Ford Wins Le Mans!

No. 68 Ford Chip Ganassi Racing Ford GT of Sébastien Bourdais, Joey Hand and Dirk Müller takes victory in LM GTE Pro category
Victory comes exactly 50 years on from Ford’s 1-2-3 victory at Le Mans in 1966
No. 69 Ford GT finishes on the podium in third place
The Ford vs. Ferrari battle is rekindled at Le Mans

LE MANS, France -- The No. 68 Ford GT of Sébastien Bourdais (FRA), Joey Hand (US) and Dirk Müller (GER) crossed the finish line at Le Mans at three o’clock on Sunday, as the overall GT winner of the 2016 Le Mans 24 Hours. The No. 69 Ford GT of Ryan Briscoe (AUS), Scott Dixon (NZ) and Richard Westbrook (GB) joined the winners on the podium after scoring third place. The Nos. 66 and 67 Ford GTs finished in fourth and ninth places, respectively.

“This is an historic moment for the Ford Motor Company,” said Bill Ford, executive chairman, Ford Motor Company. “We dared to dream that we could return to Le Mans, 50 years after the incredible 1966 win, and take on the toughest competition in the world. The pride we all felt when the Ford GT crossed the line at Le Mans is indescribable. The team that designed, built and raced the Ford GT has worked tirelessly to bring us to this result and I am proud of each and every one of them. The Ford Chip Ganassi Racing team demonstrated the spirit of Ford, that of innovation, determination and true teamwork. We cherish our history and heritage, but today we made history again and I couldn't be more proud.”

First unveiled to the media at Le Mans last year, the Ford GT’s Le Mans victory comes 395 days after the car turned a wheel for the first time on May 20, 2015, at Calabogie Motorsports Park in Canada. A Herculean effort from the Ford Chip Ganassi team has transformed the car into a Le Mans winner in just over one year.

“Building a new car and racing it at Le Mans is a monumental task,” commented Mark Fields, president and chief executive officer, Ford Motor Company. “We took it on and we conquered the biggest challenge in sportscar racing: the Le Mans 24 Hours. It has been incredible to share this event with our dealers, owners, employees, sponsors and guests who are all bursting with pride at being part of the Ford family. Every manufacturer in the GTE Pro class fought with everything they had in the best competitive spirit, and we are thrilled to have played our part in this incredible race.”

After a titanic battle with the No. 82 Ferrari, the No. 68 Ford GT took the lead for the final time in the 20th hour of the race. Hand was behind the wheel on the three occasions that the Ford passed the Ferrari, rekindling a 50-year-old rivalry between the two car manufacturers.

“It’s a big deal to come back here 50 years after the Ford win in 1966,” said Hand. “We said we wanted to win but to actually do it is huge. This team has come so far in a short space of time. They all worked hard, right through Christmas and New Year and gave us a race car that we can race hard. We drove like it was a sprint race for 24 hours. I’ve won a lot of races and this is a big one. I’m honoured to be part of this programme. I’m a red, white and blue guy so to be part of the Ford family, where they treat you like their own, is a great place to be.”

This victory is particularly sweet for Bourdais who was born within sight of Tertre Rouge. The Frenchman had competed at Le Mans 10 times previously but this is his first win.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling to be able to make this happen,” said Bourdais. “There was so much effort, so much emotion, and to be the one that wins the trophy to give to the Ford family and everyone involved is very special. Everything aligned for us today -- the history, the Ferrari/Ford battle, 50 years on and the Ford family being here. To come out on top of all that is an amazing feeling.”

The No. 66 Ford GT, raced by Billy Johnson (US), Stefan Mücke (GER) and Olivier Pla (FRA) was in contention for a top result during the race’s infancy but a small electrical problem put paid to their attack. Such is the pace of the Le Mans 24 Hours, one extra moment in the pits is all it takes to be out of the running.
The No. 67 Ford GT of Marino Franchitti (GB), Andy Priaulx (GB) and Harry Tincknell (GB) suffered from a gearbox issue at the start of the race so they had to play catch up for the full 24 hours, coming home in ninth place.

With his 175th victory as a team owner, Chip Ganassi becomes the only owner in history to win the Indianapolis 500, Daytona 500, Brickyard 400, Rolex 24 At Daytona, 12 Hours of Sebring and Le Mans 24 Hours.

The No. 66 Ford GT earns maximum FIA World Endurance Championship points from this event, which fires up the competition for the remainder of the WEC season. The IMSA Ford Chip Ganassi Racing team is flying high all the way back to the US for the next round of the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship at Watkins Glen on July 3.

...just like the moon shot :spitcopy:

Pretty amazing what they were able to accomplish in about 13 months. What I like most is that Ferrari also stepped-up -- the new 488 was way faster than the Vettes ...but Ford was faster still. It woud not have been such a huge win if the two class-leading Vettes came in ahead of the Ferrari and behind the Ford, even tho the Vettes have won dozens of time and at virtyually every track on the circuit in GT Pro class. Kinda like a two-fer win

Link in Ford Media News announcement below. In the click-through credits, Mose Nowland is Ford's legendary engine engineer who joined Ford in 1955, worked on the development of many legendary engines including development of original 427, including the 1966 GT40 Mark-II 427 that whipped Ferrari, the 427 Cammer, Ford's small blocks, Ford's FR9 Nascar engine, Ford's NHRA Pro-Stock motor, the Boss-500 top fuel billet motor -- just about any major Ford engine you can think of Mose Nowland worked on before he retired from Ford in 2012 after 57 years. (I believe his dad joined Ford in 1928 and worked for Henry Sr. on development of Ford's super-secret Flathead V8 project in 1930 that was first released in the 1932 Ford.)

