Breaking News: White House Responds to Racecar Petition.
Support for Congressional Bill More Important Than Ever—ACT NOW! (http://click.message.sema.org/?qs=0cdb4705def4ecfa0e77b45892660c1cfdb282c6a07bd9 a5572c555013a45af57bdb5f609a633fb5)

Earlier this year, the White House was flooded with nearly 170,000 signatures from racing enthusiasts and industry stakeholders concerned about an over-reaching regulation from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The Obama Administration’s “We the People Team” recently responded, noting that the EPA is still considering the proposed standards and that the issue is still in review. But we need to keep the pressure on Washington.

While the battle regarding the EPA proposal continues, the U.S. Congress has introduced the Recognizing the Protection of Motorsports (RPM) Act, legislation which – if enacted into law – will ensure that street vehicles can continue to be modified for the race track. Even if the EPA removes the provision to prohibit the conversion of motor vehicles into racecars from its regulation, the RPM Act is the only way to guarantee that the practice of modifying street vehicles into dedicated racecars is protected not just today, but in the future as well.

Many legislators and government officials have voiced support for the RPM Act. However, many elected officials are still undecided. It is crucial that the entire racing community continues to send letters to their congressional lawmakers demanding support for the RPM Act.

Every letter counts!

Congress has now brought the legislation forward but the White House is still having the EPA push back, yet this bill is the only way to protect the rights of vehicle owners who want to turn their vehicles LEGALLY into dedicated track cars. Still needs your support -- 170,000 have signed on (including myself and others I know and some here too) but it isn't a done deall by any means. The EPA is saying it's not necessary because there's presently nothing preventing someone doing so, but the only way to make sure that remains the case (i.e. removes the EPA's ability to simply decide to prevent such conversions) is to have be made into law -- the Recognizing the Protection of Motorsports (RPM) Act. The link below makes it very easy to do that... (https://www.votervoice.net/SEMA/campaigns/45394/respond)

Earlier this year, nearly 170,000 racing enthusiasts and industry stakeholders rallied to tell the White House to stop an overreaching regulation from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The Obama Administration’s “We the People Team” recently responded, noting that the EPA is still considering the proposed standards and that the issue is still in review. But the battle to save our racecars and the performance industry isn’t over. Now, it’s time to tell the U.S. Congress to protect our industry from government overreach.

As the EPA continues to consider its proposal, the U.S. Congress has introduced the Recognizing the Protection of Motorsports (RPM) Act, legislation which—if enacted into law—will ensure that street vehicles can continue to be modified for the race track. Even if the EPA removes the provision to prohibit the conversion of motor vehicles into racecars from its regulation, the RPM Act is the only way to guarantee that the practice of modifying street vehicles into dedicated racecars is protected now and in the future.

The future of motorsports rides on this legislation. We need you to contact your legislators and tell them to support the RPM Act.

Today, SEMA President and CEO Chris Kersting released the following reaction to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) announcement that it would withdraw its proposed regulation on modified racecars:

"We want to thank Congress for pushing EPA to withdraw an ill-conceived proposal. However, confusion reigns: the agency continues to assert new-found authority under the Clean Air Act to regulate modification of vehicles for use in competition. This means that those converting and racing competition vehicles, and the parts and services industries that support them, do so under new EPA policy that considers the activity illegal. Only clarifying legislation, such as that offered under the RPM Act, will confirm that such activity is legal and beyond the reach of future EPA regulations. The racing industry and public need a long-term solution to eliminate any uncertainty regarding how the Clean Air Act is interpreted."

While the EPA has withdrawn a proposal that would have prohibited the conversion of street vehicles into race cars used exclusively for the track, the agency continues to assert authority under the Clean Air Act to regulate the modification of vehicles used for competition.

“What the RPM Act does is expressly forbid the EPA from undertaking a regulation under the Clean Air Act on the motorsports industry. That’s all it does… My goal is to have the RPM Act voted on in the House of Representatives before the end of the summer.” — Rep. Patrick McHenry

So far, 96 members of congress have co-sponsored the RPM Act, but the number needs to increase in order to help the bill move forward. SEMA members can help. Write your lawmakers (http://www.sema.org/RPMAct) and urge them to co-sponsor this bill and protect the future of motorsports today!

If you’ve already written to your local representative and your business wants to take further action, contact [email protected] today.
