View Full Version : 2017 F150 mods

Keeping this simple. No engine/performance mods. No suspension mods. Wheels are fine.
First one is utilitarian - thoughts on floor mats? Had wanted vinyl floors, but this truck has carpet so want to keep them looking nice.
Everyone talks about WeatherTech for the fit, but seems like there are other ones out there that have the "laser fit" style too.

I have the Weather Tech in the Fusion ...very nice fit -- perfect!
Hunted around and eventually got them on Amazon about 20% cheaper than from Weather Tech direct.
Yeah, they do have a major competitor now ...can't remember the name ...but the prices were similar and Weather Tech's reviews were great, so I went with that.
What's nice about the deep molded (like Weather Tech) is they are easy to clean. Just clip them to the wall at the spray-wash place and have at it -- easy peasy. Rigid enough to smack them against the wall and knock off most of the water and still just 'soft' enough that your feet don't slip on them when you try to adjust your position on the seat.
Another mod I really like is the window vents ...so you can leave the window open a inch or two and get no rain inside. Put those on the Ranger. ALso put molded semi-rigid mud-flaps on the Ranger ...great mod to keep body clean when off-road. The F150 sport may already have these from the factory?

Hate the look of window vents (sorry), but mod #2 will be mud flaps.

...even this kind or window vent? ...tho I definitely don't like some of his other mods ...like the roof-high air breather :haha:
The ones I have are translucent but smoke-tinted.

I have Husky floor liners and they are ware out already Whether tech in the SHO and they are still fine. Wheel well liners are nice to have Love mine. Mud flaps go on first and I got mine at Ford.

Don't like the carpet liners myself, too slippery. We have small bath carpets that match the carpet in our truck. Cheap and easy to pull out and shake out if dirty, can also throw them in the wash if need be.
Mud flaps from Ford only. Right size and right fit.
Door vents a must if ever parking outside to keep the heat out of the inside.
Also a nice fitting/easy to use windshield visor if ever parked outside or in a parking lot.

I had the window vents on my CRV. There are two general types. One sticks on the paint with two-sided tape...I'd never do that. The others insert into the window channel...that's what I had. For the most part they worked well, but on occasion, when using the auto-up feature, the window would come back down...sensing a binding. THis is noted in the installation instructions. You can minimize this by putting something slippery on the insert before install...like a wax or some type of nanofiber chemical.
I was able to leave my windows down about 2-3" even when I knew it would rain...I loved it for that reason.

The red one that says fabric.
Use it on any carpet or cloth.
It's the cheapest and at Walmart or Home Depot.
Use it all the time, never even seen the first two cans before, the Auto is just to get more money out of you. Lol

I've joined 2 F150 sites, a thread on one showed an owner putting pads on his interior trim to stop the seat belt from damaging the trim when he let go of the seat belt. I am really careful letting the belt go in my 14 for the same reason, decided there was a better way to handle it, as this will be my new D/D.

The guides that I bought will keep the seat belt from retracting any further back than the headrest, it won't be able to hit the trim panel. I'll post a pic after the install, which will be late Aug. !!

Next mod is also functionally needed.
Even though it's only a 4x2, step up height is just high enough that I want some running boards/nerf bars.
First truck years ago had stainless steel tube-style bars. Really liked them - easy to keep clean, no rust (which it seems most of the painted ones eventually had) and sturdy.
Not sure those will look good on the 2017 which has no chrome/bare metal (bumpers etc) - the Sport model has body colored painted bumpers.
So... I think black ones will blend in well with the truck, but still not sure about long-term durability. Are the new ones more durable?
Like this...

Black should be much cheaper.

..and the tubular/oval ones that have the rubber/plastic inserts eventually rust out around the inserts ...some of the Explorers had those. I refurb'd Jan's son's when they started looking ratty after only a few years. Black-anodized alloy might be good if anyone makes them, otherwise those flat diamond-tread black-painted steel ones in the pic you posted -- maybe with the bottom surface Rhino-lined like TG suggested -- might work well?
Also, Art installed a pull-out step back behind the cab for easier bed-access. I like how his works better than the factory ones Ford was using a couple years ago (and still may use) ...pulls out and retracts easier than Ford's design yet 'hides' equally well.

Seems the stainless have lifetime warranties - the "chrome" and black ones usually have 2-5 year warranties (cheaper steel I'd assume).

