Ford had/has a somewhat similar Tool Tracker system first offered almost a decade ago ...no batteries in the 'tags' ...more similar to antenna-activated smart-card technology managed by the controller.

My Galaxy5 cell phone was getting pretty trashed, so I had to break down and get a new one yesterday... It was the longest lasting phone I have had... I decided to stay with a Samsung phone and got a Galaxy 8+!! It cost me 500 bucks though, and that was renewing my contract for 2 years... I guess my phone is a pretty important tool!! Lol...

Cool phone though, has face recognition, easy maneuverability thru the apps and screens, biggest screen available on a phone, and it wraps around the sides... Only complaint is the speaker still sucks, not loud enough...

Going to get a case for it today...

That is why I got them!!

68fastback
01-06-2018, 05:18 PM
For sure ...and through floor joists too ...I used a loooong (about 18") self-feed for a few cable runs in the basement -- through the overhead floor joists. The long length enables the drill body to fit into the prior cavity to minimize angled edges on the holes.. This is why some electricians prefer an angle drill and shorter bit so holes can be fully perpendicular to the joists -- makes for much easier cable pulling especially when lots of cables in the same run.

Alloy Dave
01-07-2018, 05:07 PM
I don't buy too many tools anymore, have most of what I need...but occasionally need to fill a "hole" in my needs or buy to replace a broken tool.

Just bought some lineman's pliers for stripping wire and twisting grounds when doing light electrical. Never had a pair of these, always used side cuts before which are harder to use.

21920 21921

Also my worklight broke last time I used it, so I bought a new one. THis is LED and rechargeable...smaller too. My old one was corded, so this will be easier to take into attics and crawlspaces etc. Also it has a feature where when the battery gets low, it goes dim for 30 minutes so you don't have sudden darkness in an attic or something.

21918 21919

Hmmm. Interesting that the prior generation (https://www.ebay.com/itm/60-LED-Rechargeable-Cordless-Work-Light-Garage-Inspection-Lamp-Torch-Lithium-Ion/292250645935?hash=item440b7ef5af:g:N3gAAOSwY0hZt5u 2)(non SMD) LED Li-Ion is only half that price ...maybe not as much light but could be very handy in the many power outages here too.

Haven't found one that works all the time. :banghead:

I have the very original one. It's probably feeble compared to more recent StudFinder versions ...and it took some getting used to (mine's about 3/16 off to one side so I just marked the center there ...and it can be fooled by plaster joints somewhat but overall it works well if you approach from both sides. If that point to the same spot, it usually has it nailed ...if not I repeat above and below. Then I validate using a very thin 1" nail locked in the jaws of a ViceGrip -lol

I looked for a pic to post but none of their current products looks vaguely similar. Mine looks like a black plastic brick about the size of a large cellphone but 4x as thick. One button and some LED lights. You press button while on the wall away from where you want to test (if you accidentally start on a stud it's sensitivity won't pick up another stud, so start again in another location) and, while still pressing button, slide slowly toward the suspected location or area you want to eval and watch as it progressively lights more lights as you approach the target and then progressively turns them off as you continue past it. Back and forth until you find the center. At least that's how my ancient StudFinder works :rofl3:

Yep, that's it. Guess where the studs are, place the finder 1/2 way between and move right or left. The lights starts off slow and then peaks at center and then trails off. The next one should be 16 or 24" away. I always start near an electric outlet box - the stud will be on one side or the other.

The switch on my 30 year old one gave out so I had to buy a new one. It's much more sensitive. Some finders can locate electric lines and copper pipe too.

I have a mini compressor, works great for driving brads or a few nails here and there. Noisy tho lol.

Anyway, it came with 4 rubber feet, but about every 6 months one of them falls off...I was down to one rubber foot.

So I decided to mount it to a board and add new feet. I had to counterbore for the bolts so they didn't scratch when I set it down. I sanded the board and applied 3 coats of polycrylic to keep it from staining easily.

lol....I have two options when I do rentals. One of those, which is usually what I do....or...I have an air tank. It's bigger and it's a "one time" deal...I can shoot about 10 nails before it runs out of air lol. I almost never use it, but it's handy on rare occasions.

