View Full Version : shorty valve stems

Does anyone know where to get short wheel stems? My True Forged aftermarket wheels have OEM Ford TPMS's in them, and the stems are about a 1/4" too long. They hit the calipers and have loosened the air valve thingee and I lost air pressure in a tire fairly fast after the warning light came on. Good thing I wasn't too far from a garage. The stem does not hit the caliper when up on jacks, which doesn't make sense to me. Does the caliper move when the car is moving or braking? Anyway, I'm on the hunt for shorter stems with TPMS. If I can't find them, I'll just get shorter stems and live with the warning light always on as a last resort.

I don't understand what you are saying?
How are your valve stems hitting your calipers?

The valve stems are inside (middle of) the rims, not near the outside edge.

I would not use the ones TG posted. I would go to your local tire shop. I used to work at one and we carried both short and long ones.

Dave,
I called the local (35 miles away) Pomps tire shop. They said they have short stems, but no TPMS setups. They would sell me the shorties, but will not install them because I have TPMS's installed already. Some kind of federal law that you can not remove/leave out the TPMS if previously installed. If possible, I would like to keep the TPMS installed so I don't have to look at the annoying blinking idiot light all the time.
Thanks TG, for the suggestions.

What does this have to do w the TPMS ?
My car has them strapped to the rim, are yours at the valve?

I agree with TG...not sure how the two are related. Perhaps you can clarify. But, you gotta do what you gotta do.

In 2010 Ford changed the style of TPMS's. The later models are attached to the valve stem with a small screw. I've wondered if the earlier (2007-09) would work. If they did, I would go that route, but don't know. Hence, this thread. Hoping someone would have an answer.

The bigger question would be will the earlier TPM signal work with the later model computer. Might be a different frequency? Perhaps the Ford dealership would know.

Now makes more sense. And good question.