I think stainless should be fine. The Explorer had powder-coated tubular steel with some kind of long hard rubber or plastic step pads. The powder coat would just blister and peel away from the steel all along where water gets trapped at the edges of the step pads.

Those mats really look nice Joe ...look softer/more-flexible than the Weather-Tech. I also like how they lap-over the carpet edge to force wetness/debris onto the door sill itself ...Weather Tech doesn't do that.

They're the 20" optional Sport wheels from a guy that pulled them off at 300 miles. They don't have the TPMS or tires, but at only $450 for the set it's a great deal. Just not sure how I like the look on a RED truck. Here's a pic that I found on the net...

Looks like argent maybe? ...which is very neutral. Does it tie into similar accents on the truck?
I like tie-ins but ultimately what matters is if you like the look.

My Husky floor liners are ware out. They were trash in the first year. Hope yours last longer. I like the wheels but remember that tires for 20's are more expensive than 18's.

...and at correct pressures will ride harder and if not checked often and get just a few pounds low are far more prone to bad road or pot-hole damage than 18s. So depends on how you will be using the truck too.
If I went to 20s I'd go to larger height tires (similar tire profile series as the 18s assuming there's adequate clearance) than Ford would put on those 20s -- factory always tends to keep rolling diameter similar so programming can be the same regardless of wheels they offer and only change it for final drive ratio.
That way you gain a bit of mileage (larger diameter), keep the ability to safely air-down a bit if off pavement (larger profile than Ford would put on 20s), and preserve resistance to pothole damage. If you go that route you'd have to flash the programming to compensate for the overall diameter change so speedo will be right, but OEMs notoriously under-rate the ratio on trucks to the max permitted under Fed law (which I think is 4% on cars but dunno on trucks since the tires vary more -- I've seen up to 7% on trucks of friends), so you may find no correction is needed even when preserving the profile ratio on the larger 20s.
For example, on the Ranger I'm running oversize tires but final ratio relative to speedo is actually now dead-on b/c factory had it almost 9% under! Some highway driving with a portable GPS will tell you your true speed vs what speedo says so you can decide how much more tire profile ratio will fit within the factory 'error' without having to reprogram anything.

The wheels that came on my Sport model are silver painted 17's.
I'm fine with them... but that Mod bug has bit me hard again. :banghead:
I told Mrs G that this was just a plain work truck. No mods unless they were functional - ie: spray bed liner, floor mats, mud flaps etc.
She's gonna keel me if she finds new wheels in the barn... or on the truck! :rollingpin:

Joe, so those wheels you are considering are also silver-ish like the ones on your truck? ...but a shiny silver and 20s? Hard to tell from the earlier pics what color and finish they are.

Anyone able to 3D print in ABS for me?
This would work perfect as the stock phone holder area is too small for my iPhone 7+ (which this mod is for).

Guy walks into a hardware store in winter.
Guy: Do you have snow shovels?
Clerk: Yes, they're over here.
Guy: How much?
Clerk: $18
Guy: $18? Bill's hardware down the street sells them for $12
Clerk: Why don't you buy one down there?
Guy: They are out of them.
Clerk: Well, when we're out of them, we also sell them for $12

Oh... so you can "print" in various qualities. I see now.
Don't need anything perfect.
But it must be ABS - the usual/normal material (PLA?) I guess can melt in the temperatures that a truck interior can reach in the summer.
Wonder what colors Don has? :look:

Some printers can print different quality while others only print in their single 'native' quality which can be anywhere from coarse to fine.
That car body that they printed last year in about 20 hours was VERY coarse ...almost 1/4"/pass -- that's why they had to then had to cheese-grater it like a regular body shop would on a coarse custom mod or body patch and then slowly and laboriously grate, micro-plane, sand, etc into a smooth finished surface. If printing a 1/18 scale model of that same full-size vehicle but with 0.0125" resolution it would yield a nice smooth 1/18 scale model but would still take about 20 hours (if a comparably 'fast' printer). If you printed the 1/18 scale model at 1/4"/pass it would take only minutes but it would be nearly unrecognizable as a car model.
Though I'll never say never, the experts feel 3D printing is unlikely to become a volume production high-resolution platform anytime soon ...simply the physics of the process . It is, however, very useful for prototyping ...esp where speed PLUS resolution is not required.
They've also been using them to print prototype tissues and simple organs -- like skin or an ear printed on top of a 'scaffold' structure -- and then further grown/nourished in a lab with good results. Of course they're not using plastics for that but rather tissue cells in a special organic carrier.