I bought a new DeWalt cordless drill...my old one (which I bought in 1999) failed recently. It works, but the clutch is stuck on one setting. One of you whizbangs could probably fix it. I went to Lowes, they only had 20V...I have about 6 tools that run on the old 18V system, so I asked for the manager...they found 3 18V drills in the back...going out of style...bought one for $129 and it came with two more 18V batteries and a charger. The new 20V units were about $259 I think...may have been a hammer drill...not sure.

I like that form factor :wtg: ...only 20# too :wtg:

Mine has a aluminum pump too. When you store it for the winter (or if not using for a month or more) be sure to use some pressure washer pump lubricant/preserver. Aluminum corrodes enough to freeze the pump and the lubricant prevents that -- works well too ...Home Depot, Lowes, etc all carry it (various brands ...I've used Briggs & Stratton's but any will work). I had difficulty freeing mine up after storage and after discovering this stuff it's fine now even after years of non-use (I mostly use it on the deck, house siding, etc., so not very often).

You want the kind (I think the 3rd photo) that shunts an ammeter across the fuse. That way you can tell which circuit is drawing current and how much. Then you can zero in on the stuff on that circuit. Know that certain ones will draw - e.g., the ECU circuit, probably the radio. Do you have a radar detector plugged into an unswitched plug?

Bought one of these recently. I had the old style, but the old ones were only plastic and broke easily. These have metal inserts that make them much stronger.

I really like that -- looks very handy!!

I suspect the installation challenge could be precisely drilling the holes in the zero-clearance insert ...sort of a one-shot deal ...a good vertical drill guide could be essential..

My Craftsman saw had a kerf splitter (slightly shy of blade-width and not dead-aligned -doh) built into the safety shield but it was not manufactured very precisely and not easy to remove, so I soon removed it and have never used it since. What you bought there seems to be a much nicer solution!

The "kit" they give you comes with a template to drill the holes. Easy.

Ah, so you can then use a drill press to get them perfectly vertical and placed. Just wondering b/c I can't imagine getting sufficient accuracy with a hand drill.

Yes you can get sufficient accuracy with a hand drill, a drill press is not required or even recommended in the instructions (as a matter of fact, most drill presses require extra measures to make sure they are drilling perpendicular anyway). I've made two of them previously with no issues. The instructions are a bit complex, but essentially you cut a test board, then screw the template to the test board. Then you align the assembly (test board and template) to the zero clearance throat plate and clamp it down, then drill all the way through the test board and into the ZC throatplate by using the template holes. Essentially you have about 1/2" of vertical "guide" by using the template and test board together. It takes about an hour to do the entire process, but you only have to do it once.

Well, it's certainly your decision but I mentioned that b/c of some of the comments -- even by a highly experienced woodworker, were that it's a real problem. It was earlier today I was poking around and I forget if it was Amazon, eBay or another woodworking site (I had about 20 sites open as I was researching some electronics meters) so I don't have the links, but it sounded like it was pretty easy to mess-up based on their instructions so thought I'd mention it since my impression was that a drill press would solve the dominant issues of vertical alignment and accidental oversize (tapered?) holes from hand-drill movement. You probably won't have any issues b/c you know what you're doing, but if it was me I would absolutely use a drill press -- it's a large 70 year old Craftsman by King Seeley and is set perfectly vertical. Surely you see the potential issues with verticality and resulting 'loose' holes using a hand drill, as quite a few others have actually experienced. Just a heads-up.

Starting on my next project in the woodshop...organizing all this crap. I don't like the storage bins shown...you have to pull out every drawer to see what's in them. I've ordered some flat storage boxes with see-through lids...we'll see how that works.

I still have a couple of those pull-out thingies and also several clear-top cases. I think both have their pros and cons. For things that are easily and unambiguously labelled (e.g. machine an sheetmetal screws, nuts, lock washers, etc) the pull-outs work okay. For other bits and items whose description is less than simple, seeing seems superior. I like the cases where you can configure the compartments as long as the dividers are not easily disturbed. Christmas tree bins (like at old-time hardware stores use for nails and such) work well too but take too much space and need a clear cover in a woodshop to keep things clean. For bigger or higher volumes of things I use stackable plastic peanut-butter jars and just slip labels right in the jar. Seems everything has its +/-s -lol

Bought a new drum sander for the shop...they had a sale $300 off plus I got a free stand...which I had to customize to add wheels so I can move the tool around. Has separate controls for sanding depth and feed speed on the conveyor. Weighs 185 pounds including the stand....had a friend help me carry the main unit down to the basement...it weighs 130 pounds!
