The big dog 5.0-liter Coyote V8 in the Mustang GT is rated at 435 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque, up 15 hp and 10 lb-ft, while the base car’s 3.7-liter V6 loses 5 hp, for a 300 hp/290 lb-ft rating.
But it’s the 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, Mustang’s first since 1986, that’s been the most tantalizing, and it doesn’t disappoint with 310 ponies and 320 lb-ft on tap.

However.... :banghead:
Just as important to pony car fans, while there were rumors that the all-new Mustang was going to weigh hundreds of pounds more than the current car, the gains are much more modest across the board, ranging from 12-87 pounds, depending on the model.
I thought the new car was gonna weigh LESS than the current series??

That was the smaller prototype. The one they actually went with is a only couple inches shorter but also a couple inches wider. Without IRS it supposedly would weigh about 90# less ....with IRS the coupe (fastback) weighs about 30# more (vert only weighs about 12# more; not sure what the 87# is) ...not bad t all considering even more tortional ridgidity and still weighing way less than it's porker competitors.
I'm betting that SVT Cobra with the flat-plane crank will weight a bit less tho :shades:

Well there goes the gain for horsepower increase.

Compared to the 2013 Boss its short 9 horsepower and up 20 ft.lbs of torque and also up about 75 lbs. Add the performance pack option and it should be close to the Boss performance. The performance pack adds a 3.73 Torsen 19 inch performance tires (matching the Boss), heftier springs and stabilizer bar and shock tower brace. I would think that would at least put it on par and maybe better with the IRS in real world road conditions.
There is always the FRP Supercharger charger kit for another 300 horsepower. That would still put you under 45k if you don't add any other options. Hardly GT500 performance, but a little more than half the price without a supercharger kit and still well under if you do.
Just benchracing it. Low 12's. I found the following on the web
Enthusiast publication Motor Trend put the 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 (http://www.mustangblog.com/blog/1056016_first-drive-2012-ford-mustang-boss-302) through its paces and came up with a quarter-mile time of 12.3 seconds at 115.8 miles per hour. But one driver did MT one better. This unnamed driver put drag radials on an otherwise stock Boss, and came up with a time of 11.72 seconds at 117.2 miles per hour.

fwiw, Ford has said the '15 5.0 will outperform the Boss -- it was one of their benchmark vehicles for performance. Porsche (I forget the model now) was one of the handling benchmarks. Also, the '15 has substantially improved aero -- even over the much-improved '13/14. Since this is an all-new vehicle, the hi-po roll-out will take a year or two.

Love the two-tone interior, wheels, front end.
Hate the rear end :redcard:...too much forward angle in the tail lights.

It has taken me quite a while to digest the new design, but I like it now. The rake of the rear tail lights sort of the mimics the rake the the 65/66 Mustang had (yes it has a rake). I think it is the hash look that makes it look funny. A set of Le Mans top stripes would help it a lotk and the side stripes.
The performance package comes only with black painted wheels, ugh. I supposed you could powder coat them or have them stripped and polished.

I'm pretty sure Ford has a response car in 2016 MY. Until then there is the 13-14 GT-500.

For sure -- that is the one to watch for pure NA fun ;-)
There were rumors a while bak of a problem early-on with the flat-crank engine but not clear if was the standard GM FUD-spreading vs something real ...haven't heard of any problems aside from that unattributed 'rumor-mill' blurb.

I don't think any problems Ford may be having are insurmountable. A number of Euro manufacturer's flat crank engines are very successful. As I understand flat crank technology, the crankshafts don't have big counterweights on them (part of the reason they are high revving) and they are cubic inch sensitive due to the weights of the piston and rod combination (due to vibration). Special lightweight alloys can make of for some of those limitations. Ford has been known to work with Ferrari in the past (cranks for original 32 valve DOHC Cobra motor) and may have this resource available to them if needed.
Frankly, Ford is a global company, and should be more than capable of producing a Voodoo motor.

I agree. Possibly they've even instrumented and disected the state-of-the art competitor -- Ferarri -- since they have an awesome flat-crank V8 -- if you can even get one since those cars were sold by invitation-only. The bore-stroke ratio is also important with flat-crank V8s since no crank counterweights (just necessary journal mass) make the overall RA design (even the materials) critical. It will be a real feather in Ford's cap to pull off a world-class flat-crank V8. Sure hope so.

