He would have been 100 today.

What a great person. The Undersea World of Jacuqes Cousteau and Cousteau Odyssey were main stays at our house. We watched them because we wanted. These were the first "reality TV" shows similar to Deadliest Catch. At one point my dream job was to be a photographer on the Calypso.

Episodes of the Cousteau Odyssey are on Turner Classic Movies today. I'm taking the day off and with the weather not looking too good will be watching a few.

I have met and had a 1 hour conversation with a small group of people with Jean-Michel Cousteau, Jacque's surviving son. He was the guest speaker for several sessions at a awards meeting in Hawaii. He described the south Pacific, with the Hawaiian Islands (of which there are many more than the inhabited ones) as the "toilet bowl" of the planet. Garbage from places like Malaysia enter the "swirl" and are washed up on the islands. He showed pictures of tons and tons of computer monitors and plastic rings on the beach.

Even scarier were heaps of tons and tons of fishing nets with whales and other large animals fouled in them. They are lost and simply discarded by the fishing boats, primarily of Japan. it is now required that nets be tagged and boats are required to retrieve them or face hefty fines.

Thanks, Jacques (and Jean-Michel), for watching out for our planet.

He would be appalled at what is happening in the Gulf!
