View Full Version : Exhaust upgrade opinions wanted...

Is it worth it to upgrade it with a stock blower? I will be doing a Whipple upgrade in about six months or so, but I could do the exhaust earlier...

I am thinking long tubes, cat less X pipe, 3" tubing all the way back... Not sure about mufflers yet... I hate the tinny rap sound, love the old school muscle car rumble...

I know I will lose some boost but will I pick up some horsepower?

I'm no expert, but here's what I heard:
- headers will allow the engine to breath better and, as you said, reduce boost because of less back pressure
- you won't get much of a power boost, especially with the stock blower - but with the larger blowers, again, you'll allow them to breath better and get that power with the least boost. However, I know KB does NOT recommend using headers, so take that as you will.
- install is a PITA!! You think you got charged a lot for your simple suspension mods?? :faint: Better take out a second mortgage to pay for the headers install. The full 3" system sounds sick - but can be LOUD!

If you plan to upgrade to a larger blower then the LT's are a must no matter what KB says about it. ( I think he doesn't like them because he doesn't know how to adjust the tune to make it work with the LT's) With a blower car it never hurts to have a large exhaust and can only help to reduce combustion temps by reducing boost and increasing air flow.
Of course the biggest benifits are realized with the bigger blowers as compared to the smaller stock blower.

Yeah, what birdy said. Oh, and which whipple you goingwith? Will it fit under the stock hood? If not, may make sense to hold off on the headers and do it at the same time.

I'm very happy with my shorty FRPP Ceramic Coated headers and JBA Hi-Flow Cats combo I'm running, the flow is great and it sounds Nasty. The Shorty's are a P.I.T.A. to install but not as much as long tubes.

The bottom line is your stock headers are very heavy too and really belong on the BBQ in your back yard, not the Shelby. JMO

Getting weight off the front of GT500 is beneficial.

I noticed FRPP is now offering a Long Tube too.

Notice the difference between the long tubs and the cast iron sausage shown in the bottom of the pic which are the stock headers.

Here's a good article on the header swap.

I heard that once you hit 600RWHP it is a must to change the headers. The stock ones just don't flow as good as the aftermarket ones and it holds heat which is not good on these cars.

I like those FRPP long tubes....................nice with the turndowns. I wonder how I could fool the emmisions test with that on.

BTW, I received a coupon for 20% Jet Hot coating (when I was considering picking up a ridiculously cheap set of ARH 1 7/8 long tubes, I got a quote from Jet Hot for their 2000 Black coating). If you're interested, I can pass it along (physical coupon, not a code).

I do plan on getting a trufiber kr style hood... Maybe I will get the hood first, then collect parts and do the supercharger and headers at the same time...

Will take you for a boot when I come down so you can hear what the LT with a full 3" off road sounds like....nice rumble that is not obscene when just cruising that sounds close to open headers when you are on it without the tin sound some setups have (or the annoying glasspack popping decel sound some setups have).....I did the exhaust when I did the pulley, CAI and tune.

As far as power goes there is a pickup; it is not huge compared to other mods (i.e. 15-25 HP) but like others have said; once you enter the 600+ club you are going to want them for sure

If the weather smartens up tomorrow I will take some video for you to at least give you the idle and unloaded rev sounds

EDIT: one other thing to keep in mind...if you are in the serial # range that fits for the clutch TSB get it done before putting headers on...they are a bear of an install that you don't want to have to do twice....or even better...swing a deal with Karl to put them on at the same time

If we werent sc'd then when witching to headers we might of actually lost hp. On NA cars its more prevelent.
With sc'd cars it will help but only more gains are seen when you are running higher boost.
Our stock 8# isnt much but still should see some modest gain IMO

The biggest restriction in the stock Ford exhaust system is far and away from the Cats. If you did nothing else but change to hi flow cats performance and efficency would increase dramatically.

This is a true statement CD .I would say if you are planning to upgrade the blower/hp a freer flowing exhaust is a good foundation to build upon going forward with a blower car for sure.

I think like Birdy said...........main blockage is the stock cats. My guess is that they'll flow pretty well for ya if you open up the cats a bit with some hi flows. I've been in the same place as you.....just not ready to spend the $$ on LT's while there's so much more to do.

I put Magnaflow highflow cats and true-flow x-pipe with Bullitt mufflers. I definitely wouldnt' recommend the mufflers. I get a snapping sound when I punch it. I'm guessing there is too much back pressure in the mufflers, which is causing this snapping sound. I wanted a muffler to go with my highflow cats that wouldn't piss off the neighbours. What made me try the bullitts out, is that I really liked the mufflers tips. But when I drive the car reasonably they sound great, but I hardly drive the car reasonably, lol.

Loud is good, gives people fair warning to get out of the way!! I thought about high flow cats but figured why spend the extra money when I don't have too...

One word: CORSA

You will get an exhaust set up with the Hi-Flows that is HOOLIGAN when punched but docile enough to come home late at night and not have a neighbour waiting with a BAT. :trouble:

I've highsided TWICE at over 120MPH on the same corner at Shannonville, these http://www.araiamericas.com/default.aspx?pageid=60 are the reason I'm not eating through a straw and can tuck my kids in at night, no doubt.

Never had anything else on my cone for over 30 years. Simply the best Helmets in the world, period. They are not cheap but what is your head worth?

The auto helmets are here...http://www.araiamericas.com/default.aspx?pageid=57#/helmets/auto, I use the GP Jet Open Face for cars.
