View Full Version : Check the insides of your front tires...

Our cars have negative camber from the factory... Good for handling, bad for tire wear...
My front 555's are not even close to the wear bars but the inside edges are bald, I ordered new ones... The alignment on my car is good...
Check your tires...

Dave posted these specs for the GT500 in 2007 on another forum site :shades:
A little negative camber benefits handling but does tend to wear the inner edge more -- do you recall what yours is set at?
A little toe-in will tend to reduce inner edge wear slightly by moving the wear pattern a bit more toward the center (less so with wide, low profile tires) due to the lateral preload effect, and also counters wander over road undulations. Too much toe-in will cause it to 'dart' in a twitchy way. Neutral or toe-out will make it 'skate' or wander in a lazy way (neutral) or more annoyingly (toe-out) and make you work the steering wheel slightly but continually to 'adjust' where you want it in the lane. Toe-out will increase inner-edge wear.
My preference is just enough toe-in so it tracks well with neither darting nor wander -- i..e. not needing much steering correction -- usually 1/16th to an 1/8th -- but varies by car, geometry, tires profile and even suspension travel and damper type, etc. Just enough toe-in pre-loads the outer bearing and keeps the tires laterally pre-loaded, which tends to help turn-in response and also works well handling-wise in conjunction with slight negative camber.
The fact that one side (drivers) is wearing more could be anything from the roads you drive -- due to crowning the fast lane on the freeway will put more wear on the drivers side vs around town will be more neutral regards drivers/pass side wear -- to supension loading. If you have adjustable coil-overs (I forget) you can have the car set up on "corner scales" so that it is as balanced as possible -- be sure they weight the drivers seat to get it really dialed-in. That won't address wear due to road crowning but will make the car handle better overall and will reduce driver- vs passenger-side wear differential caused by suspension system loading differtial on the front wheels.
---
These specs came from an alignment output (printout from the alignment shop that he sent me, showing the specs) from another forum member, so I don't know for a fact that they are correct...but they are what his alignment shop used for his car (hopefully they used the proper specs). In addition, note that there is a range of values, not an exact spec. Don't get caught up on exact numbers with alignments....being slightly off won't hurt anything.
Camber is -1.5 degrees to 0 degrees
Caster is 6.35 degrees to 7.85 degrees
Toe is -1/16" to 5/32"
My guess is that the actual specs read as follows (same numbers...just that typically they are expressed as a target +/- a tolerance):
Camber ---> -.75 degrees +/-.75 degrees
Caster ---> 7.1 degrees +/-.75 degrees
Toe ---> 3/64 inches +/- 7/64 inches

Camber can cause tire wear, but it is a much less significant contributor than toe. Even though a car may be "to specs", the toe may need adjusted. OCD, I'd recommend you have the alignment tech add about 1/16" of toe-in next time you get aligned...I think that would help a lot. Also there is a concept called "toe out on turns" whereby the front tires change toe settings when turned. As a result, those who turn more will experience more inner edge tire wear. Again the fix IMO is to have toe set more "in" at a base level. See near the end of the article below. Note that toe-out-on-turns is not adjustable, but rather built into the steering knuckle.

The last alignment I had done, they said it was within factory specs... Lol...
Most of the miles on my car are highway miles, so the crown of the road could totally be the cause of the drivers side wearing more.... Never thought of that...

OCD, maybe put up a poll? ...I'd bet most drivers-sides are worn a bit more if mostly highway driving, but could be interesting to see how it goes. I dont even remember how to do a poll -lol.

Ok, I am tired of the insides of the front tires wearing so fast... I am getting these,
https://www.bmrsuspension.com/?page=products&productid=743&superpro=0
Correct front alignment and add camber adjustability to the your 2010-2014 S197 Mustang with Camber Bolts from BMR Suspension. The S197 Mustangs have no factory camber adjustability, and once your car is lowered, this can lead to poor handling and premature tire wear. BMR’s Camber Bolts are forged steel bolts, giving you unrivaled strength and precision. The assembly is completed with heavy-duty nuts and locating washers. The BMR Camber Bolts give you 2 degree of camber adjustability in the front of your S197 Mustang. This allows you to achieve the proper camber settings on lowered vehicles, or more aggressive alignment setting for hardcore handling applications.
BMR Suspension designed the FC001 Camber Bolts for street performance, drag race, and handling applications. Each component of the FC001 assembly is precision forged, giving you the ability to make precise alignment changes. The nut/locating washer design allows for unlimited adjustments without have to use new hardware. Whether you drag race, road race, or simply drive your car on the street, BMR’s FC001 is perfect for any car in need of additional front camber.
BMR Suspension’s FC001 camber bolts are available in a durable black zinc finish for long-lasting good looks. Installation time is about 1 hour. Proudly made in the U.S.A.

