We were visiting family in Illinois about two weeks ago. Hotel was having a bluegrass festival. Some lady was playing one of these things below...called it a Doghouse Bass. I asked her how she transported it....she said "It fits in my Beetle". :haha:

Bass fiddle = Bull fiddle = Stand-up bass = Double bass = Doghouse bass...

According to Levon Helm it got it's name back when a whole band travelled in one large American auto. The drums were stowed in the trunk, the guitars in with the players and the bass strapped to the roof. If you were travelling back behind a band car the bass on the roof took on the profile a bit like a doghouse (with the string bridge as the 'peak'). Of course back then (way before The Band) they were travelling in their front-man and manager Ronnie Hawkins' white Cadillac and the later Band song White Cadillac is an ode to Ronnie who first pulled the band together under the name Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks (Ronnie came back to Woodstock for a reunion celebration and I was lucky enough to score front-center seats at the Woodstock Theater that night). They later became Bob Dillan's 'no-name' band (back when he went 'electric' and before his near-fatal cycle accident up here and he re-acceptance playing electric). The public didn't like that Dylan's band had no name so they were just called 'the band' -- the name stuck and was officially 'labeled' when Albert Grossman became their manager for their 10 albums in 10 years first label contract which required a name! And they went on to be one of the most influential bands in history.

Interesting that no one on the Talk Bass forum seems to know where the name came from -- though apparently they want to.

lol ...yeah bass is a world unto it self.

Some of the bass 'rigs' (effects, compression, amplification, etc) are fairly elaborate ...not like back in the day when it was a bass guitar and an amp ...period.
