My wife got a new car which can is not worth mentioning (Those who attended the car show Orf arranged at the Ford dealer in Pittsburgh would understand). So how long should I wait before having it waxed?

With clear coat there is no reason to let the paint "age" so any time you want, but I've always waited "until it needs it", ie, when rain doesn't bead to my liking (not when it stops, unless that's my pickup truck which I haven't waxed in over 5 years. A good clay barring and wax is coming up after I get the GT back together.

Probably get 20 answers from 20 people, but I usually wait about 30 days. I don’t think it would hurt to do it sooner.

I don’t think it’s worth waxing a Nissan though. :ohsnap:

I agree no need to wait, but might be wasted time doing it immediately unless it's been sitting on a lot in the weather for awhile.

If you need a microfiber towel, talk to ati.

 Hey I haven't spoken with Alan in a while, this would be a good subject to discuss with him :tease:

The reason I recommend waiting until it is needed is because a wax job is destructive in that the old wax (it's really a polish) is removed (and there's no use in throwing away good stuff). Use a dishwashing detergent (e.g., Dawn) to wash the car first. That removes the old wax. Clay bar it using the clay and almost any spray detailer. Clay bar kits will include the native detailer (e.g., Mothers) but after that is gone and if the clay bar is good any detailer will work. Then follow with the wax. I like the Turtle Wax Ice family. I use both paste and liquid. First apply two coats of the paste. Then clean up using the spray detailer to finish everything off. For maintenance use the spray detailer and after about every third application follow up with the liquid polish. This will last about a year, after which strip, clay bar, repeat.

I like the Turtle Wax products because both the paste and liquid wax/polish can be applied to the plastic parts without leaving a haze. In fact, on the plastic front fascia/bumper/etc I apply two coats and it really helps when trying to clean bug goo off.

What about the ceramic coating they have now?

I still think you want the sun to fully harden off the paint ...even with clearcoat, which is paint w/o pigment. When cars leave the factory the paint is still 'soft' -- possibly b/c they don't have the time or want to incur the expense to thoroughly harden ('bake') it ...jmho.

That said, I like Tony's approach. ;-)

I stripped the crap off that dealerships put on when detail cars on the lot. Dawn and clay bar. The crap is on the glass too. Wax of your choice afterwards.

I still like Subaru over the Chinese Honda, Nissan, Toyota, Hyundai and Mitsubishi’s.

What about paint protection film? You could get the whole car done...

You mean the "Laura Palmer treatment" ("Dead, wrapped in plastic")? That stuff is way expensive, although it will and does protect from road chips. I can see a few places in my GT where the film took the hit but it didn't get through to the paint. Typical application is only for front facing surfaces and rocker panels. I've seen whole car advertising wraps and some have used it as a way of changing vehicle color without a paint job.

Not yet, Teresa has been traveling. It should happen next week. There won't be any pictures because it's a Subaru.
