I have neither the skills, nor the machine, but I'd probably use some simple silicone caulk for what you're working on. :beerchug:

I'm considering a piece of wood, with many coats of poly, and then silicone around it. The wood would raise the sponge level. Still need to work on this, been busy with other things.

I've only welded steel and aluminum.

Stainless is easier than aluminum.
