FORD ADDS GOOGLE MAPS ‘SEND TO SYNC’ SERVICE TO BEAM DRIVING DIRECTIONS INTO CAR; NO EXTRA COST

http://media.ford.com/images/10031/sendtosync.jpg

Ford adds Google Maps to its ‘Send to SYNC’ feature, allowing drivers to send destinations from Google Maps to their Ford vehicle through the cloud-based SYNCŪ Traffic, Directions & Information (TDI) app
Drivers download destination information into the vehicle via their Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones; the information will be processed into audible turn-by-turn directions, eliminating the need to bring printed maps into the car and helping drivers keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road
‘Send to SYNC’ launches later this month and will be available for existing 2010-11 models equipped with SYNC TDI; no extra hardware, software updates or costs are required

Note: this new Google-directed free Nav support is an added alternative to the already free Ford-provided free turn-by-turn basic Nav support that comes with all newer Sync-equipped Fords and requires no upgrades or new hardware for SyncTDI-equipped vehicles.

Interesting.

If there is no fee there may be Google ADs, which may be intrusive.

Do you know if the initiative is Google Ad supported Dan?

I like this idea. If I can map a route on my PC then be able to send it to the sync that would be cool.

I'll let you all know in about 15 days when I pick up my new '11. I have a Motorola Droid cell phone and I use Google maps a lot on the phone. I'll have to do a write up on how the two work together.

Dunno, I'm thinking not based on earlier info on how the set-up works, but that's a total guess since I can see the motivation to do that. My impression is it's like the google 'directions' from google-maps being used in place of the freebie turn-by-turn nav database directions used as the default with the updated Sync (last year). If using Ford's Sync facility it takes the nav/server (voice-directed turn-by-turn freebie ...not a full NAV system), about 35 seconds of cell-phone connect time (transparent to you; you just verbally request a trip route via Sync) to set up the trip, as I recall, and pokes several servers/databases (route, traffic, weather(?), etc) located in various parts of the US via Ford's Sync network to 'assemble/optimize' the route directions (my impression from the info provided back then). I think the google directions are just an alternate for the route DB portion but unclear how they're substituted/integrated into the set-up process. Possibly the google directions are stored via an online Sync app, then accessed from the car to integrate than information into the set-up process (dunno). Also unclear to me if any advertising is or might be part of it. Ford had provided a more detailed diagram and video on how the whole Sync nav setup works (when the second-gen Sync was announced last year) but I just looked in several places and can't seem to find it now (I posted it on SM back then).

You can already do this with Google Maps, but you need a Benz, BMW or Volvo Car with Factory Nav System
