Right now I'm working on getting the rear view camera installed in place of the trunk key lock. I have the camera wired in and connected to the head unit, I just need to run the lead through the cabin and mount the camera. I've been researching it and I think I'll be able to get it done this weekend.

After that, I'm going to install a trunk release button inside the glove box and replace the rear view mirror with one that has compass, external temp and homelink. I got the idea for both of these on TS.

The trunk switch mod looks really easy and you can probably pick up an OEM switch for less than the SHR kit.

The mirror installation will be a little more difficult, but I should be able to tie into the current mirror's power lines and will only have to run the temp sensor line out to the front of the car. I've missed having an external temp display ever since I bought the car, and the homelink remote will be nice to have.

It's the Pioneer ND-BC4. Sealed unit, can be mounted externally.

Got the camera installed today, turned out really nicely. Full wide-angle FOV from the rear bumper.

Just after I finished that, the FedEx guy dropped off the new rear view mirror. Looks great, came with wiring harness and external temp sensor. Hopefully I can get it installed without busting the windshield. lol

Will the Camera work when you want or only when you put the vehicle in reverse?

If you do a by-pass mod on the deck it will work all the time.

It switches on automatically in reverse, and you can set the nav display to "camera view" for normal driving, where ~ 3/4ths of the screen is the rear camera view and 1/4 is the map.

No, it doesn't. Some of the bullet cameras sold on ebay claim to have guide lines, but I haven't seen them 1st hand.

Had to move it to get the full FOV.

Installing the new rear view mirror with compass, ext. temp and homelink today.

So far I've installed the temp sensor and run the cabling for the sensor through the wheel well and into the cabin. I've also pulled the passenger side A pillar cover, the passenger sun visor and the center lighting console. From there I was able to completely disconnect the short wire harness going to the stock mirror and remove it.

Had to pull the radiator cover, front passenger side wheel and the rear shield in the front passenger wheel well. Clipped the sensor to the top of the frame in front of the radiator, right next to the hole for one of the radiator fastener covers. This placed the sensor right at the top of the grille, with plenty of fresh air flow. In the wheel well there is a large grommet with a big wire bundle passing through it. The grommet has an unused nipple for additional wiring, so I clipped the nipple and fished the cable through with a wire coat hanger.

Now I need to run the new wiring harness through the headliner and down the passenger A pillar to the kick panel. At that point I'll connect the temp sensor connector to the harness and wire the power wires to the fuse box. From the "how to" I linked in the root post in this thread, slot 5 in the fuse box is switched power, slot 9 is constant power (I'm going to verify this with my multimeter before making the connections though). The wiring harness is already fused, I just need a couple of "tap a circuit" connectors to plug into the fuse box.

I'll get everything wired and working today, but I'll have to pay a technician to pop the old mirror off the windshield. I'm afraid I'll break the windshield. :doh2:

The wiring is complete and neatly tucked away, the interior is put back together.

I smoke checked the new mirror and it works as advertised. The temp in the garage when I plugged the mirror in was 102° F.

I'll take another look at getting the old mirror off and the new one on, but I'll probably end up paying a professional to do that.

Nothing to see at this point really, it's just wiring hidden away under various panels until I get the mirror mounted and plugged in.

Took the car to a glass shop on Monday morning to have the stock mirror removed. ~ 30 seconds after the tech started working I heard a loud pop and saw the mirror go flying as a giant crack grew across the windshield. Nice.

At any rate, the windshield was replaced with an OEM windshield (no cost to me) and the mirror went on today. The old windshield had some small pits from rocks/gravel anyway, so I wasn't horribly upset about having to replace it. All's well that ends well.