DEARBORN, Mich., June 15, 2017 – The Ford GT race car’s triumphant return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans and simultaneous development of the Ford GT supercar are highlighted in the new documentary, “The Return,” available now as the company’s first film on Amazon Prime Video.

Emmy Award-winning director Erich Joiner brings audiences the behind-the-scenes view of the fiercely competitive struggle to get the new Ford GT race car ready to race at Le Mans in 2016 – 50 years after Ford’s historic 1-2-3 1966 win.

“To win a race, you have to have incredible commitment,” said Raj Nair, Ford executive vice president and president of North America. “This film captures the teamwork and challenges the team encountered and overcame living up to the Ford GT’s iconic heritage.”

“The Return” features never-before-seen footage showing the challenge Ford Motor Company set for itself in developing an all-new Ford GT, which both honored its storied history on the race track and shattered modern expectations about what a supercar can be.

"As a director and an avid racing enthusiast, I set out to make a passion project of a movie,” said Joiner. “I was able to shoot things that very few people ever get to witness about building a world-class race car and program. And then putting this new car and team up against the best in the world at the Le Mans 24 Hours. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience I will never forget.”

Enthusiasts get exclusive access to the side-by-side development of the GT race car and production car through the eyes of those involved during its fast and intense development. World-class drivers, racing experts and others bring life to the most treacherous, high-stakes endurance race in the world, while Ford family members link the race’s significance to Henry Ford launching the company on the track more than 100 years ago.

“The Return” is available for free download on Amazon Prime starting the eve of the 2017 24 Hours of Le Mans, where four Ford GT race cars will return again to fight for the most coveted trophy in endurance racing. The green flag drops on Saturday.

Jun 18, 2017 | Le Mans, FranceFord Chip Ganassi Racing Grabs Last Gasp Second Place in GTE Pro at Le Mans 24 Hours

#67 Ford GT takes second in GTE Pro at the Le Mans 24 Hours in thrilling finish
Marks second year in a row that Ford Chip Ganassi Racing has made the podium at the legendary event
The podium earned the #67 team double points toward the 2017 FIA World Endurance Championship title

LE MANS, France, June 18, 2017 – The #67 Ford Chip Ganassi Racing Ford GT of Andy Priaulx (GB), Harry Tincknell (GB), and Pipo Derani (BRA) grabbed the runner-up spot in the 2017 Le Mans 24 Hours at the end of the final lap. Last minute struggles for the second-placed Corvette gave Tincknell the opportunity to pounce and take the place just as the chequered flag fell.

In a door-to-door battle of manufacturers through the full 24-hours, the #67 crew that won the FIA World Endurance Championship season-opener at Silverstone proved their mettle once again with strong strategy and an incredible effort from the entire team.

“That was an amazing race,” Priaulx said. “It was a faultless race with faultless pit stops. These guys (the Ford Chip Ganassi Racing team) deserve a medal as yet again they have risen to the challenge. It was a gruelling race; we had to fight through every lap, every pit stop, every moment of the 24 hours. Everything had to be perfect and it was. Watching Harry at the end was nail-biting so when we saw the Corvette appear in Harry’s sights we knew he would get the job done and take second.”

All four Ford GTs finished the Le Mans 24 Hours, which was one of the most brutal 24-hour races at the Circuit de la Sarthe for many years. Last year’s race-winning #68 Ford GT came home in sixth place, followed by the #69 car in seventh and the #66 in tenth place.

“Wow, what a race,” said Dave Pericak, global director, Ford Performance. “It was a tough one, but everyone stuck with it. This proves that you have to stick with it right until the very end. To take second place on our second time here is amazing. First is always best but we’ll take this because it’s a great result for this team. It was huge for us in the WEC championship so it’s not just a great finish, but it’s also great for the championship we want to win this year.”

All four of the team’s Ford GTs showed promise early, leading laps at the 14km/8.5-mile Circuit de la Sarthe. Then, as dusk fell, the challenges came quickly and with little warning.

The #66 Ford GT was leading the category four hours in with Billy Johnson (US) behind the wheel after Stefan Mücke (GER) started eighth, but 10 hours later a rear suspension problem sent their team-mate Olivier Pla (FRA) into the gravel and the #66 to the back of the pack.

The #68 struggled in qualifying and lined up 12th on the grid. Although it led briefly thanks to a charge by Dirk Müller (GER) and showed pace, a series of pit lane challenges kept the team from showing its real promise.

“Congratulations to the #67 crew for a fantastic second-place finish,” Müller said. “We know how it feels to make it on to the podium. It’s a good feeling. We were hit with so many things during the race. Joey did a good job and definitely Tony Kanaan. (Adding him to the lineup) was such a rush. We arrived here on Tuesday morning and from that moment on it all went so fast. He gave everything for us and we made a good team.”

Kanaan, who competed at this year’s Rolex 24 At Daytona with Tincknell and Priaulx, made an easy transition into the car at Le Mans.

Of the two full-time IMSA SportsCar Championship cars (#68 and #69), it was #69 that really showed promise going into race day. It qualified highest among the Ford Chip Ganassi Racing Ford GTs in fifth place and although starting driver Richard Westbrook reported understeer, still appeared to be a podium contender. It wasn’t long, though, before the #69 had to pit to fix a tail lamp issue – a problem that would resurface again the next day and hinder the progress of Westbrook, Ryan Briscoe and Scott Dixon.

The next race for the Ford Chip Ganassi Racing team is in two weeks’ time at Watkins Glen in the U.S.
