and later buying him out...he paid a tax bill higher than my annual income. :nonono:

How's this working out?
