One of my favorite candies besides Palmer's Twin Bing

I remember them as a kid. Start out 'chalky' but then get good -- and addictive ;-)

Remember those little wax 'soda bottles' you'd bite the top off and they were filled with concentrated flavors ;-)

I used to really like Bonomo's Turkish Taffy (still available from specialty candy suppliers -- usually in summer months only). "SMACK IT AND CRACK IT" :giggle:

Sold out of bankruptcy.

It looks like the buyers were interested in the wafers and valentine hearts. I think the chocolates must have been a local/regional thing since I don't ever remember having them, even when we lived there.

I'd rather they keep making Mary Janes vs the Necco wafers -- Mary Janes rock!!

Good to see. I had read that they were provided the recipe but not the method for making them so they had to work on getting that correct. They had the same issue with the Clark Bar. Glad to see they are trying to keep the old style candies going.

Way cool!

They're manufactured by Spangler Candy ...they list a whole bunch of stores they're supposedly available at. I'll have to check CVS next time we're up there. ;-)

Those are cool! I remember them as a kid ..maybe a different brand tho, don't recall.

---

Remember these banana -flavored 'circus peanuts (https://www.spanglercandy.com/circus-peanuts-5oz)'? They were sort of chewy but in a nice way ...sort of soft and not too dense.

From the Necco web site

History of Necco Wafers
In 1847, a young English immigrant and progressive thinker, Oliver Chase, invented the first American candy machine, a lozenge cutter. After a period of initial success selling his exciting new candy, he joined forces with brother, Silas Edwin and founded Chase and Company.
In 1901, Chase and Company merged with both Forbes, Hayward & Company and Wright & Moody to officially form the New England Confectionary Company, or NECCO. Over the years, NECCO prospered and produced many well-known products, but its success was propelled by its most beloved candy: Necco Wafers.
From the time of their creation, Necco Wafers have been enjoyed all over the world, quite literally. They were carried by soldiers during the Civil War. In 1913, explorer Donald MacMillan took Necco Wafers on his Arctic explorations, sharing them with Eskimo children.
Later in the 1930s, two and a half tons of Necco Wafers were taken on an expedition to the South Pole, which amounted to about a pound a week for each person during their two-year stay.
During World War II, the U.S. Government requisitioned a major portion of the production of Necco Wafers. The candy was perfect for shipping to troops overseas since it doesn’t melt and is very portable.
Spangler purchased the Necco Wafer brand in 2018 and after a two year absence, The Original Candy Wafer was returned to fans in the summer of 2020.
Necco Wafers have stood the test of time. New fans will discover their sweetness while longtime loyal fans relish the feelings of nostalgia that come with unwrapping and savoring each Wafer.

2.5 TONS to the south pole!!! Wow, that's a LOT of sugar.

Necco part of the war effort too! Although I think chocolate was probably more popular, probably second behind nylons :) (at least I hear of chocolate and nylons in the movies :) )

Odd thing is candies like this used to be at restaurant cashier stands in a bowl with a little spoon. Just naked candy in a bowl. They they started the mints in wrappers, now all of that stuff is gone. F*, you can't even get a toothpick any more. (Literally, at least here in Vegas, no toothpicks allowed by law.)

Our local diner still has mints by the cash register -- individually wrapped, of course, lest we die :haha:

I remember those! They were actually sold in NY subway mechanical vending machines when I was a teen.
