How many miles on it before first oil change? My F150 is pushing 7K miles right now and my "engine oil life" is still showing over 30% remaining on the Ford "IntelliSystem" or whatever it's called. Seems strange that a FI engine would go 10K before needing an oil change, but my owners manual says that the "IntelliSystem" will let you know when you're due for an oil change.

Same here on the new Mustang. I'm still going to do an oil change early just to the break in metal out of the oil.

I don't trust these long oil intervals on the cars.

Only reason I'm going 7500 mile intervals on the F350 is because it uses 14 quarts of oil and think it can handle it.

Still do about 4000 miles on my gas vehicles since I drive them hard :giggle:

I did a vehicle health report and found out that the oil had 6% oil life yet the truck sait that the oil was ok. This was Tuesday. Yesterday it said change oil soon. Crap It goes from ok to change oil soon. Same with the DEF I guess. Hope there is a fix for this because otherwise there is no way to plain for a $200 oil change. Ya going to the dealer for the first one because I want them to give the truck the once over.

Oil and filter from the Motorcraft rep is about $80 if it makes you feel better. Double that to have someone do it for you, so you're not too far off. :(

It's not any harder than doing a car, just takes 14 quarts though!

And don't let them get you on the fuel filter change, talk to me first!

It was fun using the 4 wheel drive. The locking diff would disengage at 20mpg. What good was that? The truck wasn't that clean by the time i got home. Later in the afternoon the temps were about 35 so snow was melting. It was snowing in the higher elevations. We had a great time though. I was supprised at how well the stock tires worked on the icy roads. i felt the stability control kick in which made me lock in the hubs LOL.

There is one thing I don't like about my truck. It's the tailgate lock. You have to use the key. There isn't a button nor is it connected to power anything. You have to use the key and you have to shut the truck off to unlock it or remember to unlock it if you want to leave the motor run. It's a nice idea to have a lock. It's stupid not to have it power so when you lock or unlock the truck that lock works the same. Crap

If it doesn't require the 'computer' key you could just have a $3 copy made at HD, but that's another key on the chain. I use a keyring that easily separates and have car keys on one half and house keys on the other for similar reasons. Yeah, would be nice if they treated it like a trunk on a car with a button, etc.

Tommy Gun
01-28-2016, 10:01 PM
Then there would be a plug to unplug when you remove the tailgate to load or put in a trailer or etc etc...

To put this in perspective ....most trucks never had a lock...and many end up getting stolen! Really.

I know most foreign trucks didn't have a tailgate lock til last year or year before...

Be greatful Ford put a lock on it...especially F250's F350's...I bet the most stolen tailgate door out there.

I remember a few years back seeing doors missing on a row of trucks at a dealership :nonono:

Bet they all lock them now on car lots.

Yeah, I guess it's a tradeoff ...might not be practical for the reasons TG mentioned. ...the dupe key on a split key ring is simple and inexpensive. This is similar to the one I have (http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/321790713835). I like this type because you can easily separate with one hand (whether for home or trunk lock) while the ignition key is still in the ignition. They also last a long time and are cheap.

Have you gone into your menu settings and looked at custom programming your locks? Don't know about the F-250s, but my F-150 you can change some of the auto lock properties to be "custom". Not sure about my tailgate, I know it locks but when I hit my fob, door switch or kill the engine and crack the drivers door my tailgate always unlocks.

We did about 1,300 total trip about 1,000 miles towing and over all MPG was 11.2. Went over the grapevine then over by Pasadena then the 10 freeway over to almost palm springs then turned on to route 62. Diesel was about $2.38 a gallon there. Here i got it for $1.93. we used 54 gallons on the trip about $325 worth. I am so glad I spent the extra money on the diesel. I never experienced any power loss at altitude. The trailer weighs about 12,000 loaded

I suspect that limit is due to springs and tires capacity. Check the specs on a higher payload, including gear ratio.

There is a sticker in the door that doesn't allow you to change the numbers. You can add spring and even bigger axles but you cant change the sticker. I wasn't able to get the bigger payload because i was having a hard time getting the exact truck I wanted and I couldn't order a 15 at the time so I had to take this one. I wanted the incentives and a 16 didn't have any at the beginning of the run. This truck works great and I dont miss what I couldn't get.

I did some research, the only difference I find between the 10k and 11+k capacity is the springs, same single tire rear axle, probably the same tires. My guess that there is a difference from a VLT in some states. Can't be that much difference.

68fastback
02-18-2016, 02:55 AM
VLT?

Is diff gearing the same, 'nut? Might just be springs (like you said) and likely tweaked tune settings for engine and/or trans program.

In the new truck it's available with even higher than 11k but that's a different/lighter beastie.

I wonder how long it will take for Ford to adopt Magna-ride for the trucks (GM just intro'd it for some GMCs like Sierra.

Carnut
02-18-2016, 02:58 AM
VLT = Vehcile Lieu Tax or Vehicle License Tax, usually based on vehicle cost and payload capacity (for trucks).

68fastback

Ah, ok ...we pay sales tax based on sale price, but registration based on load rating ...pretty cheap tho ...typical light-duty p/up is about $85 for three years, last I looked ...but we do pay state income tax, unlike NV/FL/etc

Getting ready to go on our journey. Checked the registration on all the cars and the truck was going to be due while we are on vacation. So I went to DMV.gov to pay for my tags and I almost fainted. $675 was all they wanted. Thats almost as much as my payment. :crap:

Finishd doing one wheel on the 5th wheel only 3 more to go. Instead of cleaning the bearings I am replacing them because I think the ones in there are cheap and replacing them on the road is to much work. Still have to wash the thing LOL

If my experience has taught me anything, you'll forget something and only remember 50 miles from home.

Got the 5th wheel washed up yesterday. It looks very nice now. Now I have to wash the truck and that should be it. its amazing how much stuff i got in the trailer. Lots of details to take care of. I have good neighbors to look after the yard and water our house plants.
Arggggh

I had to re register my car today... Registration here is 80 bucks a year... I also had to pay off all the photo radar tickets I got with it last summer, 800 bucks worth... LOL!! One was 400 bucks... Doing 50 over the limit...

I told the lady that I always wait to pay them at the last possible moment I can, just out of spite... She laughed and asked if I wanted to register my car for two years, then I have an extra year to hold off paying any tickets I get this summer!!

So I did, it was cheaper too!! :Winning:

Actually that's not so bad -- at first I was thinking that was just the reg fee. 50-over in NY and they take likely your license on the spot. 15+ over costs about $385 between fine, fees and penalties and if not paid on time (in court or mailed within 30 days) a warrant is issued for arrest. Sounds like CA just wants the money.

Sucks they do this, but better than going on your record and adding points like here. :(

Photo radar sucks.

Minnesota Supreme Court voted it down as illegal. :mob:

That's pretty cool!! Nice design too!

The factory offers ones that are built-in on the side and tuck under nicely too ...tried them out at the auto show several years ago.