I'm curious if it will carry the "Shelby" name. I've heard rumors they were going to drop it.
68fastback
08-07-2014, 07:19 PM
That's what I'd heard too ...no Shelby name.
King Cobra wordmark and the old Cobra designmark (the one on all the classic Cobras that Ford actually owned) have both been resurrected at US-PTO and are in flight on the same schedule for a use/lose date of Nov '15 which would nicely accommodate an MY'16 ...but how that mates to GT350 or not is unclear ...could be more than one flavor.

The old cartoonish cobra, that just looks like a knock of Shelby's? That should be great..... I saw last night that they are to be unveiling the GT350R's in Sept. Maybe we will get some more insight then.
68fastback
08-08-2014, 05:21 PM
Awesome! I hadn't heard that. Almost sounds like they may do like they did with the BOSS ...do a race-only serial version first and then coin a VIN street variation. That created lots of cred last time.
This is the old Cobra logo that Ford has actually owned all along but TM goes away when no longer in active use so Ford has it back in the US PTO pipeline as a designmark with a use/lose by 11/15.

Ford owns that? I always thought that was Carrol's since it was usually on the front of the AC's.
That's not the one I was thinking about. I was thinking about the Cobras on the side of the 76's King Cobras

Shelby registered it and within weeks Ford petitioned to have it amended as part of the "published for opposition process" -- remember Shelby was a Ford contractor and Ford retained ownership of eveything created. Shelby owns the wordmarks (gt350 and gt500) but Ford owns the designmarks. I actually saved a pic of the USPTO file photo of the original filing (if I can find it I'll post it) and then amended with Ford's name literally stamped over Shelby -- back in the age of paper files! -lol.

Motor Trend just released their first drive on the 2015 Mustang. It was a fully loaded GT (heavy) and did not have the performance pack which should improved the quarter mile numbers. Their numbers were a 12.8 @112+mph. Motor Trend drivers are not known for the drag strip prowness so I expect these numbers are a little low. I would also expect a few tenths improvement with the performance pack, maybe more with a real driver.
I guess we shall see what the "rags" come out with. Apparently the press is getting some cars now.
Still, a 12.8 is not a bad time considering the 2007 GT500 was pretty close to same number as flogged by the magazines back then.

Imagine what an Eco-Boost 5.0 could do. Still I think the real number with the new GT performance pack and stickies should be in the low 12's somewhere. I want one.

I noticed in the time-slip still the NA 5.0 was run two weeks after the other two and the run was aborted ...not sure what that means. Still pretty darn quick.
Nice to see that FRP already has IRS-specific drag parts available ...those will sell big time, I think.

My order would be:
Base Mustang GT
Perfomance Pack
Aftermarket Sirus Speakers etc (from kid).
Strip and polish factory wheels
Race Red (maybe)
That would be it, all the premium stuff adds weight and cost. Cloth is better in the desert anyway. Recaros are just to hard to get in and out of the car.
Now to go out and buy that winning lottery ticket.

It means the left lane aborted, the supercharged car also had an abort in the left lane. The Ecoboost car had a foul in the left lane. All three cars were in the right lane. Pretty crummy reaction times. I used to get under .250 pretty consistently. Maybe FRP needs to hire me.

I was amazed when practicing on a tree at ATCO several years ago that while I could only get down to about 1/2 sec, Blackshelby was knocking off .0nn and even a couple of .00n :yikes:
The winner of the actual contest (among the 8 folks being honored -- Jim being one -- from back when Blackshelby was a world record holder) won the contest with a 0.003 :surprised:.
When I asked Blackshelby what the trick was he said -- no trick, you get into the rhythm and go when you see the light just START to come on. I said: Huh? He said: oh, yeah ...it's a filament bulb -- it takes a fraction of a second to fully light and if you look very carefully you can 'go' when it just STARTS to come on.
Apparently you need bionic eyes too -lol
That said, the "pro tree" (where all ambers flash and .4 sec later you get the green) is pure timing. The pros have that .4 sec baked into their brains -lol