Can you post a pic of your tirewear? I can tell you from the pic (maybe take a few from various angles) whether it's caused by alignment. I'd estimate that 80-90% of "edge wear" on front tires is NOT caused by camber, but rather either improper toe settings or toe-out-on-turns (the toe changes on a car when the tires are off center.
First show me the photos. Depending on those...I might suggest you get an alignment check. If the toe setting is correct, then you have a couple choices...one would be to have the technician check the toe-out-on-turns (which is NOT something they normally check). If this indicates it is toed out quite a bit, then it's likely that your driving habits are causing the wear. Another alternative would be to have the toe set "in" a bit more than the specification calls for. You may be asked by the technician to sign a waiver saying you won't hold them responsible for tire wear issues in this case. It doesn't take much...about 1/8" more toe-in can significant decrease inner tire wear.

I had an alignment done when those wheels were put on...
Don't want the same happening to the new ones I just put on my drag radial rims... I might swap the new ones onto my front highway rims, I should have done that right of way... Dufus...

This is classic toe-wear. Camber plates will not fix this.
The tires are toe'd out too far. If you look at my doctored photo, you'll see in the black rectangle there is no "dust" on the tire. Whereas in the red rectangle there is. The black is "lower" than the red, and thus is not even touching the ground as you drove it into the garage. The black and red boxes are in two different "planes" due to scrubbing of the tire.
Do this....and if you do it with your eyes closed it works better. You can probably do it with the tire on the car. First, using the tire I have shown in the doctored photo...place your palm on the inner edge of the tire, starting at the upper part of the tire, and slowly drag your hand downwards...with light pressure. Then, do the same, but start at the bottom and move your hand upwards. I guarantee you that when you do this, you'll feel the tire to be somewhat "smooth" when going downwards, but when going upwards you will feel sharp jagged edges. This is called "feathering" and is caused by improper toe-setting. You may have to repeat this several times to get the feel of it...I did 4-5 alignments a day for 5 years so I got really good at it.
I don't care what the manual says as far as a specification...that toe is too far "out" and causing the wear. You want to request that they check the current toe value, then set it "in" further...perhaps 1/16" to 1/8" further than what it's currently set at...it's a bit of an educated guess as to how much.
Here is a good article that explains it also...

Good luck.

On the Quadravan I actually made a wood jig to measure toe in absolute terms. On a car you'd have to build in a longer offset -- so you measure between the midpoint, height-wise, of the wheel surface nearest the tire, both in front and behind. Toe is approximately half the difference.
Totally agree with Dave not to go by specification. Every shop (including two Ford dealers) was unable to adjust correctly (correctly being what produces even edge wear in and out) and I was getting tired of the expense of their incompetence, so that's when I decided doing it myself was the only way. Made incremental adjustments (as Dave suggests in the other thread) until I found the correct toe setting. Once dialed in, nearly 180K miles and over a half dozen sets of BFG All Terrains later, that setting was still the best. Actually gave the jig to the person (a professional mechanic) I sold QV to -- 26 years after buying it new from his dad.
The Fusion is so perfect tire-wear wise I won't even let the dealer do a free alignment!!! With my tire pressure adjustment (it's just silly for a car with 64/36WD to run same pressure all around) tires just wear so perfectly. The Taurus wagon was pretty darn good too but the Fusion is outstanding.

I got a super great deal when I bought them!! So I was able to sell the wheels and tires for $1000 less than what the rims alone cost new... So he saved the $1000 on rims, plus shipping and waiting time, and got tires with only three 1/4 mile passes on them for free...
I had 2 grand into the rims and tires, I advertised them for 3 grand(still a great deal)... The first guy that came and looked wanted them, and asked if I was negotiable on the price... I said if he brings me 25 one hundred dollar bills, the wheels are his... He picked them up the next day!! He was super happy, and I happily put 500 extra bucks into the mod fund!!

I really like that you can adjust the ride height, my rear springs are adjustable too, so I can dial the whole car in at the height I want!!
68fastback
04-16-2019, 04:59 PM
Yeah ...height adjust can be used to dial-in corner weights for road course as well as compression-rebound for dive control. At the drags you can set compression strong and rebound weak up front and the opposite in the rear to dial in launch weight transfer. There may even be remote (extender cables & mounts) available for the C/R adjusters so you don't have to crawl under to reset for road vs track vs street.
