Most of the time I dont post medical problem online but this time it's different. My wife asked me to post here for prayers. She has been having stomach pains and such for about 2 months. Tomorrow she is getting the upper GI tract scoped and a colonoscopy done. She is worried that there may be something bad going on. I tell her not to worry until there is something to worry about. Easier said than done for her.
Thanks guys

Thinking of you and your family Art. May it be something minor and easily treatable. So many years with you, it's probably just an ulcer.

Thank you every one for the prayers.
It turned out pretty good. Only one polyp and doctor said he removed it and sent it to lab. Didnt look like cancer to him. Her stomach problem was from acid reflux. She has scores in her stomach and esoficaous. They gave her Prylosec to stop the acid and she will feel better in a couple days. TG can correct any spelling errors

Refux can be nasty stuff, but relatively easy to control.

Good news so far, and hopefully even better when the lab report comes back!

I have lots of experience with reflux. I suggest she ask about Omeprazole. Cheaper and works better, and can buy OTC.

The only concern is the long-term effects on the body/organs...not many studies on that. Take the lowest dosage you can get away with.

Jan goes off that stuff once her GERD (gastro-esophageal reflux disease) is under control and will just use Tums or, for an instant and dramatic acid reduction, the old tried and true baking soda in some warm water ...typically instant relief of the acid and, if not too inflamed, the pain too.

The problem with messing with the 'proton pumps' (which is a catch phrase the drug companies synthesized for a process they freely admit to the FDA they do not understand) is that it has other downstream (literally and figuratively) effects. Tums is calcium so, besides neutralizing acid, also helps prevent bone density issues in women (Jan's bone density has actually improved over the past couple years) as long as you don't consume too much calcium. And the Baking Soda remedy has been used for a century o rmore ...it even predates Alka Seltzer and has no aspirin in it as Alka Seltzer does. Just passing along some stuff we've discovered.

I'd use proton pump drugs only as a last resort and, even then, only until under control ...jmho. For some people those drugs work well -- they worked well for Jan too until we started telling doc about above strategy. Imo, docs tend to throw drugs at everything b/c they don't want you to feel they're not doing whatever they can -- and proton pump drugs do 'work' (tho no one knows EXACTLY HOW they ACTUALLY work -- really) but are probably not a good long-term solution for the vast majority of people they are prescribed for. Jan still has GERD but she's managing it by preventing (diet) and reducing (Tums, bicarb) as much as possible w/o proton pump drugs. Of course it she eats 'bad' foods it can flare up -- then she just whacks it with Tums &/or bicarb or, in the rare instances that doesn't work she'll use an over-the-counter fast-acting proton-pump drug ...hasn't had to use the long-acting (slow-start) varieties much at all as a result. It's a learning process and everyone is different but there's more than one way to skin the proverbial cat.

And diet is key and the FDA and the drug companies know it! When the first proton-pump drugs hit the market some 20+ years ago they 'swore' to the FDA they would never market the drug other than as providing relief -- specifically NOT as a way to permit bad food eating patterns or eating bad foods. Of course that was just a ploy -- now virtually every commercial for that class of drug shows people abusing themselves with foods that are bad for GERD but, not to worry, drug-X to the rescue -doh!

Agree...I admit I'm a bit lazy about a good diet.

I take the PP drugs "regularly", but not every day. I make sure to take them if I know I'll be eating a spicy/large meal. Tums simply don't work for me, I've tried. Baking soda doesn't work either. There is one liquid that does work, it coats the lining and sticks...Gaviscon....but it's very expensive. I keep a bottle on hand but only use 1-2x/year in emergencies.

68fastback
10-21-2017, 08:57 PM
Yeah, forgot about Gaviscon ...Jan tried it at one point but hasn't used it in a long time ...dunno why (possibly the cost).
There's also Pepto Bismol but has other effects and can't take that regularly b/c of the bismuth.

I'm so lucky ...I rarely get even mild heartburn and when I do one single Tums does it ...maybe that's a couple times a year. Not that I eat great ...I'm just lucky.

I never thought about baking soda. I use it on corded battery cables.
She still has something going on so it's going to be another trip to the doctor this week.
Supposed to leave for Iowa this weekend not not sure.

Hope they figure it out, Art. The proton-pump drugs can take a while to bring relief if there's been some damage that has to heal.

If it's any consolation Jan has been chasing the same sort of thing for 30+ years. Some people are just more prone to such.

Gastro doc explained it to us like this (to wit): 'our digestive system is quite primitive -- a tract where various enzymes from saliva to bile help accelerate breaking things down so nutrition can be extracted ...sometimes the tissues themselves are affected by the process when their defenses, mucus, are breached. GI tract has only two warning signals -- pain and nausea. Pain is inflammation of some kind and nausea is a warning that, for any one of several reasons, what's in there you're body wants out -- one way or the other.'

Update. My wife is still having pain and so she went to the doctor yesterday. They told her that one of her medications may be causing this problem.
My wife is taking Metphorn (sp) because her blood sugar is a little high. 5.7 and this is causing some of these problems she is having. I feel bad for her because she never complains about stuff but this is starting to get to her.
Hope by changing this medication for something else that she will get better.

Art, I mentioned to Jan (she used to be on Metformin before she got her T2 diabetes under control and, tho she didn't have stomach pain from it, she immediately mentioned that's a known symptom. So, hopefully, the med change will help!
