Grandpa saw action in Germany, Holland, and Italy...
One time in Germany he was sent with two other guys to bomb a house that was a focal point of German resistance... They thought they got in close enough without detection, and Grandpa, who was carrying "a large bomb launcher" got two away and destroyed the target!!
They were scrambling back to their own lines, when German machine gunners who got in behind them, opened fire... All three hit the ground, but both other guys were killed... The Germans kept shooting so Grandpa ended up crawling all the way back to his line, wearing out the knees in his pants...
Story doesn't end there though,
in his hurry crawling back, he didn't realize he entered a mine field... Luckily, the mine he set of was designed to go up four feet and then blast out... Most of the shrapnel went over him but some landed in his legs and back... I saw the scars, and his bullet graze scar too...
He taught me how to drive, how to hunt, mechanical skills, and on and on!!

Stecey, that is an awesome and powerful story -- thanks for sharing it!! Your grandpa was a true patriot.
We are all richer because of their service. God bless. RIP.
Both of my grandfathers died very young so I never knew them. You were blessed to know your grandpa!

These people (your Grandpa) are why we are here! :wtg:

Some great stories and pics, thanks for sharing. I never served. My dad served in the reserves for several years. My uncle served, and at his funeral they held a military salute...it was really nice.
I am so grateful for all our service members past and present. I also think it's a travesty how some have been treated by having substandard medical care for some periods in the past. Thank you to all...especially if there are any of us here that I don't know of or have not thanked already.
When I was a home inspector, I was authorized to give discounts of up to 10% for military people, which I did on several occasions. In my handyman business, I will give small discounts but have not yet worked for a military person.
